WHAT'S HOT: The Stylus C60's blazing graphics speed (1.4 ppm) tops that of all other recent ink jets except its bigger sibling, the Stylus C80, and it prints text at the rapid clip of 5.6 ppm--an impressive rate for a $99 machine. We also liked its subtly detailed, glossy photos.
WHAT'S NOT: Most of the C60's print results didn't wow us: Text was marked with hatching along the edges and exhibited a slight waver or wiggle; narrow parallel lines printed with a patchwork pattern. Gray-scale images looked grainy and lacked shading; and even color graphics failed to capture detail and texture.
WHAT ELSE: Color ink costs run high at 15 cents per page.
UPSHOT: The C60 won't win converts for most forms of output, but it works well as a penny-pincher's photo printer.

The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 ($1,800 street) is far and away the best, fastest, most versatile printer in its class, capable of producing superb exhibition-quality photo prints, graphics arts proofs, posters, and just about any other output one could possibly want. With a 17-inch-wide carriage, the printer will barely fit on your desk, but who wouldn't sacrifice desktop real estate for this gem?
At 14 by 33 by 30 inches and 83.7 pounds, the Stylus Pro 4000 is an intelligently designed, rock-solid device that can output over 20,000 8.5- by 14-inch prints—more than two years of 24/7 operation—before requiring factory servicing, which is as robust as its closest competitors, the Canon imagePrograf W2200 and the HP DesignJet 120nr, and head-and-shoulders above lower-end printers. Although large and boxy, the unit allows for easy, unimpeded access to the print engine, ink cartridges, and paper paths. The printer is designed for maximum workflow and is both fast and quiet. A full-bleed 16- by 20-inch color photo takes approximately 10 minutes 30 seconds, twice as fast as the Epson Stylus Pro 7600. The cost for ink and paper is about the same.
Image quality is outstanding, with a very wide color gamut, great detail, true blacks, and excellent, accurate color. The level of archivability (a print's ability to retain its image) and colorfastness (the print's resistance to light) are quite high: Wilhelm Imaging Research rates the colorfastness of the Stylus Pro 4000's new media at 85 years for color and more than 100 years for black-and-white.
As a result of Epson's famed reputation for producing long-lasting and high-quality documents, graphics and photographs printed from the Stylus Pro 7600 and 9600 are often sold as works of art. The Stylus Pro 4000's output is even better and sets a new standard for professional graphics printing.

Versatile and intriguing, the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer is sibling on opposite ends of the spectrum. The wide-format 1280 is clearly for prosumers.
The 1280 is a wide-format printer: It can create prints with up to 2,880 by 720 dpi and borderless prints up to 13-by-44 for banners. Physically, it looks nothing like the 785EPX; instead, it resembles an old dot-matrix printer (flat and wide), and it lacks memory slots for media cards.
Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer scored in the middle of the pack on our photo performance tests. We noticed output problems on our high-quality photo test: Thin white lines seemed lost against a black background, possibly the result of overeager edge enhancement technology. This printer had decent output speeds on both our graphics and photo tests.

Big brother to the Epson Stylus C66, the Epson Stylus C86 ($100 street) offers the same level of output quality, which is among the best for any ink jet at any price. In addition, it throws in reasonable speed and relatively low running costs.
Like the C66, the C86 uses Epson's DuraBrite inks, with a separate cartridge for each color. Epson likes to stress that these inks are water-, smudge-, and light-resistant. We found the water and smudge resistance less robust immediately after printing than after several days of drying. Epson also boasts that many users print their photos on plain paper with the DuraBrite inks. This may be so, but the photos aren't noticeably better than plain-paper output from most other ink jets. And they certainly don't look as good as those printed on Epson's own photo paper.
Output quality overall is surprisingly good. The C86 earns an excellent rating for text. Most of our test fonts are easily readable at 4 points, and none—including highly stylized, difficult-to-print fonts—need larger than 8 points. Photos fall just short of excellent, and graphics are just under very good. The key issues for graphics are visible banding in default mode and a tendency for paper with a lot of ink to curl: In some cases, a piece of paper left sitting on a desk curled all the way up into a scroll.
Performance is best described as well into the tolerable range, but not anywhere near the top tier. The total time on our business applications suite was 23 minutes 10 seconds. That's a lot faster than the C66's 54:24, but nowhere near the 15:48 for the $100 Canon Pixma iP3000.Photos took a similarly acceptable but lackluster average of 2:52 for 4-by-6s and 6:25 for 8-by-10s.
Cost per page is a bright spot. Unlike the C66, the C86 can use high-capacity cartridges for more pages per cartridge and a lower cost per page. On our tests, the C86 proved to be one of the less expensive ink jets to run, at 4.2 cents per monochrome page and 11 cents per color page.
This combination of great-looking output, a relatively low cost per page, and acceptable speeds makes the C86 an attractive choice.

