Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The HP PhotoSmart 7150 color inkjet printer offers true-to-life photo-quality results with up to 4,800 x 1,200 optimized color dpi (using premium photo paper, and with 1,200 x 1,200 input dpi when printing from your computer). Print fast, laser-quality black text at up to 14 ppm with the optional HP 56 black inkjet print cartridge, or 9 ppm black and 10 ppm color with the included ink cartridges. HP 7150 easily connects to your digital camera via the front USB port for direct printing, and to your PC or Mac via the rear USB port.
With PhotoREt IV technology, printing photos is faster and easier than traditional high dpi printing, and because it uses less ink, it saves money in the long run. However, the printer has an optional optimized 4,800 dpi mode. This versatile printer includes a range of smart and helpful features, including HP's award-winning optical paper sensor and optional automatic two-sided printing accessory. A low ink indicator and job cancel button mean ink consumption can be monitored and unwanted jobs stopped to save paper and ink.

WHAT'S HOT: The Photosmart 7150, at only $149, is the least expensive photo printer PC World tested for our January 2003 review. It uses six inks, and as we've seen from other six-ink models, its photos showed great detail and color, though HP's more expensive Photosmart 7550 produced better shading and texture. On the other hand, the 7150 delivered better text--black, clean, and very attractive.
WHAT'S NOT: The 7150 is painfully slow, squeezing out text documents at only 1.8 pages per minute--the slowest of all the printers we reviewed for our roundup. Its black and color ink cartridges run a pricey $35.
Also, like the Photosmart 7550, the 7150 has three ink cartridges--but only two can be installed together, so when you switch between photos and text documents you have to swap cartridges.
WHAT ELSE: The 7150 has a USB port on the front for connecting to an HP digital camera with direct-printing capability, such as the HP Photosmart 320; however, because the 7150 has no on-board control panel for managing jobs, that's the only way you can print without a PC. For paper-conserving types, HP's optional $80 duplexer pops into the back.
UPSHOT: If a bargain price is your determining factor in selecting a photo printer, the Photosmart 7150 is a good choice.
