Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a
printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its
ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of
ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month)
times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge).
Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular
cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per
month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The
monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21

Can a multifunction machine really do everything you need? Unless you're
looking for top-quality printing, the Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet T65
Multifunction Unit is more than sufficient to meet most of your demands.
The T65 combines a fax, copier, scanner, and printer--all designed to
work together to save space, time, and money. With the HP OfficeJet T65,
you can generate crisp scans, print sharp text, and make copies with
enlargements and reductions, all at the touch of a button.
The T65 was easy to set up and use. Even without connecting it to our
computer, we were able to make copies and send multiple faxes. Its
integrated operation was as intuitive as that of any dedicated copier or
fax machine. The clear LCD screen helped us follow our own work as we
programmed in dozens of our important fax and phone numbers. We consider
the easy-to-read and clearly marked buttons a plus for a unit with such
complex capabilities.
Because items scan through the printer/fax body, anything taped, glued,
or otherwise pieced together tended to tear or jam. We recommend
scanning only single sequential sheets. For example, a collection of
press clippings pasted to a single sheet would be inappropriate for
scanning through this unit. The scanner uses 300 x 600 dpi resolution,
with OCR software provided to speed editing.
We appreciated the convenience of having an in-house copier capable of
reducing, enlarging, and collating. The T65 copied at a fast 6 copies
per minute in black and 2 cpm in color in multiples of up to 99.
The fax memory holds 75 pages. You can program numbers dialed most often
into the 10 one-touch fax buttons or into 100 speed-dial numbers. You
can also work on other projects while the fax function works in
background, sending unattended faxes with the 20-page automatic document

Space! Space! There's never enough space in an office! Where are you
going to put all of this computer equipment? Instead of pushing stuff
around, pulling your hair out, and getting a crick in your back from
plugging in and unplugging your peripherals, take a close look at
Hewlett-Packard's new OfficeJet T65--a multifunction office unit that
can save valuable desktop space.
What makes this device really remarkable is the quality of its prints,
scans, copies, and faxes--all of which can be in color or monochrome,
and all for a very respectable $599. The whisper-quiet unit handles all
of its tasks with speed and grace and, if you like, can be controlled
through your PC with HP's bundled software.
Scan, Print, Fax, Copy, Repeat
When used as a printer, the OfficeJet T65 will print up to 11 pages per
minute of monochrome text in Econofast (draft) mode, according to HP.
Testing with a 20-page text document, I achieved 8.1 ppm--not too far
off. In Normal mode, the printer produced excellent copy at 4.1 pages
per minute--close to the rated 5 ppm. When printing text and color
graphics, the speed drops to 2.2 ppm--a bit off from the 3.5 ppm output
HP says the T65 can produce.
Real-world speed discrepancies aside, the T65 produced sharp and crisp
text, and vibrant color, even when printing on plain paper using the
Normal quality setting. One word of warning: The black ink tends to go
on thick, so don't grab a printout from the output tray right away, or
you may smear the ink.
For photo printing, the T65 gives you 600 dots per inch resolution
through HP's Photo REt II color layer technology--fancy talk for
accurate color and high resolution. Testing on glossy paper, there was
no mistaking the good quality. A 7-by-8.75-inch image took a little over
five minutes to print, but the wait was worth it. A high-quality image
of fruit showed very red raspberries, bright yellow lemons, and
accurately orange oranges.
The fax capabilities of the T65 are what you'd expect: The unit offers
standard, fine, high (300 dpi), and photo-resolution modes, along with
10 one-touch keys, a 100-number speed-dial memory, and a 75-page
document memory (for monochrome faxes only). Another nice feature for
use when you're away from the office is the capability of forwarding
faxes to another fax machine.
The scanner component offers up to 300-by-600-dpi resolution (1200 dpi
enhanced), 24-bit color, and 8-bit gray-scale output. A copy sleeve (a
plastic envelope for your original) can be used for small or delicate
originals, such as photos. Also included is Readiris 5.0 OCR software,
which I found to be remarkably accurate with the text documents I used
for testing. You can also scan documents directly into your e-mail
application (assuming it's MAPI compliant) for attachment to messages.
As a copier, the T65 can make up to 99 copies from an original, and it
will collate your copies, as well. Buttons on the front panel of the
unit let you control copy quality (with Fast, Normal, and Best modes)
and the reduction/enlargement feature (with presets between 25 and 400
percent). Separate buttons for color and monochrome copies make
selection easy.
