Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
Photo Printer Does Discs, Too
The R300's included Epson CD Print applet is markedly improved from its predecessor, offering greater flexibility in design without becoming overly complex. Text handling is awkward, though. For example, you can't directly change text sizes or colors; you have to enter a separate dialog box. And you can't create multiple lines of circular text. But adding and positioning background images is easy, and if all you want to do is create a label that describes the content on the disc, this applet will do quite nicely.
I was impressed by how well the software and the printer worked together by default: When I examined the label I printed on Verbatim Printable DVD-R media, the background image's alignment was within a millimeter or two of what I designed on screen--and I didn't have to futz with calibration settings (a frequent hassle when dealing with adhesive labels).
Less impressive was the printer's disc handling. It's easy enough to mount a disc on the included tray, which you then insert halfway into the front-accessible slot. But the loading mechanism proved finicky. I frequently had to remove and reload the tray, then reset the printer's Maintenance button.
This annoyance aside, I found myself enjoying the process more and more with each disc label I created. Creating a full-disc label with a 3-megapixel digital image as the background took just over 3 minutes--a reasonably short enough time that I didn't begin to feel antsy.
The printed output on discs was smooth, and dried quickly. The end result was eye-catching, too. I'm sold on the idea of creating labels that use background pictures to help describe a disc's content--for example, an image of a gymnast for a gymnastics competition recorded from TV, or a vacation photo for a disc containing digital images from a trip.
Not Quite Label Magic
The Print CD applet from Epson is quite usable, but it can only design the label that goes on the disc. Sadly, there's more than this to labeling: You need accompanying inserts for the CD or DVD jewel case, too. So as good as the Epson applet is, you'll still need to look elsewhere for help completing your labeling job.
As of this writing, only two third-party labeling packages--Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 ($85) and SureThing CD Labeler ($30)--support Epson's R300 and its sibling, the R200. Epson says other popular disc burning packages, including Ahead Software's Nero 6 Ultra Edition (our recent Best Buy in an April 2004 burning software roundup), will eventually support these printers' direct-to-disc printing capabilities.
I didn't get a full-blown copy of SureThing's latest kit in time for this review. But Roxio's Label Creator, which is included in Easy Media Creator 7, represents a vast improvement over previous labeling components included in earlier iterations of the company's software. I still wish certain things were easier to do, and it took a little fooling around to get the hang of the interface, but I found much to like.
For one thing, Label Creator has integrated label layouts, so if you populate data on the disc label, it transfers to a corresponding text field in the jewel case insert and booklet layouts, too--assuming you've gone through the complicated process of selecting the layouts you want to create before beginning your label.
Another neat feature: The software can auto-populate labels based on what it deems "Smart Content," picking up certain information stored on the disc itself, such as track lists for Audio CDs, the disc's title and contents, the number of files, and more. This is particularly handy for quick-and-dirty labeling. It's not pain-free or seamless yet, but it's a step in the right direction.
Printing on the Epson R300 is easy--you just click the Print to Disc check box in the printer dialog box, and the label is printed accordingly.
Special Media Required
Of course, to use the Epson R300 printer, you'll need printable media, offered by Verbatim and other manufacturers, that has a specially coated layer designed for absorbing printer inks. I used Verbatim media for my tests and was generally satisfied with the results--although I did see some patterning in the full-disc image, which was due to the disc's surface coating.
Another caveat: The image was easily smudged when it came into contact with water, even after drying for more than 15 hours. This could pose a challenge if you use a cleaning solution to remove dust or dirt from the underside of a disc: You'll have to be careful none of the solution comes into contact with the labeled side. And though things went smoothly for me, I have heard anecdotal reports of slow drying times, smudging, and ink bubbling with some discs.
You can't always find printable media on store shelves, but you can order it online. Surprisingly, pricing is only minimally higher than it is for standard media. For example, average prices run about $35 for a 25-disc spindle of printable DVD media, and $45 for a 100-disc spindle of CD-Rs. That's about what you'd pay for regular discs.
The Epson R300 may not be the ultimate solution for disc labeling, but it does offer an attractive alternative to adhesive labels. It comes closer to hitting the mark than most options currently on the market--especially when paired with Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7 software.
I already have a perfectly good ink jet photo printer, but I'm wondering whether the R300--glitches and all--is just the excuse I need to upgrade.

