WHAT'S HOT: The $129 Epson's print quality isn't bad for such an inexpensive model, and neither is its graphics performance, at 0.7 pages per minute. The Stylus Color 440 comes with good documentation and is easy to set up and use.
WHAT'S NOT: Text printing speed could be better. At 2 pages per minute, the 440 is as slow as our other slow-poke, the Canon BJC-2000, but costs $30 more. Same story on the 440's performance: Two pages per minute for text isn't bad, but it's hardly inspiring.
WHAT ELSE: The 440 feels somewhat sturdier than most printers in this price range, which is no surprise thanks to a heavy, double-layer output tray and an underlying steel frame.
BEST USE: Definitely for kids. With its low price, easy setup, and fun software bundle, the 440 would work well for families that don't need top speeds or the best output quality.

Big brother to the Epson Stylus C66, the Epson Stylus C86 ($100 street) offers the same level of output quality, which is among the best for any ink jet at any price. In addition, it throws in reasonable speed and relatively low running costs.
Like the C66, the C86 uses Epson's DuraBrite inks, with a separate cartridge for each color. Epson likes to stress that these inks are water-, smudge-, and light-resistant. We found the water and smudge resistance less robust immediately after printing than after several days of drying. Epson also boasts that many users print their photos on plain paper with the DuraBrite inks. This may be so, but the photos aren't noticeably better than plain-paper output from most other ink jets. And they certainly don't look as good as those printed on Epson's own photo paper.
Output quality overall is surprisingly good. The C86 earns an excellent rating for text. Most of our test fonts are easily readable at 4 points, and none—including highly stylized, difficult-to-print fonts—need larger than 8 points. Photos fall just short of excellent, and graphics are just under very good. The key issues for graphics are visible banding in default mode and a tendency for paper with a lot of ink to curl: In some cases, a piece of paper left sitting on a desk curled all the way up into a scroll.
Performance is best described as well into the tolerable range, but not anywhere near the top tier. The total time on our business applications suite was 23 minutes 10 seconds. That's a lot faster than the C66's 54:24, but nowhere near the 15:48 for the $100 Canon Pixma iP3000. Photos took a similarly acceptable but lackluster average of 2:52 for 4-by-6s and 6:25 for 8-by-10s.
Cost per page is a bright spot. Unlike the C66, the C86 can use high-capacity cartridges for more pages per cartridge and a lower cost per page. On our tests, the C86 proved to be one of the less expensive ink jets to run, at 4.2 cents per monochrome page and 11 cents per color page.
This combination of great-looking output, a relatively low cost per page, and acceptable speeds makes the C86 an attractive choice.

The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 ($1,800 street) is far and away the best, fastest, most versatile printer in its class, capable of producing superb exhibition-quality photo prints, graphics arts proofs, posters, and just about any other output one could possibly want. With a 17-inch-wide carriage, the printer will barely fit on your desk, but who wouldn't sacrifice desktop real estate for this gem?
At 14 by 33 by 30 inches and 83.7 pounds, the Stylus Pro 4000 is an intelligently designed, rock-solid device that can output over 20,000 8.5- by 14-inch prints—more than two years of 24/7 operation—before requiring factory servicing, which is as robust as its closest competitors, the Canon imagePrograf W2200 and the HP DesignJet 120nr, and head-and-shoulders above lower-end printers. Although large and boxy, the unit allows for easy, unimpeded access to the print engine, ink cartridges, and paper paths. Although not true continuous-tone output, the dispersion pattern is so tight that discerning individual dots with the naked eye is impossible. It uses the same seven-color, high-capacity, waterproof UltraChrome ink cartridges as the Epson 7600 and 9600 pro printers but accommodates eight rather than seven cartridges, permitting the Stylus Pro 4000 to switch between photo black and matte black automatically, rather than requiring you to replace the black manually to match the type output.

Photo Printer Does Discs, Too
The R300's included Epson CD Print applet is markedly improved from its predecessor, offering greater flexibility in design without becoming overly complex. Text handling is awkward, though. For example, you can't directly change text sizes or colors; you have to enter a separate dialog box. And you can't create multiple lines of circular text. But adding and positioning background images is easy, and if all you want to do is create a label that describes the content on the disc, this applet will do quite nicely.
Less impressive was the printer's disc handling. It's easy enough to mount a disc on the included tray, which you then insert halfway into the front-accessible slot. But the loading mechanism proved finicky. I frequently had to remove and reload the tray, then reset the printer's Maintenance button.
This annoyance aside, I found myself enjoying the process more and more with each disc label I created. Creating a full-disc label with a 3-megapixel digital image as the background took just over 3 minutes--a reasonably short enough time that I didn't begin to feel antsy.
Not Quite Label Magic
The Print CD applet from Epson is quite usable, but it can only design the label that goes on the disc. Sadly, there's more than this to labeling: You need accompanying inserts for the CD or DVD jewel case, too. So as good as the Epson applet is, you'll still need to look elsewhere for help completing your labeling job.
I didn't get a full-blown copy of SureThing's latest kit in time for this review. But Roxio's Label Creator, which is included in Easy Media Creator 7, represents a vast improvement over previous labeling components included in earlier iterations of the company's software. I still wish certain things were easier to do, and it took a little fooling around to get the hang of the interface, but I found much to like.
Another neat feature: The software can auto-populate labels based on what it deems "Smart Content," picking up certain information stored on the disc itself, such as track lists for Audio CDs, the disc's title and contents, the number of files, and more. This is particularly handy for quick-and-dirty labeling. It's not pain-free or seamless yet, but it's a step in the right direction.
Printing on the Epson R300 is easy--you just click the Print to Disc check box in the printer dialog box, and the label is printed accordingly.
Special Media Required
Of course, to use the Epson R300 printer, you'll need printable media, offered by Verbatim and other manufacturers, that has a specially coated layer designed for absorbing printer inks. I used Verbatim media for my tests and was generally satisfied with the results--although I did see some patterning in the full-disc image, which was due to the disc's surface coating.
Another caveat: The image was easily smudged when it came into contact with water, even after drying for more than 15 hours.
I already have a perfectly good ink jet photo printer, but I'm wondering whether the R300--glitches and all--is just the excuse I need to upgrade.
