printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its
ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of
ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month)
times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge).
Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular
cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per
month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The
monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21
200 pages
Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the
original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of
remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

Hewlett-Packard's 940C printer combines high-quality printing with a
space-saving design that's ideally suited for small work areas.
Providing both outstanding detail and economic use of consumables, this
thermal inkjet easily earns its keep in the home office. Color prints
are churned out at up to 10 pages per minute, with a fully saturated
2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution. Monochrome print jobs are processed at up
to 12 pages per minute and receive a letter-perfect 600 dpi resolution.
With simple one-touch operation and clear onscreen windows to navigate
you through the printing process, everyone in the family can use this
solidly built machine. Hewlett-Packard includes a 90-day warranty on
parts and labor.
This printer model is not being manufactured by HP any more
PC WORLD.com Editors' review: WHAT'S HOT: The Deskjet 940c printed narrow lines well,
and gray-scale images looked wonderful in our tests, even on ordinary
paper. Graphics and glossy photographs retained fine detail and texture,
but graphics had too much cyan and glossies were somewhat dark. A superb
online manual includes informative animations. The driver's handy
graphics mode makes graphics legible for copying or faxing. WHAT'S NOT: HP provides a miserly 90-day limited
warranty with only 30 days of telephone support and no toll-free number.
We rated the printer's speed as average, at 4.7 ppm for text and 0.7 ppm
for graphics in tests. Output text looked grayish, and large letters
showed minor hatching around the edges. WHAT ELSE: An $80 duplexer lets you print on both sides
of a page. HP's black ink costs a steepish 6 cents per page; color
prints are a reasonable 13.8 cents each. UPSHOT: The $149 price is right, and performance and
print quality are fine, but a chintzy warranty gives us pause.