Detailed Specs (Epson 670):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Color 670 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
The Epson Stylus Color 670 is an ideal printer for the family or small office wanting fast, quality printing at a low price. It's unpretentious and easy-to-use, with convenient features to create splashy school reports, family projects, or office presentations. With a resolution of 1,440 x 720 dpi and a full range of software tools, the 670 delivers photo-quality color in practically no time. Plus, it's compatible with both PC and Macintosh.
The Epson 670 is designed for fast setup and use. It weighs in at only 15 pounds and has an impressively simple design, with a drop output tray and a snap-on input tray that holds up to 50 pages. First, we dropped in the two ink cartridges and waited the brief two minutes for the 670 to warm up. During setup, we noticed that the printer was a little noisy, but we also noticed there were handy color graphic instructions for replacing ink cartridges inside the lid. With one-button operation, we were able to begin printing without going through a long tutorial. Installing software was intuitive, and Epson's setup guide was highly detailed for clarity and effortless use. (And be sure not to miss the strange and eerie Fix-it Flix printer movies included on the CD-ROM.) More experienced printer owners should only need to take only a cursory glance at the set-up guide.
For all of its simplicity, the Epson 670 still performed well in our tests. We were able to print a variety of color and black-and-white text and graphic pages whose quality was very good for a printer in this price range.
Epson's PerfectPicture Imaging System is a combination of features that includes tiny ink jets, smooth AccuPhoto Halftoning, and quick-drying inks to produce rich, stable color. Flexible printing on a variety of papers and envelopes permits greater creativity in developing invitations, resumes, banners, and labels--and photo enhancement allows you to nuance tone, detail, and sharpness. Individual indicator lights let you know when ink cartridges are low. The software included with the 670 includes ArcSoft PhotoImpression 2000, Epson Software Film Factory, Trellix Web, and Stamps.com (for Windows). In-the-box accessories include a USB cable, black and color ink cartridges, and the Epson Printer Basics Guide. For support, Epson offers a highly navigable Web site and a one-year exchange-or-repair warranty.
Pros:
- Lightweight and compact
- Clear, clean black text and quality color printing
- Very easy to set up and use
- Extensive documentation
Cons:
- Noisy operation

The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

CNET.com Editors' review:
Epson has announced the Stylus CX5400, a multifunction printer that offers photo-quality printing, along with basic scanning and copying capabilities. It replaces the Epson Stylus CX5200. The CX5400 is rated at 22 pages per minute (ppm) for printing monochrome pages and 11ppm for printing color pages.
Upside: The CX5400 includes Epson's Easy PhotoFix technology--a combination of hardware and software that's designed to restore old, discolored, or faded photographs at the touch of a button. The scanner can also export images directly to e-mail. Finally, the CX5400 works with both Windows 98 and greater and Macintosh OS X, exhibiting a versatility that's becoming rarer these days.
Downside: The LCD on the front panel is a small, single-line display that's hard to read. Fortunately, the printer, scanner, and copy functions can all be controlled by the Windows and OS X software.
Outlook: At $149, this affordable multifunction printer contains very competitive features for Windows and Mac users alike. Check back for our review.

PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
The Epson Stylus Photo 1270 is optimized for photo printing. The Epson 1270 prints with six colors, adding light cyan and light magenta to the standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. The Epson 1270 is reasonable choice for all-purpose printing.
If you have a USB connection, setup is identical for it: Connect the cable, then install the ink cartridges and driver.

The UltraChrome inks are formulated to resist water and light damage and to ensure longevity, all while providing more colors than any other pigment ink on the market.
A maximum resolution of 2,880 x 1,440 dpi (both color and black and white) results in amazingly accurate prints. The 4-picoliter droplets are the equivalent of 2-picoliter droplets in ordinary dye-base systems, resulting in ultrafine detail and clarity. Interchangeable standard and matte black ink cartridges help you get the best quality from black-and-white prints, while the included Film Factory(TM) with PRINT Image Matching Support software ensures that prints from compatible digital cameras are true to the original image.

