The Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 710C is a compact personal ink jet that delivers high-quality output at a bargain price. This color printer lacks its own software bundle but is an easy-to-use PC add-on.
Like some of HP's other ink-jet models, the 710C uses a space-saving case design that fits neatly on most desks. Paper enters the printer via a 100-page input tray, which extends horizontally from the front, and exits directly over the top into an output tray. The input tray's adjustable guides allow for legal-size paper, envelopes, and special-sized media as narrow as 3 inches. This tray also pulls out to allow for easy reloading. Consistent with Hewlett-Packard's latest designs, the DeskJet 710C features a switch that allows the input tray to handle continuous banner paper.
Loading ink into the DeskJet 710C couldn't be simpler. When you lift the cover, the ink cartridges automatically move to the center of the unit for easy access. Side-by-side black and tricolor cartridges insert securely via obvious, green release levers. Because cartridges contain both the ink reservoir and nozzle, they won't make a mess when you change them.
Black text prints at up to 600 x 600 dpi, and the unit uses Hewlett-Packard's PhotoRet II technology to provide brilliant color. In our test we found the DeskJet 710C's output impressive for the printer's price. Text was crisp with smooth curves, and photographic output was well balanced and realistic. Because no application software is included with the DeskJet 710C, you'll need your own programs to design colorful creations. But if you're just looking for a way to add quality output to your system, this is a wise and affordable solution.

In our tests, this unit delivered great photos in crisp color combined with flexible and dependable operation. When using CompactFlash Type I/II or SmartMedia, our photos had clean, true colors on any paper and especially on photo paper. Offering a maximum resolution of 2,400 dpi, we enjoyed getting fast copies of our prints--up to 8.5 pages per minute for color photos (and 11 ppm black text). You can store photos on your computer for many other uses, such as e-mail and sharing albums on Web sites.

Based on the popular HP P1000, the HP PhotoSmart 1215 photo printer directly accepts CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards and prints wirelessly from infrared devices. No PC is required, but it is PC and Mac compatible. With 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution and HP's enhanced layering technology, photos are stunningly beautiful and text is razor sharp. The updated version is faster and quieter and has an optical sensor that automatically adjusts printer settings for the paper type.
To test the PS1215, we inserted our digital camera's CompactFlash card into the PS1215's slot and followed the LCD menus to print an index sheet that contained thumbnails of our photos. We also followed the menus to select a photo to print as an 8-by-10. The process was slow but intuitive, with most of our time spent waiting for the index sheet to print. The results were very good, with exceptionally sharp thumbnails and a surprisingly sharp and colorful 8-by-10, even using the printer's default normal mode.
Next, we installed the software drivers, connected the printer to our PC, and printed our standard test documents using the printer's three modes--draft, normal, and best. Mixed color and black text documents printed at 5.6, 2.1, and 0.9 ppm respectively. Black-only text documents printed at 6.3, 3.9, and 0.6 ppm. (All speeds were adjusted upward to account for first-page delay.) Draft documents were faded; normal documents were sharper and had more accurate color; best documents were exceptionally sharp, requiring close inspection to distinguish them from the output of a laser printer.
The PS1215 shined brilliantly in our color photo tests. On our PC, we used the included photo printing software to select our own high-resolution digital photos and to position them in the software's predefined page layouts. Samples were a bit slow to print--a typical 8-by-10 required 4 minutes and 28 seconds--but the output was superb on HP's premium glossy photo paper (sample pack included). Our samples displayed rich and accurate color, perfect register, fine detail, and realistic skin tones. There was no visible banding or smearing and only the faintest hint of pixelation.
The PhotoSmart 1215 is priced considerably above its sub-$200 rivals, but the dramatic improvements in quality justify the extra cost. It operates quietly, sets up easily, prints very sharp text on a variety of media, and produces beautiful color documents and photos. This remarkable performer is an excellent all-purpose printer. --Mike Brown

