Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
Slowly, step by technological step, printouts of digital photographs are approaching the quality and longevity of film prints. Epson's $299 Stylus Photo 875DC six-color ink jet printer provides the latest nudge in that direction, with a top resolution of 1440 by 720 dpi.
The company estimates that a single 8-by-10-inch print in 1440 Photo Mode will cost about $1.25. An optional $39 adapter lets you produce 4-by-6-inch prints edge to edge (without borders); a 50-print roll of the paper costs about $20. If you use removable-storage PC Cards with your digital camera, you'll appreciate the printer's built-in reader.
What's hot: Epson's printer ink and paper technologies create high-quality, long-lasting prints.
What's not: Potentially high cost per print in high-resolution 1440 Photo Mode.

Epson Stylus C66 Street Price: $43.00 - $98.00
PCMAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
If you care about output quality more than anything else and you're on a tight budget for purchase price, the Epson Stylus C66 ($70 street) may well be your printer of choice. It offers among the best overall output quality of any ink jet, period.
Epson also claims that many users print their photos on plain paper, and that the DuraBrite inks provide sufficient image quality to make those photos acceptable. While the output on plain paper is reasonably good, it is certainly no match for the output on Epson's own photo paper, and it's no better than plain-paper output for any number of other ink jets.
Performance on our tests (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing, marginal, with a total time on our business applications suite of 54 minutes 24 seconds. Photos took a disappointingly long average of 4:37 for 4-by-6 photos and 10:30 for 8-by-10s. Cost per page is also a potential issue, at 7.3 cents per monochrome page and 13.4 cents per color page on our tests.
But if you print relatively few pages, and therefore don't have to worry too much about cost per page or speed, the output quality and low initial price make the C66 an attractive choice.

Note: A USB cable is not included with the Epson PictureMate Express.
What's in the Box
PictureMate Express Edition, paper and cartridge for 20 4" x 6" photos, power supply, quick start booklet and software CD.
Epson PictureMate Express Printer Street Price: $119.99-$156.00
CNET.com Editors' review:
Though express may be overstating the case, Epson's update to the original PictureMate can't help but be faster than its incredibly sluggish predecessor. Despite the PictureMate Express's extra kick, however, Epson's claimed speed of 80 seconds for a 4x6-inch print indicates that it will probably still lag behind other standalone snapshot printers--and keep in mind that printers rarely meet their claimed speeds. Epson plans to keep the earlier version on the market, albeit at a reduced price, and will drop the price of the recently released PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition, as well. Furthermore, a new 270-sheet PictureMate Print Pack translates into a drop in per-print cost, though its $65 price tag may send you into sticker shock. Aside from the speed bump, the Express is identical to the original; it will cost $149 when it ships this month.

Epson R340 Street Price: $176.99 - $242.00
PCMAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
All those familiar with the Epson Stylus Photo R220 need to know about the Epson Stylus Photo R340 printer ($200 street) is that it's effectively the same printer gussied up with photo-related features and costs twice as much. Print speed and output quality are nearly identical, and both let you print directly on a printable optical disc, so you don't need paste-on labels. More importantly, both are best used as second printers primarily for photos. They can function as single, all-purpose home printers, but only if you don't mind waiting for output.
The additional features in the Epson Stylus Photo R340 include direct printing from PictBridge cameras and memory cards, assisted by a front-panel menu and 2.4-inch LCD to let you preview your photos. Epson also added a port for plugging in USB storage devices including thumb drives, ZIP drives, and CD and DVD burners and drives. You can use any of these for direct printing and (except for CD and DVD drives) for saving images from a camera memory card so you can make room on the card for more photos.
The Epson R340 is slightly larger than the Epson R220, at 8.6 by 19.6 by 10.4 inches (HWD), but is essentially an R220 clone. To set up the printer, you insert the six ink cartridges—cyan, yellow, magenta, black, light-cyan, and light-magenta—load paper, run the automated installation routine, and plug in the USB cable. Input capacity is the same for both printers too, at 120 sheets—but what is acceptable paper capacity in a $100 printer feels skimpy at $200.
Much the same can be said about performance. Although the two printers handed in similar times on our test suites the Epson R340 printer earned a lower performance rating overall, because it's a more expensive printer. Its total time on our business applications suite was 28 minutes 16 seconds; the R220's was 27:45. The two printers were within a few seconds of each other on each individual test. By comparison, the Editors' Choice HP Photosmart 8250 printer's total time was just 15:01.
On our photo-printing tests, the Epson R340 printer averaged 2 minutes for each 4-by-6 photo and 4:06 for 8-by-10s, essentially tying the R220. The 8250 averaged 1:07 for 4-by-6s and 2:46 for 8-by-10s.
The R340's output quality was good for text and graphics, and very good for photos. But these ratings are lower overall than those of the Photosmart 8250. The text rating is also slightly lower than what the R220 earned, but the text output for the R220 and R340 is very similar.
More than half the test fonts for both printers were easily readable at 5 points, with some readable at 4 and none needing more than 12. With the R340, however, fewer fonts were readable at 4 points, a difference that's small enough to be a matter of variation between individual printers. In any case, unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, the text should be good enough for anything you're likely to print.
Graphics showed only minor flaws, including banding in one image in default mode and a tendency to lose thin lines. The output is certainly good enough for internal business use, and marginally good enough to give a client when you need to project a professional image.
Most photos qualified as true photo quality, making them good enough for albums and framing. But on a few test photos some of the colors had a muddy look, and our monochrome photo showed tints of varying colors at different gray levels. If you don't need to print monochrome photos, this obviously won't be a problem. One small plus is that the photos are fully waterproof from the moment they come out of the printer. Touching them with moist hands won't ruin them.
The combination of output quality, photo-related features, waterproof output, and the ability to print on printable optical discs makes the R340 worth considering. But be sure to take a look at the HP Photosmart 8250, as it has somewhat better-looking output and much faster speed.

The Epson Stylus Photo 1270 is optimized for photo printing. The Epson 1270 prints with six colors, adding light cyan and light magenta to the standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. The Epson 1270 is reasonable choice for all-purpose printing.
If you have a USB connection, setup is identical for it: Connect the cable, then install the ink cartridges and driver.
The 1270 is a tabloid-size version of the 870. Targeted at professional graphic artists and photographers, it ships with Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE. In addition, the company offers a special discount on the purchase of MonacoEZcolor, which lets you calibrate a printer and scanner to a monitor.
