Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a
printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its
ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of
ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month)
times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge).
Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular
cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per
month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The
monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21
200 pages
Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the
original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of
remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

ProductDescription for HP 7410 (From
the Manufacturer, Canon)
The Canon BJC-6000 is designed for both busy workplaces and home
offices. It provides fast, affordable, professional-quality,
high-resolution black and color printing. An intelligent ink system with
individual tanks eliminates waste and saves money, and optional Canon
Photo Inks and specialty paper create amazing near-photo-quality output.
To set up the Canon BJC-6000, we followed the instructions on the Quick
Start guide. Because the BJC-6000 comes with several large tanks (one
each for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow), and because the tanks and
cartridges are separate, setup took longer than usual. The Canon
Creative Pro CD-ROM comes with several complementary applications, so
software installation took a little longer as well.
In our test of the BJC-6000, we printed several color and
black-and-white samples in each of the printer's four modes--draft,
good, better, and best. Our samples included graphics, large and small
letters, and a variety of fonts and color shades. Black text was razor
sharp and approached the quality of a modest laser printer. There was
only a tiny bit of ink bleeding, even on normal uncoated paper, and a
multi-colored tight-register sample looked especially impressive.
We also scanned and printed a 32-bit color photograph. Even without the
optional Canon Photo Inks and specialty paper, the hard copy was warm
and detailed, capturing the texture of the original with surprising
accuracy. We also appreciated the speed--up to five pages per minute
(ppm) in color.
The Canon BJC-6000 is an impressive bubble-jet printer with a great
software bundle; it would make an excellent addition to any small
office.
Pros:
Sharp, near-laser-quality black printing
1440 x 720 color printing
Up to 8 ppm
Great software bundle
Cons:
Lots of ink cartridges to keep track of
Setup takes a little longer
No printer cable
This printer model is not being
manufactured by Canon any more
PCWORLD.com Editors' review: WHAT'S HOT: For a competitive $199, Canon's BJC-6000
provides the fastest performance of any ink jet in its price range. In
fact, at 4.4 ppm on text, it's speedier than all but two other models
here--the $399 Epson Stylus Color 900 and the $299 HP DeskJet 895Cse.
Similarly, the BJC-6000's 1.1-ppm graphics speed puts it ahead of all
but the Epson. Text quality is impressive, with a strong, solid black
and clear letterforms, even on italic, bold, and small type. Similarly,
the BJC-6000 did an impressive job on our color photographic output
test. Printing on high-quality paper with the photo cartridges in place
yielded lifelike, photo-realistic images and terrific colors. WHAT'S NOT: Narrow parallel lines overlap, color
graphics wash out and lack detail, and gray-scale images display a
coarse dot texture. Even printing in high-resolution mode on ink jet
paper doesn't help much. The software driver is packed with features,
but poor design makes navigating them a challenge. WHAT ELSE: The BJC-6000's design is unusually sturdy
for an ink jet, with tough yet flexible paper trays. Unlike any other
model in this review, the Canon has separately replaceable ink tanks, so
you don't have to discard all the color ink when one tank runs out (a
great design that other printers should emulate). This efficiency
contributes to the BJC-6000's low total cost of ownership--it's far and
away the most affordable in this roundup. An ethernet adapter is
available for about $130. BEST USE: Small-office users who need clean, quick text
output and have limited graphics demands will like this printer.
