Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a
printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its
ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of
ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month)
times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge).
Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular
cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per
month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The
monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21
200 pages
Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the
original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of
remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

ProductDescription for Canon C530
(From the Manufacturer, Canon)
The Canon MultiPass C530 combines the functions of a color printer, fax
machine, convenience color copier, and PC scanner at an almost
irresistible price. The C530 is best suited to home use because of its
modest performance ratings. Printing is rated at up to 2 pages per
minute (ppm), and the copier function can make black-and-white copies at
up to 3.1 copies per minute (cpm). Color copies range from three to nine
minutes per page, depending on resolution settings.
Setup is almost as easy as plugging in a traditional ink-jet printer. We
connected the C530 to our test PC with a bidirectional parallel cable,
inserted the ink cartridges, and plugged in our phone line. The unit
offers three RJ-11 phone jacks for line, telephone, and an answering
machine. We loaded the ink cartridges by placing the color and black ink
tanks into the print head, dropping the head in place, locking it in
place with the blue lever, and pressing the cartridge key, which is
exposed only while the cover is open.
This Canon model comes with a number of individual software elements.
There are separate printer and fax drivers for outputting jobs from the
PC. In addition, the C530 includes Status Monitor, which displays job
status and error conditions; Send Fax Manager, which lets you monitor
scheduled fax jobs; MultiPass Toolbar, which provides a customized
interface to common tasks; and Desktop Manager, a flexible interface
that lets you manage your scanned documents and pass them to
applications through drag and drop.
Two key strengths of this unit are its stand-alone fax and copy
capabilities and its application software bundle. The C530 includes a
complete fax control panel with 12 one-touch dial buttons and a number
of software programs for a well-rounded small- or home-office solution.
The MultiPass C530 isn't really cut out for a high-volume environment,
but it is a flexible solution for a home office.
This printer model is not being manufactured by Canon any more
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
Canon has upped the ante on multifunction devices with its new MultiPass
C530.
This multifunction device -- a combination of printer, scanner, fax
machine, and copier -- comes full of capabilities for a low price of
$350. And, when it ships in October, a $50 mail-in rebate will bring the
street price down to $300.
The new device's glossiest feature is color copying, which works even
when the unit is not connected to a PC or its PC is off. And from the
color scanner the unit includes for copying in color, it's a short jump
to color faxing -- an emerging standard not yet widely implemented
because most office fax machines use a monochrome scanner and laser
print engine.
The MP C530 comes with ChromaFax, the software that enables color
faxing; TextBridge Professional, the full-featured version of the
popular optical character-recognition program; and Adobe PhotoDeluxe
Business Edition, the high-end version of Adobe's photo-editing and
document-production package.
Canon specifies the print speed at 5 pages per minute for text and 2
pages for graphics; PC World has not tested the unit's real-world
performance, but it is likely to be fairly close to the spec on text and
significantly slower on graphics.
More Than Just Good Looks The MP C530 offers much of the fax capability of a
stand-alone fax machine, which is more than many multifunction devices
provide. For example, it can password-protect incoming faxes, and hold
them in memory until the intended recipient arrives to enter the code.
The MP C530 can also poll, or call up another fax machine and request
specific documents.
You can set the device to forward faxes, and to delay sending for
nighttime phone rates. You can also create cover pages on a PC and
upload them to the MP C530's memory, then assign them to outgoing faxes
from the device's control panel, which includes a 30-page document
feeder.
One useful feature it lacks, though, is remote-control support. For
example, forwarding of your faxes from an office to your hotel requires
physical access to the machine. Its memory is also limited to about 40
pages, and unfortunately the paper tray holds only 100 sheets.
