With a PictBridge connector for direct printing from cameras and support for six color inks to enhance image quality, the HP Deskjet 5440 Photo Printer was designed to print high quality photos.
At a relatively compact 6.7 by 18.1 by 8.7 inches (HWD), the 5440 should be easy to find a place for, and setup is mostly typical for printers that connect via USB: You simply snap in the included black and tricolor ink cartridges (or substitute a photo cartridge for the black one if you're doing six-color printing), load paper, connect the USB cable and power cord, and run the automated setup.
There is one additional—and somewhat annoying—step, though: The alignment routine, in which you choose the best settings in each of eight different sample sets, is manual. And you must run it every time you change a cartridge—even when switching between black and photo. Worse, choosing best-aligned samples is much harder than with similar routines we've seen. Making the process manual rather than automatic helps keep costs down, but introduces an extra chore that will likely discourage you from switching between four- and six-color printing very often.
The 5440's quality scores—the high end of good for text and graphics and very good for photos—are typical for both ink jets as a whole and those in the 5440's price range. You're unlikely to ever require text output the printer can't handle. Most of our test fonts were easily readable at 4 points. The only two exceptions were two highly stylized fonts with thick strokes, which needed 12 points.
We output photos using both four and six colors. For color images, using six colors is well worth the effort—you'll see a noteworthy increase in the subtle shading that yields more realistic skin tones and gives a better sense of three-dimensionality. The only problems worth mentioning—and the main issue keeping the 5440 from a higher photo rating—were with the monochrome test photo.
When we printed the monochrome photo using six ink colors, we saw obvious posterization and a slight reddish-purplish tint. In the version printed with four colors, we saw no posterization, but detected hints of red and green at light-gray levels. If you won't be printing monochrome photos, this obviously won't be an issue. Most of our color test photos were true photo quality, although reds tended to be a little more saturated than in real life.
Photo performance is far less competitive, averaging 3:44 for each 4-by-6 and 9:07 for each 8-by-10. The 5940 was about a minute faster for each 4-by-6 and about two and a half minutes faster for each 8-by-10. The less expensive Canon Pixma iP1600 was even faster, averaging 1:58 and 4:01, respectively. Ultimately, the HP Deskjet 5440 is a perfectly reasonable choice, but its stiffest competition is HP's own 5940, which is faster, offers essentially the same output quality, and costs only $20 more.

The HP Color LaserJet 3600n printer printed color graphics faster than any other laser printer model. The 3600n has a vertical one-pass engine, which keeps its footprint small. The front of the machine folds down to expose the toner cartridges.
HP doesn't offer a duplexer for the Color LaserJet 3600n; to get that feature you could buy the 3600dn instead.
While text pages in our tests printed at an about-average 13.0 ppm, color graphics arrived at a remarkably speedy 5.6 ppm.
HP Color LaserJet 3600n's crisp text would have been more readable if it had printed slightly heavier. Large fonts appeared blotchy. Despite accurate hues, our color graphics came out too dark, with unnatural-looking shadow areas. The same images also looked too dark when printed on glossy photo paper, and objects had fuzzy, colored fringes.
The estimated cost per color page is low--11.5 cents. Better yet, HP ships the printer with full-size cartridges that are rated to print 6000 black pages and 4000 color pages--a $501 value.
Upshot: A small footprint, reasonably priced options, and competitive costs per page make this model worth a look, though print quality isn't top-notch.

The ink jet-based HP Photosmart 375 Compact Photo Printer ($199.99 direct) offers nearly any feature you could want in a dedicated photo printer: easy portability, at 4.5 by 8.7 by 4.6 inches (HWD) and 2.6 pounds; the ability to print from PictBridge cameras or memory cards; a 2.5-inch LCD to preview photos; a kiosk-style menu to let you crop, edit, and print multiple photos per page; and more. There's even an 8-ounce rechargeable battery pack ($80 street, or included as part of a $250 bundle with the printer), so you can print without a power outlet. Unfortunately, image quality isn't quite a match for the competition.
Print times are in the right ballpark for this class of printer, at 1 minute 29 seconds to 1:45 for printing from a computer and 1:50 to 2:10 for printing from a Canon PowerShot S60 camera. But the output quality, which rates as very good, is one step below what most printers in this category typically offer, ratings of excellent or close to it. Most people generally like punched-up colors, but the Photosmart 375's were a little too punchy for two of our test photos, taking them beyond the bounds of acceptable color. We also saw aliasing, so bicycle spokes, for example, looked like ragged, hand-drawn lines rather than straight lengths of solid metal.
This is also the only 4-by-6 printer we've seen lately that's not waterproof and smudge-proof, a description that applies to all thermal-dye output and even to the ink jet-based Epson PictureMate's output. Even after several days of drying time, a drop of water or sweaty hands will stain or smudge a photo printed by the 375.
HP claims that each 4-by-6 print will cost 29 cents, based on packages it plans to sell with bundled ink and paper. You can also buy ink and paper separately, as with standard ink jets.
Regardless of the cost per print, however, we can give the 375 only a qualified recommendation. It has a terrific feature set, but the image quality is a hair off target.