Detailed Specs (Epson 760, C298001):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Color 760 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
The Epson Stylus Color 760 is ideal for small offices with big ideas. Your presentations, reports, newsletters, and digital photos will grab your audience with 1,440 dpi Photo Quality color images and crisp, laser-sharp black text.
With up to 7 ppm black and 6 ppm color print speeds, the ultrasmall 4 picoliter ink droplets will bring to life whatever you're printing--on all types of paper and transparent media. Whether you're running a PC or Macintosh, your work will shine, courtesy of the printer's Epson Perfect
Picture Imaging System, which features Micro Piezo ink-jet technology, smooth AcuPhoto halftoning, and quick-drying inks that won't bleed or smudge.
The software package you'll get with the Epson Stylus Color 760 includes eFax, for easy retrieval of your faxes via e-mail, plus big-office photo editing from Polaroid PhotoMAX Pro and Arcsoft PhotoPrinter SE. You can even send away for additional popular titles, including Corel Ventura, Rand-McNally Route Planner, and Jack Nicklaus Golf.
The Epson Stylus Color 760 connects to a Macintosh computer using its built-in USB port or to a Windows PC using the USB port or standard parallel port. In addition, you can share the printer on an Ethernet network using the Axis 1440 print server (available as an option through Epson Accessories), specially designed for Epson printers.
From Winmag
There's no question that you will appreciate Epson's new Stylus Color 760 and Stylus Color 860--both are quieter than previous models--a welcome change. Still, for those looking for little or no interruption in a workspace's peace and quiet, the HP DeskJet 970 Cse on our WinList wins by a mile.
I connected each printer via the USB port (parallel port connection is also provided) after I found a cable--it's not supplied. Set up was relatively painless (the only pain was due to a Windows 98 anomaly) and within minutes a test page emerged, clear and crisp.
Printing on plain paper with the 760, at the default speed setting, our twenty-page test document tested out at 4 pages per minute, slower than the 7 ppm maximum touted by the manufacturer. Characters were black with some artifacts due to the inexpensive paper. When printed on higher grade paper, output was almost laser quality. But timing significantly changed when I printed the same document at the highest quality setting--1.2 ppm, or sixteen minutes and twenty seconds. The trade off: Output was excellent.
A three-page mixed text and graphics document was produced at 3 ppm, with good color reproduction and the same clear, sharp text.
Printing a full page graphic on glossy paper took almost eleven minutes and the colors showed rich reds, bright yellows, and deep blues along with good shadow quality. Four by six digital camera photos printed in less than a minute and were good enough to share.
The Stylus Color 860 is faster, printing the twenty-page test document at 5.3 ppm, still slower than the manufacturer's "up to 9.5 ppm" claim. The three-page mixed text and graphics document printed at 3.5 ppm. Each document exhibited very good, solid black text; and the graphics were as expected, more than acceptable at the default settings. An 8 by 10 inch digital camera photo of a darling baby, using the speed setting, popped out in one minute thirty-five seconds--with no complaints from the parents.
The print driver for both the 760 and 860 provide plenty of choices for a variety of printing needs. The default settings will usually produce excellent results, but if you wish to adjust the printing mode you can select PhotoEnhance, designed for scanned or digitally captured images, including sepia and soft focus effects. Custom settings provide you an extensive level of control over printed output, including color management, print quality dpi settings (ranging from 180 x 180 to 1440 x 720 dpi), limited halftoning, sharpness and tone modifications; you can save your settings for later use. Reducing and enlarging an image to fit a specific size of media is quickly accomplished. The driver also tracks the ink levels in the cartridges.
In addition to selecting 2- and 4-up printing, you can select the order of the pages on the single sheet and decide if you want them framed or not. Four, nine or sixteen page poster layouts are available and it only takes a few mouse clicks to add cutting lines, overlapping panels or to omit panels in which no printing occurs. A watermark can be placed almost anywhere on the page and you can determine its text as well as its color, density and size. Unfortunately, there is no provision in the driver for two-sided (duplex) printing.
The printer handles up to 100 sheets of paper or 10 envelopes in the input tray, and approximately 30 sheets in the output tray. Printing on cards, transparencies, labels, iron-on transfers and banners is also available; there is no straight through paper path. The Stylus Color 760 weighs approximately 12.8 pounds, the 860, 13.2 pounds; and with their papers trays fully extended both measure 6.9 by 17.7 by 25.5 inches (HWD). Epson says its black cartridge life is around 900 pages for letter-type documents, and the color cartridge will print approximately 300 pages with 15% coverage. If you're planning to print a lot of photos or graphic images, you can be sure the cartridge life will be much less. The Stylus Color 860 has a smoke-colored cover so you can preview output.
The 760 and 860 come with a nice software bundle that includes Polaroid PhotoMax Pro SE, ArcSoft PhotoPrinter SE, e-fax and Epson Film Factory.
Though overall color quality was not as saturated and rich as the HP DeskJet 970Cse, at $199 after rebate the Epson 760 does deserve a place on our WinList as a first-rate printer for the economy minded. The Stylus Color 860, priced at $279, is faster and produces the same fine quality output.

