The compact HP PSC 1315 has one of the cleanest and most well-designed front panels we've seen on an inkjet MFP. Instead of presenting myriad buttons across the panel, as most MFPs do, this model has eight multicolored buttons in a neat line on the left side of the machine. Using just those buttons, you can scan, copy, print onto plain or photo paper, and adjust a print to fit the paper size in the input tray. For digital camera owners, a PictBridge port is conveniently located on the front panel. One minor annoyance: The PSC 1315 we tested made loud clunking sounds when it geared up and started to print.
Though we were impressed with the PSC 1315's design and its reasonable price, we were not taken with its performance. At 0.5 ppm, it was by far the slowest at copying a text document; every other inkjet MFP we tested copied the same document at 2.0 to 3.6 ppm. Using a PC, text printed at 4.6 ppm, slightly slower than the inkjets' average of 5.3 ppm; color graphics printed at a slightly below-average 1.0 ppm.
The PSC 1315 did, however, deliver impressive print quality. Text looked sharp, and photographs showed realistic colors and excellent details. In each test the PSC 1315 earned a score of Very Good; only one other MFP we tested, the Canon Multipass MP390, received this high a score for its glossy photos. Our only quibble with the PSC 1315's test photos is that they looked as if they had been sharpened too much; some unduly hard edges drew attention to themselves. Prints of color graphics on plain paper retained good detail and handled most colors well, but blues looked garish. Copies of a text document, on the other hand, looked too light, meriting a score of only Fair; all other inkjet MFPs earned higher scores on this test.
In addition to having a fairly full-featured driver, the PSC 1315 comes with HP's Image Zone software, which lets you upload images from a camera to your PC, save them in a Windows Explorer-style folder system, and organize them by album or project. However, simply installing the driver and bundled software took a significantly long time. You get a warning that the installation could take up to 30 minutes, and the warning proved accurate; the software of other models we tested in the group took less than half that time.
Upshot: The well-designed and reasonably priced HP PSC 1315 is best suited for people whose highest priority is print quality--and who don't mind waiting for their prints.
