The OfficeJet 9110 offers fast copying and printing. It also features high-resolution, flatbed color scanning with 2,400 dpi optical resolution (up to 19,200 dpi enhanced) in full 48-bit color.
The OfficeJet 9110 has built-in color faxing, featuring 99 speed dial locations, up to 250 pages of fax memory, fax forwarding, delayed fax, auto-reduction and enlargement, distinctive ring detection, and junk barrier. Plus, the OfficeJet 9110 makes document management simple. You can direct incoming faxes directly to an email inbox or network file (requires optional print server), email images directly from a photo memory card, or share and archive information at the touch of a button.
The 9110 is designed so that functions can be performed simultaneously without long wait times between jobs. For example, it lets you scan a document into memory while it's printing another job, or scan a fax into memory and then digitally send a document without interrupting the fax transmission. HP DeskJet 6127 has USB ports, and its installation is a snap. It automatically prints an alignment page and adjust its printheads as it prints it; no user intervention required. HP DeskJet 6127 has 1,200-by-1,200 black resolution and up to 4,800-by-1,200 in optimized color mode. It uses HP's PhotoREt III technology for improved color layering. From this strong starting point, it diverges.
The HP Deskjet 6127 is rated nearly as fast as the 1100d, though these claims did not hold up on our tests. Draft modes are rated at 20 ppm in black and 13 ppm in color. Normal modes are rated at 7 ppm in black and 5 ppm in color.
A duplexer comes standard, and there's an envelope feed slot in the output tray. One feature in the 6127 that the 1100d can't match is a network interface. As more and more people set up networks for their homes and small offices, this feature becomes increasingly handy. You don't have to leave a computer on to act as a print server so that other computers on the network could use the printer. And you don't have to be a network expert to set it up. When you install the driver, it polls the network and finds the printer on its own.
The 6127 uses the typical HP configuration of a single black cartridge and a separate tricolor tank for cyan, magenta, and yellow. Both cartridges include the printheads, so you get fresh printheads every time you replace the tanks.
The robust driver includes thumbnails and poster printing and even has digital controls for enhancing photo images for printing. A separate utility makes it easy to capture and print the contents of your computer screen. The 6127 had the third lowest cost per page of any printer we tested, at just 4 cents per page, and very good total cost of ownership considering its high purchase price. If only the speed were better!
Print quality will please just about anyone. Text as small as 4 points was legible in all but the boldest fonts; gradient fills were smooth, and alignment was excellent. Colors were vivid, with plenty of detail in deep shadows and in bright highlights on photos. Finally, the photo and graphic print quality was very good.

To most people, multifunction device means compromise. The HP OfficeJet G95 should change that. It does faxing, color scanning, and black-and-white and color digital copying, and color duplex printing. It even has a network connection .
Color printing is quick and quiet, and output is beautiful. Hewlett-Packard's Photo REt III Precision Technology provides four-color printing at resolutions up to 2,400-by-1,200. The Twain-compatible flatbed scanning function and the automatic sheet feeder make copying and fax tasks simple. Add a comprehensive software bundle and printing a poster to making a page of wallet photos from a single print becomes a breeze. The versatile HP OfficeJet G95 gives uncompromising performance in a convenient package.

The newest addition at the top of HP's photo printer lineup, the Photosmart 8450, replaces last year's high-end offering, the HP Photosmart 7960, which earned solid marks for its photo-print quality and plethora of direct-printing options. We expect good things out of the 8450, which introduces photo enthusiasts to HP's new Vivera ink set and accompanying printhead technology. The overall result, HP claims, is more-vibrant, longer-lasting output as well as increased speed.
Upside: According to numbers from Wilhelm Imaging Research, widely regarded as the gold standard in print-longevity research, the new Vivera inks add 15 to 20 years to the life of eight-color ink prints when used in conjunction with HP's new high-end Premium Plus Photo paper; this means that HP-produced prints stored under glass can last more than 100 years. In addition to the new inks, HP has improved control over drop-size variation and the printer's color look-up tables. The combined effect, the company hopes, is improved color accuracy and better-looking output. HP also claims to have shaved 30 seconds off the rated photo-print time (we dinged the 7690 for its sluggishness). Like its big brother, the HP Photosmart 8450 comes loaded with direct-printing options: you can print directly from any PictBridge-compatible digital camera via the USB port and from an array of digital media slots on the printer's front panel (CompactFlash I and II, MMC, SD, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, and xD cards). And now you can also print photos from any Bluetooth-enabled camera phone or PDA.
Downside: HP still clings to the combo ink cartridges with built-in printheads, which tends to keep consumables costs up. That's a major drawback for photo enthusiasts.
Outlook: At $300 (list price), the 8450 costs slightly more than competing models. Based on specs alone, the HP Photosmart 8450 looks like it might turn out to be a good choice for nascent photo enthusiasts, but as always, we'll withhold judgment until we get it to CNET Labs for testing.

