Nowadays, it's possible to crank out a great 4x6 photo just about anywhere. The newly released HP Photosmart 375B, which replaces the highly rated Photosmart 245, looks like it might be a great companion for on-the-go photographers.
Upside: HP has incorporated its new Vivera ink set and improved printheads into its latest line of photo printers, which promise to deliver more vibrant, longer-lasting prints. Wilhelm Imaging Research's test results indicate that Photosmart 375B's prints on the company's new Premium Plus Photo paper will last twice as long as those of last year's Photosmart 245. HP also claims to have shaved approximately 30 seconds off of the printer's rated print 4x6-inch photo print time--down to 1 minute from 90 seconds. You'll still find all of the mobile and direct printing options that were on the 245: You can print from any PictBridge-compatible camera, and every type of media card available, as well as power it via a car charger or a wall socket. Plus, you can now buy an optional Bluetooth adapter to print from enabled camera phones or PDAs. It also supports printing stills from video clips. Other good news: this printer comes with a rechargeable battery pack for truly mobile printing.
Downside: While we're thrilled about the rechargeable battery pack, you'll have to pay for it: this printer costs $50 more than the already pricey, battery-less model, the Photosmart 375, which will set you back $199.99 (list).
Outlook: This printer looks to be a great addition to the smallish circle of portable photo printers. We'll see how it fares against its competition, the Sony DPP-EX50, the Epson PictureMate, and the Canon CP-330, once we get it in for testing. The HP Photosmart 375B is available now for $249.99 (list).

Most multifunction office devices combine several functions in a single box, but can't do each function quite as well as the standalone version of the same device. However, the HP OfficeJet R80 provides a printer, a fax machine, a scanner and a copier that rival their independent counterparts--and for a price tag considerably lower than the acquisition cost of the individual devices. The unit's color inkjet printing capabilities allow users to do color faxing and copying easily and cheaply, and its flatbed scanner gives the look and feel of a standard copy machine.
The unit also has a sheetfed automatic document feeder.
In just about every respect, the HP OfficeJet R80 goes above and beyond what the small office user would expect from a copy station solution. The built-in flatbed scanner provides 36-bit color and 8-bit grayscale capabilities. The unit provides sophisticated copy options, with customizable reduction/enlargement functions that allow for printing from 25% to 400% of original size. The unit's control panel is simple and yet feature-rich, offering one-button access to features such as Autofit (which enlarges and centers a printed image), two-on-one (two sheets on a page), poster (tiled sheets), mirror and more. From the control panel, users can also choose color and print quality modes. The unit, which incorporates a 14.4 Kb-per-second modem, stores up to 100 speed-dial numbers, and supports group dialing, junk fax blocking, fax forwarding and standalone faxing.
The unit's print engine, which prints at up to 600x600 dots per inch in both monochrome and color, is rated for 11 pages per minute in black and white and 8.5ppm for color. In our tests, it did achieve those speeds in its ink-saving EconoFast mode. In the more commonly used Normal mode the unit spit out our three-page, mixed-mode test in an average of one-and-a-half minutes and got up to about 4ppm for our 20-page text test. The resulting output offered excellent color for printing and good color when copying. In some instances, the colors seemed a little washed out on copies. The printer comes bundled with Adobe's PhotoDeluxe Business Edition photo-editing software, which is easy to use and offers a comprehensive feature set.
The unit's single notable drawback is its limited paper capacity of 100 sheets, which just wouldn't be sufficient for the average small workgroup or even for a dual-user environment. However, it does incorporate a 30-page automatic document feeder for input and handles a variety of media types, from plain paper to envelopes and transparencies, as well as wide range of paper sizes, from 4x6 to legal.
At $799, the HP OfficeJet R80 provides a tremendous value for the small office user who wants comprehensive capabilities, and for that reason it's on our WinList.
