The HP Photosmart 8750 Professional Photo Printer ($499.99 direct) is one of the rare ink jet printers designed primarily for photos at sizes up to 13 by 19 inches. And although you can use it as an all-purpose printer, it's best as a second printer reserved strictly for photos.
At 10 by 25.3 by 24.1 inches (HWD), the Photosmart 8750 has a large footprint, but still manages a sleek look, with a gray finish punctuated by a flip-up LCD panel, memory card slots, and a PictBridge connector for cameras. Inside, the printer takes three cartridges with six to nine ink colors, depending on which ones you use. It ships with a tricolor cartridge with cyan, yellow, and magenta; a photo gray cartridge with three shades of gray; and what HP calls a blue photo cartridge, with light cyan, light magenta, and blue, for a total of nine colors and a wider gamut than most photo printers.
You can swap the blue photo cartridge for one with light cyan, light magenta, and black, and swap the photo gray for a black cartridge. We ran our text and graphics tests with a blue photo, a tricolor, and a black cartridge (7 colors) for fastest times. For photos, we used the nine-ink configuration for best quality.
Photos were at the high end of very good, just missing out on excellent. Most images qualified as true photo quality, but we saw a sprinkling of minor issues, including a slight tint in one photo that gave clouds a pink tinge. Graphics were also at the high end of very good, and text was at the high end of good.
Performance was less impressive, averaging 2 minutes 29 seconds for each 4-by-6 and 5:20 for each 8-by-10. The similarly priced Canon i9900, another photo printer that prints up to 13- by 19-inch output, took just 30 seconds for each 4-by-6 and 1:05 for each 8-by-10. The HP printer is faster for business applications, at 18:05 total on our test suite compared with the i9900's 25:19, but then, neither printer is intended for all-purpose printing.
More relevant is that HP claims a 100-year lifetime for 8750 output displayed under glass, or 200 years in a photo album, a claim that Canon doesn't make. If you care about long-lasting prints, you may decide it's worth waiting a little extra time for the output.

WHAT'S HOT: HP's DeskJet 882C scores high, thanks to its quick 4.3-ppm text performance and relatively fast 0.8-ppm graphics speed. A $50 price cut sweetens the deal, bringing the cost down to $249. Text shows a hint of unattractive shadowing, but letterforms are perfectly weighted and accurate, even at small sizes. On graphics, the 882C produces handsome color and gray-scale images. In fact, the 882C is probably the best of the printers on the chart for printing graphics, particularly on ink jet paper. Another plus: Its great collection of home-oriented software includes Microsoft's Picture It Express, Print Master Gold Publishing Suite, and Professor Franklin's Instant Photo Effects.
WHAT'S NOT: Some people may dislike the 882C's bulky power supply. Also, finished print jobs cover the slot into which you would feed single envelopes.
WHAT ELSE: With both parallel and USB ports, the 882C comes ready to connect to most PCs. It also features the same print-drying flaps found on the 812C.
BEST USE: SOHO users will like the 882C's speed, while its top-notch graphics and ease of use will please families.

WHAT'S HOT: HP whacked $100 off the 895Cse's price, bringing it to a more reasonable $299. This HP performs swiftly, pumping out text at 4.6 ppm and graphics at 1 ppm. Gray-scale and color graphics consist of subtle textures, smooth transitions, and bright colors. The 895Cse also features HP's trademark drying flaps, found also on the DeskJet 812C.
WHAT'S NOT: We expect a little better print quality from a near-$300 printer. Letters show a slight hint of fuzziness. The 895Cse could also do a better job on lines; narrow parallel lines run in together.
WHAT ELSE: The 895Cse offers both a USB port and well-organized, thorough documentation. The package includes some good software: KMT's Office in Color (templates for Microsoft Office applications); HP Instant Delivery, which automates retrieval of Web pages that change, such as online newspapers; and Photo Recall, a digital-image database. The 895Cse has a boxy, no-nonsense look like the 812C and 882C.
BEST USE: This HP model is best suited to those who print a lot of photos and illustrations.

WHAT'S HOT: Print quality is the HPs 932C's strong suit. The unit produces sharp black text and distinct narrow lines, and it prints graphics with subtle shading, fine detail, and realistic colors. The 932C does even better if you use high-quality ink jet paper. We also like the printer's envelope bypass feeder, which lets you print a single envelope without emptying the main paper tray. At 3.6 cents per page for black ink and 11.1 cents per page for color ink, its consumables costs are comparatively reasonable. And new drivers give it a significant bump in text-printing speed, from 3.6 pages per minute to 4.1 ppm (graphics speed remains at 0.7 ppm).
WHAT'S NOT: Although the 932C can print on legal-size paper, the paper tray isn't designed for that size, so a couple inches of the longer paper hang off the edge.
WHAT ELSE: Popping out the 932C's back paper guide and slipping in an optional $79 duplexer permit you to print on both sides of the page without flipping pages over by hand. HP's $100 JetDirect print server can put the 932C on a network. The 932C features a curvy, bulbous profile with nary a straight line, all colored in several shades of leathery tan. And it runs whisper-quiet.
BEST USE: Strong print quality and improved performance make the 932C welcome in any office or home.
