Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a
printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its
ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of
ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month)
times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge).
Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular
cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per
month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The
monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21
200 pages
Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the
original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of
remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

If your chief task is printing photos but you need a printer at a
value price, the Epson Stylus Photo 700 may be an ideal choice.
This inkjet features both hardware and software that are geared
toward producing photographs, and, on Epson photo paper, you'll
get the benefit of 1,440 x 720 dpi resolution.
The Photo 700 uses six colors of ink to provide accurate color
balance. The unit accepts a five-color (cyan, magenta, yellow,
light-cyan,light-magenta) ink cartridge and a separate black
cartridge. With this version of Epson's proprietary Micro Piezo
inkjet technology, the printhead remains in the unit when you
change a cartridge.
A CD-ROM provides both Windows and Macintosh versions of helpful
applications, collectively called Epson Digital Photo Lab. Titles
include Adobe Photo Deluxe for image editing, Epson Photo Sheet
for printing sheets of photos in various sizes, Extensis Portfolio
for organizing photos, PictureWorks Spin Panorama for producing
panoramic pictures, and the DiaMAR Learning to See Creatively LE

PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
Even without a digital camera, the $279 Stylus Photo 700 offers
great photo features. Its six-color ink technology produces
subtle, realistic color graphics and photos--the best of this
group on high-quality ink jet paper. Color printing on ordinary
paper is about the same as with the other printers here--less
impressive but still good. It also prints crisp black text on good
paper, though on plain paper the HP DeskJet 722C does better.
Gray-scale graphics are gorgeous, even on regular paper.
The Stylus Photo 700's Achilles' heel is performance: At only 1.3
ppm on text, it's snail-like compared to the other ink jets on the
chart. But the 700 can help small businesses in other ways. Its
ease of use will minimize the need for training multiple users. A
strong photo-oriented software package is bundled with the
printer, including Adobe PhotoDeluxe, a photo-archiving database,
and a program for creating panoramic images. And Epson sells a
vast assortment of media--more than HP--specifically for the 700,
including 4-by-6-inch snapshot sheets ($6.99 for a package of 20)
and 8.5-by-24-inch panorama sheets ($16.57 for 10).