The Epson Stylus Photo R320 ($200 street) fills a gap in the Epson line between the R200 and the R800. Like both of those models, the R320 is a photo printer that can print on printable CDs and DVDs. Its performance is on a par with the R200's for both business applications and photos, but on output quality it comes close to matching the R800, even beating it for text quality.
The R320 looks much like the R200 and R800, with a rounded front and a gray and silver design. Unlike the R200, it offers card slots—for seven memory card formats—and a USB port in front where you can plug in a PictBridge camera, storage devices like USB keys and Zip drives, or an optional Bluetooth adapter ($70 street). You can also save photos from a memory card to a storage device plugged into the port. Built-in menus give you a reasonable amount of control over direct printing—allowing you, for example, to crop your photos and adjust contrast and brightness—but not quite as much as the HP Photosmart 8150 and 8450.
Output quality is at the high end for an ink jet. Text rates as very good, falling short of excellent primarily because of a slightly gray look. Graphics quality is just short of very good because of a tendency for pages with too much coverage to curl. Photos are just shy of excellent, flawed only by a brownish tint in monochrome output.
Performance is reasonably good for photos. The total times on our photo suite—5:58 for three 4-by-6s and 12:21 for three 8-by-10s—essentially tie the R200's and beat all but the speediest of the photo printers, notably the Canon i9900. For business applications, the R320 was on the slow side but still in the tolerable range, with a total time of 28:49.
Count the R320 as a more than reasonable choice for the price, especially if you want to take advantage of its ability to print on optical discs.

The Stylus Photo R800 adds red and blue inks to the standard set of cyan, magenta, and yellow inks; but it omits light photo cyan and light photo magenta. Other cartridges supply photo black, matte black (for text), and a gloss overcoat. The matte black helped the R800 produce text that looked bold yet clean even at small sizes. While gray-scale photos exhibited punch that other printers' output lacked, they also displayed precise detail and realistic shading.
Like other Epson inkjets, the R800 made a mess of narrow parallel lines. And when we tried to print our CMYK-format test photo with this model, we ran into the same problem that we did with Epson's Stylus Photo R200: The photo sometimes printed too dark and appeared severely underexposed. Even when it did print correctly, the image was a little duller than when output from other printers we tested. (CMYK is not typically used with PC printers, but most of our test models handled it without difficulty). Images printed on the R800 in the more-common RGB format looked gorgeous, with realistic textures, sharp detail, and strong, rich colors.
The printer applies its gloss overcoat to photos in areas with light-colored ink to prevent dull patches. Epson's driver allows you to turn the gloss cartridge on or off; PC World's panel of judges could detect no difference in quality between prints that used the overcoat and those that did not. Epson says that prints made with the R800's pigment-based color inks won't fade for 80 years if placed behind glass.
Based on tests conducted by the Rochester Institute of Technology for PC World, black ink pages cost 2.8 cents each, and pages of black plus the three standard colors (not photos) cost 11.1 cents each; both figures are somewhat lower than the average for recently tested photo printers.
The R800 doesn't win any medals for speed: Text pages emerge at 2.1 ppm, a hair faster than the slowest rate we've seen lately, and photos take a more ordinary 0.4 ppm.
The R800 can print on rolls of photo paper either 4 inches or 8.3 inches wide. The printer has a button that pushes finished photos out to be cut off, and then retracts the excess paper to avoid waste. You don't have to remove paper from the main tray before feeding in a roll--an improvement on Epson's previous roll-printing models. The R800 carries a tray for feeding a CD or DVD through the paper path, and it provides a bare-bones utility for designing labels. One minor inconvenience: To print on a CD or DVD, you must reposition the output tray. The R800 doesn't have a control panel or a direct-to-camera port, but it does provide USB 2.0 and six-pin FireWire ports.
UPSHOT: If you plan on printing a lot of snapshots, you'll appreciate the R800's roll feeder; and as long as you stick with RGB files, the R800 will reward you with great-looking photo prints.

WHAT'S HOT: The Stylus C62 demonstrates impressive print speed considering its modest $99 price. Lexmark's Z55se Color Jetprinter and Canon's I850 Photo Printer beat its text speed of 6.2 pages per minute--but both cost more. The C62's 1.6-ppm speed for printing graphics is the fastest time of all the general-purpose printers we tested.
Our print-quality jury liked the C62's glossy photo prints, which looked detailed and realistic. Epson provides a clear set-up poster, a good manual for using the printer, a detailed on-screen reference guide, and some on-screen animations that show how to maintain the unit. In addition, as you choose settings in the driver, you can open a window that displays a summary of all the settings you've selected.
WHAT'S NOT: Though the C62 costs only $99, you'll pay a lot to keep it running: Black ink costs approximately 7.1 cents per page of text. And color ink runs 17.1 cents for a page of graphics. Color and black cartridges are $30 each.
The C62's prints--except for photos--don't look great. Text appeared slightly grayish and rough around the edges; in our line tests, narrow parallel lines overlapped to give the appearance of wide stripes; and color graphics looked dotted.
WHAT ELSE: Epson's one-year warranty is reasonable--longer than some competitors' warranties. The C62 installed painlessly, with each step going exactly as the instructions said it would.
UPSHOT: The Stylus C62 provides zippy printing for an affordable price, but home users might be wary of its steep ink prices and mediocre text quality.