Detailed Specs (Epson Stylus 850, C251001):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Color 850 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
From Winmag
Epson's Stylus Color 850 offers the convenience of using only one set of cartridges ($29.95 each) for standard color and photographic-quality output. What's more, it provided faster throughput on our 20-page text document at 360dpi (4.25ppm) than did the Lexmark 7200 on our WinList. I put the company's reengineered print heads and four-color (CMYK) printing technology to the test by printing our 20-page text document and a photo of a baby. The printer delivered good-quality text and a photo that was extremely clear.
At the 360 dpi default setting, text printed on ink jet paper approached laser quality. At 720dpi, our three-page mixed text and graphics document printed at 0.76ppm with very dark black, while colors were vibrant, accurate and showed no white artifacts from incomplete coverage. However, the Lexmark 7200 did a better job than the Epson with text on inexpensive plain paper.
Printing color graphics and photographs, especially at a resolution of 1440x720dpi, highlighted one strength of the 850. Using a variety of me dia, including plain, ink jet and photographic quality papers, the Epson delivered rich colors, excellent flesh tones and clear delineation of details in photographs, though red was sometimes oversaturated.
Although the Epson offers faster print speeds than the Lexmark and needs only one set of cartridges for color and photo output, it's very noisy during operation. With better plain paper text performance, the less expensive, quieter Lexmark 7200 remains on the WinList.
From the Manufacturer
The Epson Stylus Color 850 is the new top-of-the- line color printer with faster print speeds and refined super Micro-Dot technology delivering unrivalled color print quality and laser sharp text.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - 'Baby 81,' the infant who has become Sri Lanka's most celebrated tsunami survivor, has made his debut on
U.S. breakfast television to raise funds for quake victims back home.
Gurgling at news anchors who clamoured to hug the 4-month-old, Abilass Jeyarajah appeared on ABC's 'Good Morning America'
show on Wednesday with his parents, whose custody battle was settled only after court-ordered DNA tests proved he was their son.
'God only knows why they didn't give him to us,' the boy's father, Murugupillai, told ABC of the wrenching custody fight, which quickly
became an international news story.
Abilass was seen by many as a beacon of hope for bereaved parents whose children were swept away by Asia's December 26
tsunami, which killed nearly 40,000 people along Sri Lanka's palm-fringed shores alone.
Ripped from his mother's arms by raging waters, Abilass was found alive amid debris on a Sri Lankan beach and taken to a hospital
where staff gave him the nickname as he was the 81st person taken to the hospital after the tsunami struck.
His parents, hearing a baby had been found, rushed to the hospital but were not allowed to take him home until DNA tests proved the

Detailed Specs (Epson 1200):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Photo 1200 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)

PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
Epson's latest doesn't merely print photos--it prints big photos.
The Stylus Photo 1200 has a wide carriage that feeds cut-sheet paper as large as 13 inches wide by 19 inches long. With an optional paper-roll feeder, you can print images up to 44 inches long. On standard 11-by-17-inch tabloid paper, the Photo 1200 can print right to the edge of the page.
Expected to cost about $500, the Stylus Photo 1200 uses Epson's six-color ink system, which supplements the standard black, cyan, magenta, and yellow inks with less-saturated cyan and magenta inks. Epson says the double shades enhance photorealism. Among other Epson four-color and six-color printers I've tested, the six-color models don't produce markedly better photos than the best four-color models--but both are remarkable.
The Stylus Photo 1200 can print at 1440-by-720 dots per inch, and Epson claims that at 720-by-720 dpi it can print an 8-by-10 photo in two minutes. PC World has not yet tested the 1200's performance on real-world printing tasks such as plain text and basic graphics.
Epson tuned the new printer for shutterbugs in another way: It can download images directly from an Epson PhotoPC 750Z digital camera and print photos without being attached to a PC.
Pricing for the paper-roll feeder and a PostScript option have not been set. A parallel port, a Mac serial port, and a Universal Serial Bus port are built in, and an optional Ethernet adapter is available (price not set). The printer's software bundle includes the Vivid Details Photoshop plug-in, Test Strip, for color correction and proofing; and the LE version of Adobe Photoshop 5.0.

