HP's Deskjet 5150 costs only $100, and prints very attractive photos. Printing on glossy paper and using the optional photo-ink cartridge--which costs an extra $25--the Deskjet 5150 produced superb color photos with smooth texture and very sharp detail. A window in the print driver called HP Digital Photography simplified the process, thanks in part to an easy-to-use red-eye removal tool, a slider for increasing contrast, and a digital flash effect for brightening shadows. We also liked the fine detail and sharp focus of the Deskjet 5150's gray-scale printouts, despite their slightly yellowish cast.
Because the 5150 can hold only two cartridges at a time, you must swap the black cartridge for the photo-ink cartridge in order to make top-quality photo prints. When you swap cartridges, the printer automatically realigns its print heads. Unfortunately, that process lasted 8 minutes in our test; however, the printer needs to realign the print heads only once--the first time you insert the photo-ink cartridge--because it stores the calibration settings in memory for later use. If you forget which cartridges you last installed, however, you can't figure it out by checking under the hood; the latches that hold the cartridges in place also cover their labels. Instead, you have to check the driver, which means that both the printer and your PC have to be powered up. You can reinsert partly used cartridges, but when not using them, you should keep them in the storage container that HP includes with the optional photo-ink cartridge.
The 5150 printed at average speeds: 4.6 pages per minute for text and 1.5 ppm on graphics. On plain paper it produced sufficiently black text that was marred by some spattering. Narrow parallel lines in printouts impressed us by being distinct and almost free of random spray. Essentially, for $100, the Deskjet 5150 duplicates the quality and performance of the $250 Deskjet 5850, but without the built-in Wi-Fi and ethernet connections. Estimated per-page ink costs are high; about 4.4 cents per page of plain text, and roughly 13.4 cents per page of light graphics.
The Deskjet 5150's output tray rests on top of the main paper tray, but you have to remove it to access the main tray. There is no envelope bypass slot, and the Deskjet 5150 doesn't support an add-on paper tray, but you can snap HP's $95 optional duplexer into the back. The 5150's power-converting brick plugs directly into a wall socket, where it may block other sockets.
HP's documentation could be stronger: A cursory poster covers installation, and a 14-page brochure mostly refers you to the on-screen manual. Though the on-screen manual provides thorough coverage on how to use and maintain the printer, it displays information in tiny chunks in a small, unstretchable window; and because you can't simultaneously look at the index or table of contents, navigation quickly becomes annoying.
If you're considering the Deskjet 5150 for office use, you may appreciate its driver setting for printing documents with a coarse texture so they will reproduce better when faxed or photocopied.
UPSHOT: The Deskjet 5150 is a solid, low-cost choice for printing top-notch photos--as long as you don't mind swapping ink cartridges.

WHAT'S HOT: Its support for 13-by-19-inch sheets of paper makes the CP 1700 good for heavy graphics use, and an optional duplexer ($130) permits you to generate comps of a whole form without taping pieces together. We liked the unit's clean black text; its ability to print narrow parallel lines cleanly; and the subtle, very detailed gray-scale and color photos it produced. It prints text over a USB 1.1 connection at a reasonable 5.4 pages per minute, though its 1 -ppm graphics speed might try your patience, especially if you use HP's $200 adapter to put the CP 1700 on an ethernet network. (PC World did not test the CP 1700's ethernet performance, but in most cases an ethernet connection runs somewhat slower than a direct USB 1.1 connection.) More paper-handling pluses include a hand-feed slot in the rear to handle media that shouldn't bend as it passes through, and a 10-sheet bypass feeder that lets you print on letterhead without emptying the main tray. More than one user can connect using USB, parallel, and ethernet at the same time--the CP 1700 manages the print queue, aided by 16MB of memory. For heavy use, you can add an optional 250-sheet paper tray ($130). HP's ink costs, specified at 2.1 cents for black and 8.4 for light-duty color, are among the lowest we've seen for an ink jet printer.
WHAT'S NOT: The CD 1700 comes at a stiff price ($499), so make sure you need its specialized talents before pulling out your checkbook. The tabloid-size paper tray is immense, and we found adjusting it for various sizes of paper somewhat clumsy--the sliders move reluctantly and the stops are poorly labeled. The accompanying printed documentation is brief and uninformative; the on-screen help files are better, though not superdetailed. For some odd reason, the driver's watermark feature can print in only a few basic colors.
WHAT ELSE: The CP 1700 has a built-in infrared port, so notebook wielders can zap files to it without hooking up cables. An LCD on the control panel informs you about error conditions and ink status.
UPSHOT: The costly 1700 offers a lot of capability, but you should consider it only if you need a printer that can handle outsize paper.