The HP Deskjet 6540 is a budget photo printer aimed at those wanting high-quality text and photo prints for a low price.
The unit itself is quite compact, with a relatively small 150-sheet paper tray. This can be increased to 250 with an optional tray but, unless you plan on producing a large number of prints, the standard capacity should be sufficient.
HP claims that the Deskjet 6540 can print at 30 pages-per-minute (ppm), but this is only true in low-quality mode. If you've got important or photo-based documents, you'll probably use the normal or best-quality setting, which can see speeds drop to as low as 2ppm.
To its credit, this is a multi-purpose printer that produces solid results in both text and image-based documents. If you're using photo-quality paper, you can produce very realistic results thanks to the 6540's six-ink colour system.
As with most inkjets, the price of replacing cartridges is an issue, but the 6540's running costs aren't prohibitive. HP claims that its high-capacity tri-colour cartridge, which costs £25, will produce 240 10 x 15cm photo prints.
If you're looking for a low-cost, effective photo printer and don't expect to produce a large volume of work, this is a solid investment.

At first glance, the specifications for the OfficeJet K80 look much like those of OfficeJet G85 we looked at in September. It’s a color printer, scanner, copier, and color fax all-in-one unit with a built-in sheet-fed scanner (the G85 has a flatbed scanner). It comes with a twist: you can use it to send and receive e-mail, though the feature’s constraints may make it impractical.
The front panel offers the typical set of buttons that control the major functions so the machine can work without your PC -- number of copies, paper type, “Color” and “Black” for fax, e-mail, and copy functions. The two-line LCD display panel’s menu is easy to navigate.
Printing
In print tests with our 20-page text-only document, draft mode (300 x 600 dpi) documents printed at 7.9 pages per minute (ppm), while normal mode (600 x 600 dpi) ran at 4.3 ppm. This compares with the manufacturer’s rating of 12 ppm and 6.5 ppm for draft and normal (respectively). The mixed-text-and-graphics test document was produced at 6.7 ppm in draft mode (600 x 300 dpi) and 2.8 ppm in normal mode (also 600 x 300 dpi), compared to HP’s 10 ppm and 5 ppm ratings for color documents.
Black text was crisp and easy to read, though we wish the ink would dry faster (it’s easy to smudge if you remove it from the output tray too soon after printing). Solid color boxes were rendered well, clip art was produced in the right shades, and draft mode, while lighter than other HP models I’ve tested, is acceptable for judging alignment or font size before final printing.
Photos also looked good, thanks to HP’s PhotoRET III color laying technology. A 6 x 7.5" photo on plain paper looked fine, up to the usual HP standards. Using glossy photo paper, the K80 uses its top resolution (2400 x 1200 dpi) and output looked good considering it doesn’t use photo ink cartridges.
The 22-pound printer offers a 150-sheet input tray and 50-sheet output tray.
Fax
Fax performance and quality is very good. The unit includes a 20-page automatic document feeder, 100 speed dials and 10 one-touch keys. You can also create a single speed dial to send faxes to 20 different recipients. The K80 can work as a standalone fax machine or you can use the printer driver that comes bundled with the machine and fax directly from your Windows application. The K80 includes 90 pages worth of fax memory for storing incoming faxes if you run out of paper or for storing outgoing images queued for later delivery. Another nice feature: a legal-size document is automatically reduced to letter size for transmission.
The standard fax features, such as auto redial of busy numbers and auto answer mode are part of the K80’s feature set.
Scanning and Copying
By default the scanner can handle up to 600 x 1200 dpi (3600 dpi enhanced) scans in 36-bit color and 8-bit grayscale. There was one problem, however. While copies of several text-only documents resulted in acceptable, but not great, output (the resolution drops to 600 x 600 for copies), using the scanner with the included ReadIRIS OCR package gave poor results. In fact, despite changing a variety of scanner settings, I wondered if typing the text from scratch would have been faster. That’s very unusual, as ReadIRIS is quite accurate.
You can “scan to” a variety of destinations, including e-mail and Word, either using the OfficeJet software’s on-screen menu or the on-panel “Scan To” button. The TWAIN driver, for acquiring images from the scanner, was easy to use from the Windows applications I tested.
The Web Connection
Another distinctive feature of the K80 is its ability to work with Netdirect, letting you print e-mail messages (so much for the paperless office), send documents to an e-mail address, and print web pages without a computer. There are several limitations to Netdirect; you get a 60-day or 25-minute (whichever occurs first) trial, then you’ll have to sign up for the service, paying on a cost-per-minute basis (there are also three plans that reduce the per-minute cost and carry a minimum number of minutes each month, like cellular phone plans).
Netdirect’s limitations may make the feature more gee-whiz than practical for you. First, there’s the extra cost; you can scan a document and send it as an e-mail attachment now with very little difficulty, and unless your ISP or e-mail service provider charges by the message, there’s probably no additional cost to you, and there’s little speed advantage to using Netdirect. To send an e-mail with Netdirect you must have the recipient’s e-mail address entered into one of the speed dial settings (which you can do via software or tediously through the LCD display) and use that speed dial to send the message. Likewise, you must allocate a speed dial setting to any URL for Web pages you want to print. This strikes me as a lot of bother and expense for very little payback.
I also don’t want my e-mail automatically printed – I’ll be wasting paper and ink on spam. Having e-mail print automatically also means you can’t use an e-mail client to manage your messages or keep a message archive.