Detailed Specs (Epson Stylus Color 860, C303001):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Color 860 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
If you're looking for an inkjet for business use, you probably don't want to sacrifice performance for the flexibility of printing in color. With the Epson Stylus Color 860 you don't have to--this unit offers high-quality 1,440 x 720 dots-per-inch (dpi) resolution and black-text print speeds as high as nine pages per minute (at lower resolutions).
The Stylus Color 860 features a sturdy case and an input tray, which holds up to 100 pages at about a 60-degree angle, feeds the paper downward, and ejects it horizontally out the front onto the 30-sheet output tray. An adjustable left-side paper guide lets you load stock as narrow as 3.75 inches wide, and the printer can handle up to 10 envelopes at a time. The printer supports a wide variety of paper stock, including special photo paper and transparencies, iron-on transfer sheets, and labels.
When one of the ink tanks needs to be replaced, an indicator illuminates. To replace the black or tri-color ink, just lift the top cover, press the button corresponding to the tank you need to change, and the print head moves to a special loading position. Each black tank is rated at about 900 pages of typical black text, and the color tank lasts for about 300 pages of 360-dpi printing at 15 percent coverage.
The 860 comes bundled with Polaroid PhotoMAX Pro, ArcSoft PhotoPrinter SE, eFax (PC only), Epson Software Film Factory. This unit comes with both parallel and Macintosh interfaces and offers a number of network interface options. With its fine design, high-resolution output, and good performance, the Stylus Color 860 is suitable for both office and home use.

The Epson Stylus Pro 7500 ($5,000 street) costs only a fraction of that original printer plus operating costs and can produce gorgeous, 24-inch-wide photo-quality prints and signage that are stable and color-fast, theoretically, for up to two centuries. While the 7500 is great at outputting archival prints to a wide variety of Epson media, its limitation is that it cannot switch from its special pigment-based inks to dye-based inks that would allow it to print faster and produce less expensive, standard prints.
The 7500 is an intelligently designed floor-size unit that can be assembled by two people in half an hour with a single provided Allen wrench. It can be configured as either a USB or a parallel printer, or as a 10/100 Base-T or IEEE-1394 device. For maximum throughput, Epson offers an optional ($5,000 street) RS5100 Fiery X2 RIP that attaches to the parallel port. Depending upon the resolution (1,440-by-720, 720-by-720, 720-by-360, 360-by-360), the 7500 can output between 12 and 72 square feet of photo-quality output per hour.
Installing media is simple—the six ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, light magenta, and black) slide into dedicated color-coded slots. Each oversized 110-ml cartridge contains enough ink to print continuously overnight. The 7500 takes either 24-inch paper rolls or cut sheets in a variety of media—glossy, matte, cloth, poster board, and others. Installing and threading paper rolls is easier, faster, and more foolproof than with any other wide printer we've tested. You push the paper set lever down, mount the roll onto a spindle, insert the roll into a pair of mounting brackets inside the printer, open the paper cover and feed the paper through the slot, and press the Pause button. The paper automatically feeds correctly, and the Cut/Eject button separates the excess leader.
Printing is quick, quiet, and trouble-free. Despite its large-size output, the 7500's print quality is gorgeous and sumptuous, with bright colors and rich detail. Photos display near continuous tone, and business graphics are colorful and razor sharp. The only drawbacks to the 7500 are that it cannot take Epson's cheaper inks, and using archival media means slower performance.
All in all, the 7500 is the wide printer par excellence for photographers or artists who want long-lasting, top-quality output. What's more, for businesses that require posters or other large prints it is a cost-effective alternative to outsourcing.