The $100 HP Deskjet 5740 is a simple, reliable inkjet printer. Though not particularly eye-catching, it produces nice-looking prints.
Paper feeds from a 100-sheet-capacity tray at the front that sits below the 50-sheet-capacity output tray. You don't need special perforated paper to print borderless 4-by-6-inch photos: You can use standard 4-by-6-inch photo paper--and the 5740 can print without borders on letter-size paper too. Beneath the cover you'll find slots for two ink cartridges. With the printer you get a black cartridge and a cartridge containing three colored inks, for general-purpose printing. The printer can perform six-color printing, too, but this requires a photo color cartridge (with light versions of cyan and magenta inks) that you have to buy separately and then substitute for the black cartridge.
The 5740 doesn't break any speed records. In our tests, text pages printed at a moderate 5.8 pages per minute, and graphics at 1.5 ppm. Both speeds are slightly above average among inkjets we've tested recently.
The 5740's print quality was good across the board. Text looked sharper than that of the other HP printers we reviewed in December 2004, but bleeding between closely spaced bold lettering was noticeable. Line art looked excellent, with nice straight lines and no banding. Our plain-paper color graphics displayed reasonably faithful colors and had enough detail in dark areas, but they were a bit grainy upon close inspection. On photo paper, the printer performed even better, generating sharp images, natural colors, and plenty of contrast even in darker areas. The grayscale image had a slightly greenish tinge, with smooth gradations and fine detail.
A new set of print heads comes embedded in each ink cartridge, extending the life of the printer, but increasing the cartridges' price: The black cartridge costs $30; the tricolor and photo cartridges, $25 each.
The 5740 comes with a USB 2.0 port for connecting it to your PC, but no parallel port. If you have a digital camera, you may be disappointed that the printer has neither a PictBridge port nor a media card slot. HP software guides you through printing photos, enlargements, and album pages.
UPSHOT: The HP Deskjet 5740 won't win any awards for speed or economy; but for all-around print quality, it's a good little performer.

Priced at $399, the HP Deskjet 9650 has a wide carriage that can handle paper 13 inches across and up to 4 feet long--and its paper-feeding smarts don't stop there.
The input tray holds 150 sheets of paper, so you won't have to refill it constantly, and the printer has a 10-sheet bypass feeder for envelopes and letterhead. Inside the main paper tray, an odd but effective plunger mechanism pushes a stack of snapshot-size media up to the paper path. A slot in the back draws in heavy stock and feeds it through the printer without bending it. As with many HP printers, exiting print jobs stack over the paper input tray. But instead of having an output tray that gets in the way when you want to add paper, the 9650's sturdy output support flips up and stays open, providing free access to the input tray. If you want to make double-sided prints, buy the Deskjet 9670; it's the same printer but with a duplexer, for $100 more. If you're undecided, you can later buy a duplexer for the 9650 separately for $129.
The 9650 shares one inconvenient trait with some other HP inkjets: You have to swap the printer's black and photo cartridges, depending on what you're printing; and the first time you do this, the printer runs an alignment routine. At least HP provides all three cartridges with the printer. If you print a lot of photos, you may be disappointed that the 9650 has neither a PictBridge port nor memory card slots. In our page yield tests, printing plain black on the Deskjet 9650 cost a steep 5.1 cents per page (the average number for general-purpose models tested for our August 2004 issue was 4.3 cents). For color plus black (not photos), this printer was among the most expensive models tested, at 13.8 cents per page.
The 9650 doesn't break any speed records: It printed text at a below-average 4.1 pages per minute, and it generated graphics (not photos) at 0.9 ppm--a bit below the average. On plain paper, text looked black and clean in headlines but a bit choppy in smaller type sizes, and better-quality inkjet paper didn't improve the output significantly. Color prints on plain paper showed sharp detail and relatively good color. With photo inks on glossy paper, the 9650's prints of gray-scale photos exhibited uncanny depth despite having a somewhat scratchy texture, and color photos came out in sharp focus with smooth textures and realistic colors, though some detail disappeared in shadow areas.
UPSHOT: The wide-format Deskjet 9650 delivers consistently good print quality on many kinds of documents. This printer is no speed demon, however, and its costs per page are quite high.

