Best Value for Price - Wireless Networking Compatible, April 22, 2006
By S. Waudby "swaudby" (Arlington, VA United States)

First off I have my own technology consulting company. I was recently challenged by a client to set up wirelss printing and they wanted to have a laserjet and spend under $150 for the printer. I first purchased an HP Laserjet 1020 ($129.99 Amazon and Staples) and it was not compatible with Netgear, Linksys, or US Robotics wireless print servers, after several days of updating, reloading and messing with software and settings it just would not work. I then researched HP Website and found the HP Laserjet 1022 ($201.99 Amazon), which I was reassured would work with a wireless print server. When I tried to install it on my computer it would not install due to the fact that I still had a 1020 on my network. I uninstalled the 1020 (which took about 90 minutes) and reattempted to install the 1022, after rebooting several times the printer installed and I was able to print. I then attempted to print from it wirelessly using 3 different wireless print servers. It would not work, even after updating the software from HP's support website. I uninstalled it and sent it back.

After a week of research I found the Samsung ML-2010 ($79.99 Best Buy), which had very favorable reviews, some of the ones on Amazon that are low rated, were not issues that I was concerned about for my client. It installed with no glitches. I was able to print in about 10 minutes. I then set it up using my Netgear print server and I was up and printing wirelessly in about 20 minutes. I printed over 1,000 pages in the first couple of days with no problems at all.

The text print quality is as good as the HP Laserjet 1020 ($129.99 Amazon) and the 1022 ($201.99 Amazon). The image print quality is almost a good. It took me about 20 pictures of comparison and the Samsung is ever so slightly lighter. Definately not a negitive point since my client is printing 85% text and the cost savings of $50.00 almost pays for a back up toner cartridge. The Samsung is a bit louder than the HP, but if you don't have/need to put in on the desk right next to your computer then it shouldn't be a problem. My client is putting hers in another room in her house so it is not going to be an issue. I did not have any issues with paper jams or paper curling as stated by other reviewers.

I also compared this to the Brother HL-2040 ($115.98 Amazon) on Amazon. The HL-2040 is much louder and the print quality for images is much much lighter. There was some pixilation in some of the pictures as well. Definately would recommend against this printer for that reason and the value isn't as good.

I would definately recommend the Samsung ML-2010, in fact, I have purchased one for myself.

Fits the bill for a limited budget, October 19, 2005
By N. S. Burk (NH, USA)

My wife prints her students' papers at home so it was time to dedicate a laser printer to the task. For our limited budget, this fits the bill quite nicely. Pros/Cons: It doesn't support USB 2.0 and the long warm up time is kind of frustrating ("Did I click print??? Oh yeah, there it goes.") Once it gets going, the pages come out quickly. It is louder than most other laser printers, but not louder than some ink jets. And yes, the room lights flicker when it fires up. No joke. Not worth the price without a rebate, and the price seems to be on the rise. Samsung has replaced this with a later model, and I can only hope that they'll support this one for a full lifecycle (although the cost of toner replacement rivals the purcahse price of the printer!). You can also get a Dell laser printer for around $99.
