Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

There's one big difference between the HP Deskjet 6840 Color Inkjet Printer and almost every other personal ink jet on the planet: Built-in networking with both an Ethernet port and 802.11g if you want to go wireless. This alone makes the 6840 viable to anyone who has a home network or is looking for a personal printer to use in the office. There's also a USB 2.0 port if you want to connect the old fashioned way, and even a PictBridge connector for cameras.
For our tests, we used the Ethernet connection. HP's slick setup routine, which takes care of virtually all the setup steps automatically, should make installation go smoothly even for a home user without an IT department to fall back on.
The 6840 isn't the fastest ink jet we've tested, but it's close. Bragging rights still go to the Canon Pixma iP3000 and current Editors' Choice iP4000, both with total times on our business applications suite of 15 minutes 48 seconds. The 6840 is virtually tied for business applications, at 15:57 total. However, it falls behind the Canon printers for photos, at an average of 1:49 for each 4-by-6 (compared with about 1:05 for the Canon printers) and 4:19 for each 8-by-10 (compared with about 2:35).
Output quality is also a touch behind the Canon Pixma iP4000. The 6840 scored a good rating for text, with most fonts readable at 5 points or below but two highly stylized fonts requiring 12 points. Graphics were very good, with only minor flaws. Photos were at the high end of good but suffered from some minor posterization. By comparison, the iP4000 scored slightly better for text, slightly worse for graphics, and significantly better for photos.
One potential annoyance with the 6840 is that for best-looking output, you should change between black, color photo, and photo gray inks to match your output. That said, we found you can get nearly as good results by leaving the black cartridge in at all times, which makes this a minor concern at most. And the 6840 more than makes up for that with its combination of speed, quality, and, most of all, its network connections.