WHAT'S HOT: HP's PSC 2175 has added the same twist to the basic multifunction printer that it's added to many of its printers: flash-memory slots. The $200 MFP's four slots read CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SD, or Smart Media cards. With a memory card inserted, the PSC 2175 can print a proof sheet of thumbnails, each with a fill-in bubble. There are additional bubbles to select print and paper size, border type (if any), and single or double prints?but each choice applies to all the photos you're printing. The PSC 2175 scans the proof sheet for your marks, and then prints your selections. You can improve the quality of the photo prints by installing an optional $35 photo-ink cartridge.
The PSC 2175 impressed us with good print quality in most areas. On plain paper, it produced very attractive gray-scale photos and detailed, sharply focused color photos; it even managed to print narrow parallel lines that didn't bleed together. Using the optional photo-ink cartridge, the PSC 2175 produced superb glossy photos in best quality setting, and did so in less than two-and-a-half minutes?43 percent faster than the test-set average. Our panel also judged its scan quality near the top of the pack.
When making copies, you can use the control panel to scan two pages and reduce them to print side by side on one page, reverse the image to print on iron-on transfer media, blow up a page to create a poster, and use other features that are usually accessible only from a printer driver.
WHAT'S NOT: The PSC 2175 scanned very slowly. At high resolution, it was the slowest scanner by far, taking over 2.5 minutes to scan a 2-by-2-inch color image, more than twice the average for ink jet MFPs we've tested. It scanned a text page at 300 dpi in 51 seconds (which was 46 percent slower than average). It performed better when scanning a 4-by-5-inch color photo at low resolution, but at 38.2 seconds was still 9 seconds slower than the test-set average. Though the PSC 2175's price is not high considering its flash-memory slots, this MFP doesn't fax. One minor annoyance: Because the output tray rests on top of the input tray, the narrow gap between them makes loading paper a little awkward. Unlike most other HP printers, the PSC 2175 won't let you prop up the output tray; if you want more room, you have to remove it.
WHAT ELSE: Print and copy speeds were about 20 percent faster than test-set averages overall. The PSC 2175 printed text at 4 ppm and color graphics at 0.6 ppm. Copy speeds were average. The printed text, however, looked a bit gray and slightly rough around the edges--good enough for ordinary use, but not as sharp as you might want for business correspondence.
The PSC 2175's lid slides up on its hinges for scanning or copying thick items such as books, but it doesn't come off to accommodate outsize documents. If you want to do a lot of scanning or copying, keep in mind that this MFP doesn't have an automatic document feeder.
The heart of HP's software bundle is a suite of HP-labeled utilities, including HP Director, a floating tool bar that launches various functions such as scanning or copying images from flash cards to your PC; HP Memories Disc Creator, for creating slide shows and other photo presentations, as well as for burning your pics onto CDs; HP Photo Gallery, an image archive with templates for creating on-screen or printed photo albums; and HP Image Editor, a basic photo editor that lets you perform basic image-correction tasks and add text notes to your photos. The software also includes the ReadIris OCR engine.
One nifty feature to note: The menus have a setting that changes the viewing angle of the control panel LCD to make it more visible when you're standing or sitting. However, some of the PCs we used for testing couldn't boot when the PSC 2175 was already turned on. HP says this is a "known issue" that it plans to fix with a software patch.
UPSHOT: The PSC 2175 is a good choice for shutterbugs who want to print attractive photos and don't need a fax machine.

HP PSC 2510 integrates photo-quality printing, faxing, scanning, and copying into one seamless and easy-to-use device.
HP 2510 includes wireless 802.11b capabilities, an Ethernet jack, and full standalone fax capabilities right out of the box. HP PhotoSmart 7760 Thermal Inkjet Printer offers high performance direct photo printing in up to 6-ink color or up to 4800-optimized dpi.
HP PhotoSmart 7760 uses a proprietary setup routine to install drivers and other software. Put in the CD and it takes care of almost everything automatically, stopping at one point to ask you to connect the USB cable. It then finds the inkjet printer, finishes the installation, and offers to print a test page.
HP PhotoSmart 7760 can use four different ink cartridges, but only two can be loaded at a time. The three-color ink cartridge always stays in the inkjet printer; but depending on whether you're printing ordinary black text, color photos, or gray-scale photos, you'll use a different ink cartridge in the second well.
You also get HP Memories Disc Creator, for producing photo albums on CD, and HP Photo Printing, which provides basic photo tune-up features such as sharpening and color correction with HP PhotoSmart 7760.
