printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its
ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of
ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month)
times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge).
Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular
cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per
month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The
monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21

Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the
original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of
remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

Printing 12 pages per minute at an astonishing 2,400 x 1,200 resolution,
the Canon S500 is an economical and powerful printing solution for your
home or office. The S500 can produce exceptional photo-quality prints
that, when printed on Canon Professional photo paper PR-101, can
maintain their color for up to 25 years without fading. Colors are
brilliant and images are sharp, thanks to Canon's Microfine Droplet
technology.
Economically minded users will appreciate that the S500's ink cartridges
are individually replaceable, so when you run out of one color you can
just replace the cartridge for that color, instead replacing an entire
three-color cartridge. The printer features both USB and parallel ports
and drivers for PC and MAC (Windows 95/98/ME/2000/NT 4.0 and Apple
Macintosh OS 8.1 or higher).

PC WORLD.com Editors' review: WHAT'S HOT: Canon's new S500 produces higher-quality
graphics than many other ink jets in the $150 range. Though colors
initially appear a bit brown, a little tweaking in a photo editor
enables the S500 to deliver sharp detail with natural shading and
transitions. The S500 also features ultra-affordable ink prices: A page
of text uses only 2 cents' worth, and a page of color graphics only 10.7
cents. Unlike typical ink cartridges that enclose all color inks in one
ink cartridge, Canon's S500 puts each ink color into a separate tank, so
when you deplete one color you can replace just its tank instead of the
whole ink cartridge.
WHAT'S NOT: The S500's print speed is acceptable but
unimpressive, especially for home-office use. A number of comparably
priced ink jets--such as Lexmark's Z53--print text and graphics faster
than the S500's 3.8 ppm and 0.2 ppm.
WHAT ELSE: We're not crazy about the S500's purple
plastic exterior and sparkly silver-speckled lid. Canon hasn't forgotten
older PCs, though: The S500 sports a parallel port right next to the USB
port.