WHAT'S HOT: The Photosmart 1218 appeals most to digital-camera slingers. It features two slots that read SmartMedia and CompactFlash memory cards, so you can print photos directly from a digital camera. Using the control panel and LCD screen, you can access menus to select which images to print, set their size and crop them, arrange them in simple layouts, and even apply a few special effects, such as rendering photos in sepia tones. If your camera doesn't use the supported memory cards, it may still be able to communicate with the Photosmart 1218 via its infrared port.
As a general-purpose printer attached to a PC, the Photosmart 1218 acquits itself handily: It cranks out clear, slightly grayish text at a zippy 5.2 pages per minute, and calm, carefully textured color graphics at a respectable 0.9 ppm. The 1218 also prints breathtaking gray-scale photos on ordinary paper, while on coated ink jet paper its gray-scales and its color photos both testify that digital photography is no longer an empty marketing promise.
WHAT'S NOT: The Photosmart 1218's $399 price tag may be too high for anyone who's not serious about printing photographs. The paper feeder includes a well for snapshot-size media, a flap to support folded banner media, a bypass slot to feed a single envelope without emptying the main tray, and a long, wobbly extension for legal-size paper. The various paper feeders work, but the ensemble feels like a Rube Goldberg contraption, and prints in the output tray block access to the input tray.
WHAT ELSE: Though its purchase price is steep, the Photosmart 1218's ink costs are not: A page of black text uses about 3.6 cents' worth of ink, and a page of graphics only 11.2 cents' worth. (Keep in mind that full-page photos use quite a bit more ink--five to ten times as much.) Also, HP includes an automatic duplexer as standard equipment with the 1218, so if you print long text documents you can save some money by printing on both sides of the page.
BEST USE: The PhotoSmart 1218 is a sweet deal if you're serious about digital photography, but it may be too expensive for those who aren't enthusiasts.

The HP Photosmart 8150 Photo Printer ($200 street) from Hewlett Packard is the smaller, less expensive cousin of the Photosmart 8450. It can easily serve as an all-purpose printer, with good performance across the board and output quality that ranges from just short of very good to excellent. But what makes the 8150 of special interest is a color LCD and kiosk-style menu features that let you fix flaws in your photos when you print without a computer.
Even a quick glance at the 8150 suggests that it's not a typical ink jet. The 2.5-inch LCD on the front panel is complemented by about a dozen buttons and knobs, along with slots for six memory-card formats. There's also a USB port for a PictBridge camera, USB key, or a $50 Bluetooth adapter. The LCD lets you preview your pictures, and the buttons let you work through the direct-printing menus to crop photos, remove red-eye, adjust brightness, apply digital flash, and more, with no computer in sight. You can also pick a frame to print from a video clip.
Setup is typical for an ink jet connected by USB cable, except for the ink choices. The printer comes with one tricolor cartridge and one color photo cartridge. But you can replace the photo-ink cartridge with a black cartridge, as we did for our business-applications suite, or with a photo-gray cartridge, which is intended for black-and-white photos.
Output quality is in the top tier for ink jets, ranking just short of very good for text and graphics and excellent for photos. More than half the fonts we test are easily readable at 4 points, although some stylized fonts require 12 points. Graphics suffer only from banding in default mode and a tendency for full-page output to make the paper curl just a bit.
Performance is also a plus. The total time of 17 minutes 42 seconds on our business-applications suite is faster than all but a handful of ink jets and not much slower than the fastest we've seen, the Canon Pixma iP4000 and Pixma iP3000, which each had a total time of 15:48. For photos, the 1:52 average for 4-by-6 prints and the 4:23 average for 8-by-10s is similarly faster than most ink jets, although only about one-fourth the speed of the $480 Canon i9900.
With this level of output quality and performance, the HP Photosmart 8150 is interesting as both an all-purpose printer and a good choice for printing photos without a computer.

With its new PSC 950 all-in-one, Hewlett-Packard is targeting budding digital photographers who want a printer that does more than just print.
Available now for $399, the 950 packs not only a four-color ink jet printer, but a high-quality scanner that lets you scan, copy, and even fax documents (via a built-in modem). Special slots also accept CompactFlash, SmartMedia, or a Sony Memory stick, so you can move images straight from your camera to the printer, bypassing your PC altogether.
Traditionally, all-in-one products have been geared toward home offices, but HP aims its PSC directly at consumers, says George Brasher, HP's all-in-one product manager. He says this device doesn't force those customers to compromise quality for convenience and space savings--a longstanding criticism of multifunction devices.
HP: Serious Printing
The device builds on HP standard technology, Brasher says.
"The 950 has our best-quality [ink jet] printing engine," he says. It's the same engine HP uses in its DeskJet 970 ink jet printer and its PhotoSmart P1000, he says. That means it can print images at 2400 by 1200 dots per inch, which makes it great for regular print jobs as well as photos. The unit has two paper trays: one for standard 8.5-by-11-inch office paper, and one for 4-by-6-inch photo paper.
According to HP, the 950 prints black and white pages at 12 pages per minute and full-color pages at 10 pages per minute. (However PC World's lab tests show that rated speeds generally surpass real-world printing speeds.)
The 950's scanner offers 600 by 1200 dpi optical scanning resolution, with 9600-dpi enhanced resolution and 36-bit color. HP includes optical character recognition software with the package.
While HP didn't design the 950 for a heavy faxing load, it's fine for limited faxing, Brasher says. Because it's a flat-bed scanner, it is really only practical to send short faxes of two or three pages, since you have to load in a single page at a time. However, the unit can receive an unlimited number of fax pages without hassle, he notes.
Easy Photo Printing
In addition to its 4-by-6-inch photo-paper tray, the 950 offers several other niceties for digital camera aficionados. Most noticeable: the three slots for digital media.
All you have to do is take your digital media out of your camera--regardless of whether its CompactFlash, SmartMedia, or Sony's Memory stick--and insert it into the right slot, he says. The 950 then prints a proof sheet of thumbnail-sized photos residing on the media.
You take that sheet and fill in the spots next to the photos you want to print. On the same piece of paper, you fill in the paper type, size, and number of copies you want. Place that sheet on the 950's scanner, press a button, and the device reads the sheet and gets to work. You never have to touch your PC during the process, he says.