Opening the unit's top cover causes the print carriage to automatically position itself for cartridge loading. The unit takes separate color and ink cartridges, which snap in easily. The software CD provided us a well-integrated interface for both learning about the product and installing the software bundle. The T45 ships with I.R.I.S. optical character recognition software and Q & A PhotoRecall Deluxe image-editing software.
When a page is inserted into the input tray of the T45, the HP OfficeJet Manager is automatically launched to assist you in faxing, copying, scanning, or e-mailing the document. While this utility certainly helps to make the machine easy to use, we found many operations are much faster when done directly through the unit's console versus through the PC.
The T45 uses a parallel connection to connect to your PC and a phone line to provide fax functions. We set up the T45 in just a few minutes. We copied a standard black and white page in 35 seconds locally, but it took a minute and twenty seconds when copied through the Manager program. Color copies took a minute and fifteen seconds through the console and three minutes using the Manager. The speed difference is due to the fact that, when operating from the Manger, the T45 scans pages before printing the copies.
Our 10-page plain-text document averaged 3 ppm when printed in normal mode, a bit below the unit's rated 5 ppm. We also scanned 4-by-6-inch photos in a snappy 25 seconds each.
The T45 produces good performance suitable for most environments. The output quality is also right on the mark for units at this price. We were impressed with the unit's control panel, which features a numeric keypad and LCD panel, as well as prominent fax, copying, and scanning buttons. Separate color and black copy buttons reduces the need to switch settings between jobs.
The HP OfficeJet T45 is a great way to get all of your input and output needs met on a budget. Backed by HP's excellent reputation and mature technology, the T45 is a reliable companion. --Stephen W. Plain

The more affordable of the two, the HP Officejet 5110 all-in-one ($199 direct) is built around HP's 4,800- by 1,200-dpi print engine and can print up to 12 pages per minute (ppm) in black and 10 ppm in color. Just follow the easy setup directions (be sure to install the software first), and installation should be trouble-free. But buy a USB cable, because HP doesn't include one.
The front panel gives you good control, making walk-up fax and copy tasks easy to accomplish without touching a PC. The unit has dedicated fax, scan, and copy buttons, but some of the other buttons serve multiple functions and may take time to learn to navigate. There are only five one-touch fax-number buttons, but you can store up to 70 numbers in memory. On the computer side, HP Director is a handy utility that gives you quick access to the various functions.
The foundation for any multifunction device is print quality; fortunately, the 5110 doesn't force you to compromise on output quality in order to save desk space. On our quality tests, black-and-white text documents had laserlike clarity, and solid areas of color were smooth and saturated. And when printing on glossy photo paper using Best mode, the results were nearly indistinguishable from a photographic print. We observed no banding, and gradient colors are smooth without a hint of posterizing. Details are sharp in highlight and shadow alike. The printer uses HP's PhotoREt III that includes color layering to minimize dithering.
As for speed, we timed a black-and-white Microsoft Word document at 3.2 ppm—very good for an ink jet–based MFP. An 8- by 10-inch glossy photo printed in about 4 minutes 44 seconds; that's not blazingly fast, but the results were worth the wait.
The device also has a sheet-fed 600- by 1,200-dpi, 36-bit color scanner with an ADF that can hold up to 20 sheets. Though not as versatile as a flatbed scanner with a document feeder, the 5110 will handle most copying and faxing that you put in the tray—in color or black and white. Scans and copies were good, and the included optical character reader utility (ReadIris) did a passable job at reading text (though you'll want to supply a more robust OCR package if you use this feature often).
