Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a
printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its
ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of
ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month)
times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge).
Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular
cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per
month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The
monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21
200 pages
Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the
original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of
remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

ProductDescription for Epson 740
(From the Manufacturer, Epson)
The Epson Stylus Color 740 produces near laser-quality text and
1,440-dpi printed color images. Epson's PerfectPicture Imaging
System, a blend of features that includes tiny ink jets, smooth
AccuPhoto Halftoning, and quick-drying inks helps produce rich
color.
Setting up the Epson 740 was straightforward for an ink-jet
printer. We followed the short setup instructions and connected
the printer cable (not included) to our PC. When Windows detected
the new printer, we followed the Windows New Hardware wizard and
specified that our new printer driver was in the CD-ROM drive. The
driver automatically installed itself and additional software as
well. (When setting up, be careful not to remove the blue section
of the protective tape that covers the ink cartridges.)
Ink-jet technology is a low-cost way to get sharp text and
beautiful colors, and the Epson 740 implements the technology in
an easy-to-use package.

PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
The $279 Epson Stylus Color 740 features the smallest droplet size
in the industry, the company said. Generally speaking, the smaller
the droplet size, the crisper and better-defined images will be.
Small droplet size can also contribute to richer colors.
The Stylus Color 740 is aimed at the small-business user. It
features 1440 x 720 dpi resolution and supports Universal Serial
Bus (USB) connectivity for both Windows 98 and Macintosh,
including the new iMac. The model runs at approximately 6 pages
per minute (ppm) monochrome and 4.5 ppm for color text and
graphics, according to Epson. Bundled software includes Adobe
PhotoDeluxe 2.0 and Broderbund's The Print Shop PressWriter.