WHAT'S HOT: The Deskjet 940c printed narrow lines well, and gray-scale images looked wonderful in our tests, even on ordinary paper. Graphics and glossy photographs retained fine detail and texture, but graphics had too much cyan and glossies were somewhat dark. A superb online manual includes informative animations. The driver's handy graphics mode makes graphics legible for copying or faxing.
WHAT'S NOT: HP provides a miserly 90-day limited warranty with only 30 days of telephone support and no toll-free number. We rated the printer's speed as average, at 4.7 ppm for text and 0.7 ppm for graphics in tests. Output text looked grayish, and large letters showed minor hatching around the edges.
WHAT ELSE: An $80 duplexer lets you print on both sides of a page. HP's black ink costs a steepish 6 cents per page; color prints are a reasonable 13.8 cents each.
UPSHOT: The $149 price is right, and performance and print quality are fine, but a chintzy warranty gives us pause.

Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The PSC 2210 lets you do it all: print, scan, copy, and fax--all in color. It prints 17 pages per minute black-and-white, and 12 ppm in color. Print from your digital camera memory card using convenient memory-card slots (CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, Sony Memory Stick) and up to 4,800 x 1,200 optimized color dpi.
Print photos directly from your digital camera without a PC, including borderless 4-by-6-inch photos using HP premium plus photo papers. Enjoy laser-quality black text and brilliant color printing and copying, plus preview, select, and print your digital photos using the HP photo proof sheet feature.
Photos printed with the PSC 2210 resist fading for up to 65 years (requires premium photo-plus paper and six-ink color printing with optional HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge).
The copier's flatbed design simplifies scanning and copying a variety of documents, even books and 3-D objects. Copy at up to 17 copies per minute in black, 12 cpm in color. A copy-option button gives easy photo reprints, posters, and more.
You'll also get high-quality scanning with 1,200 x 2,400 dpi optical resolution, flatbed color faxing with a 33.6 Kbps fax modem, a one-touch front-panel scan button, and a paper-type sensor that automatically adjusts print settings.

WHAT'S HOT: The HP PSC 2210 earned high scores for print and scan quality. The colors on the device's prints were generally realistic, though a bit dark in some places. Its scan quality was second only to that of the Brother MFC-4420C, but it outperformed that MFP in our print and copy tests. The PSC 2210 garnered the best quality scores in our 4-by-5 color and line-art scan tests.
The PSC 2210 had the second-best overall scores in our text and line-art print tests. The sharp, easily readable documents it produced were second only to the HP LaserJet 3330mfp's output in overall quality.
The device's memory-card readers support the CompactFlash, Secure Digital, SmartMedia, and Memory Stick formats. If you're a digital photo enthusiast, you'll appreciate the PSC 2210's photo index system. After you insert a memory card with photos, the device prints a proof sheet containing photo thumbnails. You simply check those you want to print, and then scan the sheet to generate your prints--all without the aid of a PC.
The PSC 2210's built-in fax is easy to use. At the machine's lowest resolution, you can fax up to 50 pages without using your PC. When we faxed at the standard 300-dpi resolution, however, the memory was full after 13 pages.
WHAT'S NOT: The HP PSC 2210 was slow in most of our scan tests. It took 41 seconds to scan a 4-by-5-inch color print at 100 dpi, and it practically crawled at 56 seconds when scanning a one-page Word document (the average MFP scan time for this document was 37 seconds). And at $300, the PSC 2210 is among the more expensive MFPs we looked at.
WHAT ELSE: The Iris OCR engine built into HP's Photo and Imaging software is serviceable, but we didn't find it as useful as the Abbyy FineReader OCR engine used in the drivers of the Dell A940, the Lexmark X5150, and the PrinTrio X75.
The interface of HP's Photo and Imaging software is simple: Its control panel is a 1-inch horizontal bar with big icons that allow easy access to such basic functions as copying and scanning. Though the driver doesn't indicate how much ink you have left when you print, you can find this information elsewhere in the program.
UPSHOT: The PSC 2210 produces some of the best output we've seen from an MFP, but it can be pokey, and it doesn't come cheap.
