    At $500, the HP OfficeJet d135 costs more than three times as much as its least expensive competitor. You get premium performance and features in the d135, with its superb speed and quality. Cost-conscious consumers may find less expensive competitors to be good enough, however.

    The d135 has a flatbed scanner with a document feeder, and a full-function front panel that makes walk-up faxing a snap. Setup is easy using the USB port, although parallel would have been nice too. The printer has black and tricolor ink cartridges, but it also has a separate ink jet printhead module for each color. The d135's cost per page is 5 cents—a good number, though about average for our MFP roundup. And the d135 had the highest total cost of ownership for one year in the roundup, proving this unit to be quite pricey in the long run.

    If print quality is your ultimate selection criterion, then the d135 rises to the top, and its easy-of-use features give it a definitive edge. It may not be the best bargain in the bunch, but if you want versatility and quality with good speed, the d135 is worth the extra money.

    The HP Officejet 4215 all-in-one combines an ink jet printer, a sheet-fed scanner, and a 20-sheet ADF into a unit the size of a typical ink jet printer ( 7.1 by 16.4 by 8 inches, HWD). It can't scan thick originals such as pages in books, and running photos through a sheet feeder is never a good idea, but the 4215 has an appealing design for basic business needs, letting you print and scan documents for OCR (optical character recognition), faxing, and copying.

    Setting up the 4215 is much like setting up any other ink jet-based AIO that connects via USB. The 4215 uses a black and tricolor cartridge, not dedicated tanks for each color. It also lets you switch between the black cartridge for four-color printing and photo color cartridge for six-color printing. On our tests, however, using the photo cartridge slowed down printing significantly while improving photo quality only marginally.

    The 4215's performance on our tests was unremarkable. It printed four Microsoft PowerPoint slides in 4 minutes 21 seconds and a 12-page Word text file in 2:55. The total time for the business applications suite was 36:20, which is comparable to most other ink jet AIOs in the same price range. For photos, the 4215 was far slower than most ink jet-based AIOs, averaging 6:05 for 4-by-6 photos and 14:33 for 8-by-10s. But you'll get more than twice the speed and only slightly lower quality if you don't use the photo ink cartridge.

    We rated the 4215's output as somewhat better than good for text and photos and very good for graphics. For text, more than half of the fonts we test with were easily readable at 4 points, but two highly stylized fonts needed 12-point size to avoid filling in the holes in lowercase Es. Graphics and photos both suffered from several minor flaws; in each case, it was the number of flaws rather than their severity that lowered the rating.

    Even so, the 4215 offers better output quality than most AIOs in its price class, which makes it a reasonable choice.
