Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

Detailed Specs (Epson Stylus Photo R1800, C11C589011):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Photo R1800 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
Taking Epson's award-winning technology one step further, the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 quickly creates large, archival quality glossy and matte photos worthy of display. Experience the rich, true-to-life colors and subtle detail that's evident in every image. It's all possible with Epson UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Inks, plus an industry leading resolution and ink droplet size - the same innovative features that made the Epson Stylus Photo R800 a resounding success.
This printer's impressive 8-color individual ink system, which incorporates red and blue inks, means you get a wider color gamut for incredibly vivid photos. Its separate matte and photo black ink cartridges are integrated into the system as well, so you get the deepest, darkest blacks on matte paper, and brilliant results on glossy paper automatically. Finally, the unique gloss optimizer makes glossy prints look like they came from a traditional photo lab. And, since the inks are pigment-based, you can be confident the color and detail will remain true for up to 200 years. The Epson Stylus Photo R1800 delivers studio quality results on a wide variety of media and in eight popular borderless sizes - up to 13-inches wide, as well as panoramics up to 44-inches long.
Best of all, the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 speeds through every project - so you can quickly print stacks of high-quality photos. And, its expertise goes well beyond the art of photographic prints. This photo printer makes it easy to add that special touch to your portfolio with professional quality printing on ink jet printable CDs and DVDs.¹Lightfastness rating of 104 years with Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, and 200 years with Epson Watercolor Paper Radiant White, based on accelerated testing of prints displayed indoors, framed under glass. Actual prints stability will vary according to display conditions, light intensity, humidity, and atmospheric conditions. Epson does not guarantee longevity of prints. For maximum print life, display all prints under glass or properly store them.
MSRP for Epson Stylus Photo R1800: $549.00
PC WORLD.com Editors' Review:
Just as digital cameras have become viable alternatives to film cameras, home-printed digital photos now rival the quality of the traditional silver-halide prints that commercial photo labs offer--that is, if you're using a top-quality printer such as the new Epson Stylus Photo R1800.
The $549 large-format inkjet model offers several outstanding features, including very high resolution and enhanced fade resistance, which make it a good choice for photography buffs or anyone who wants to produce high-quality archival prints. I tested a shipping version of the R1800 and found it capable of producing beautiful color prints from a variety of images.
Like its smaller cousin, the Epson Stylus Photo R800 ($399 street), the R1800 uses the Epson UltraChrome Hi-Gloss pigment ink set, which includes eight individual cartridges: In addition to the traditional cyan, magenta and yellow inks, the set uses red and blue inks, Photo Black and Matte Black inks, and a Gloss Optimizer that applies extra gloss and produces prints that look as if they were developed in a standard photo lab.
Both printers can issue tiny 1.5-picoliter ink droplets--for smoother, continuous-tone prints with crisp details--and both can print at a high resolution of up to 5760 by 1440 dpi (as well as lower-resolution modes).
But what separates the R1800 from the smaller R800 (and many other regular photo printers) is its media-handling flexibility. In addition to small (4-by-6-inch and 5-by-7-inch) prints and standard-size paper, the R1800 supports larger paper sizes up to 13 inches wide. It can also use wide panoramic roll paper (a roll-holder accessory is provided) with a maximum 13-by-44-inch printable area. You can even print directly onto inkjet-printable CDs and DVDs using a special tray (also included).
Ponderosa-Size Prints
Many of the images I used to produce test prints with the R1800 were created with a high-quality Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner ($449 street). I used the 4990 to make high-resolution (4800-dpi) scans from small 35mm film frames and then employed the R1800 to print the enlargements on 11-by-14-inch and 13-by-19-inch glossy paper.
I'm happy to report that the final prints that dropped onto the output tray didn't disappoint. The superb image quality--featuring accurate colors and saturation, realistic skin tones, and crisp details--in these huge prints, from tiny 35mm film, was very impressive. The R1800 also did a fine job of accurately reproducing the contrast, brightness, and shades of gray in black-and-white test photos.
Although the R1800 is designed primarily for glossy and matte photo prints (including borderless printing), it can also handle everyday printing tasks. However, I found it a bit slower than standard-size inkjets in some informal print tests. For instance, the R1800 clocked about 3 pages per minute for text (monochrome) documents, compared with 4 ppm (or more) for most inkjet models on our Top 10 Inkjet Printers chart.
But in printing large-format glossy color prints, the R1800's speed was quite decent: It took less than 2.5 minutes to knock out an 11-by-14-inch print and only a minute more to churn out a sizable 13-by-19-incher.
Even small 4-by-6-inch prints took the R1800 only about 50 seconds to produce.
The gray-and-black, 28.5-pound R1800 has a spacious footprint, taking more than 12 by 24 inches of desk space, and its output tray adds another foot to its depth when extended (for handling large prints). The unit features both USB 2.0 and FireWire ports, and it comes with a few print software utilities, such as a labeling application (for printing on CD/DVD media) and color profiles.
Installing the printer and software was relatively simple, but I did have to use the printer's Auto Nozzle Check and Cleaning utility (an easy one-click job) to get one of the cartridges (cyan) printing perfectly at the start. Epson is not sure what caused the problem; it may have been just a faulty cartridge.
That minor issue aside, if you want to produce your own high-quality photo prints--especially on large-format paper--the R1800 is worth its premium price.

PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
Epson's $449 Stylus Color 800 offers the same great print quality as our Best Buy, the Stylus Color 600. The 800 is a better fit for an office, though, because it's fast and has options to add an ethernet connection and PostScript.
The Stylus Color 800 shares the 600's easy installation CD-ROM, well-designed software controls and on-screen help, and two-year warranty. But it doesn't come with the Print Artist and PhotoDeluxe software; Epson claims that the Stylus Color 800 will appeal mostly to serious artists who already have the software they need.

Detailed Specs (Epson Stylus Photo 2000P, C373011):
Product Description for Epson 2000P (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
The Epson Stylus Photo 2000P inkjet printer was specifically designed with the professional photographer in mind. Providing quality printing for archival photo reproduction, it prints borderless, edge-to-edge images on sizes up to 13 x 44 inches. You can print in six rich colors using drop-on-demand Micro Piezo inkjet technology, and Epson's archival ink with MicroCrystal Encapsulation keeps colors long lasting and fade-resistant. Plus, you won't be caught dry, thanks to automatic low-ink detection.
This printer has an optimum resolution of 1,440 x 720 dpi for both black and color pages. Completed images arrive in under four minutes when printed on matte paper, and under six minutes when using semi-gloss sheets. While it can handle plain bond paper, it functions best when used with professional photo papers, including archival, glossy, watercolor, and radiant white matte. Maximum paper capacity is 100 sheets or ten envelopes.
The Photo 2000P printer is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems, which it accesses via either USB or parallel connections. It measures 21 by 30.3 by 16.3 inches and weighs just 18.5 pounds. A standard one-year limited warranty is included and supplemented by the Epson Exchange Program.
The Epson Stylus Photo 2000P is the ideal inkjet printer for elegant, borderless, edge-to-edge photo prints that will last generations. One of the most respected names in digital photography, Epson introduces a revolutionary new photo inkjet printer and truly ingenious ink technology that redefines the color photographic print.
Key features include Archival Photo Reproduction Quality technology that provides continuous-tone photo quality with over 200 years of lightfastness. Six-color archival inks, MicroCrystal Encapsulation technology, and fast-setting scratch-resistant results will rival prints from a photo lab. Ultra-small variable microdroplets of ink and an intuitive use of droplet sizes achieve fine shadow detail and dazzling highlights, and better fill in solid areas across a gamut of colors. Award-winning Micro Piezo inkjet technology pinpoints precise ink droplet size and placement and eliminates misting and satellites.
The 2000P includes a roll paper holder for quick, easy loading of 4-inch, 8.3-inch, and 13-inch roll type paper. Enjoy your choice of Epson custom-engineered media, including semigloss, matte, luster, and watercolor. The unit is Windows and Mac compatible, with built-in USB and parallel connections, and it's flexible enough to perform with almost any application platform.
Street Price: $330.00
PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
Looking for a printer with image quality so good you'll never again need to trudge to a photo lab for color prints or enlargements? The $899 Stylus Photo 2000P from Epson doesn't just produce lab-quality output: Epson says prints created with a breakthrough, pigmented six-color ink technology could last up to 200 years. Designed to generate images suitable for presentation and resale, this printer should interest professionals and photography enthusiasts who want to move away from commercial photo processing.
In my tests of this shipping model, prints made on Epson's Premium Semigloss paper stock rivaled photos developed by a photo lab. Scanned photos printed on the printer looked as good as the originals or even better. Color-image output was rich and clear, with realistic colors and accurate flesh tones. Epson doesn't recommend the unit for black-and-white photos.
The Stylus Photo 2000P can handle paper sizes from 3.5 by 3.5 inches to 13 by 44 inches; Epson itself sells a wide range of custom resin-coated photographic papers and fine-art media.
Print speeds are relatively fast; in my tests, an 8-by-10-inch print took between 4 and 6 minutes, depending on the settings I selected. The printer uses two cartridges--one for black ($33), and one for the five other colors ($38).
This printer isn't appropriate for churning out text or routine business graphics, but it raises the bar for ink jet printing of photographs.

Detailed Specs (Epson 1160, C295001):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Color 1160 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
The Epson Stylus Color 1160 ink-jet printer is a handy tool for extra-wide presentations, spreadsheets, photos, and bigger CAD/CAM drawings. It's highly flexible, supporting images with fields of up to 13 by 44 inches.
The 1160 is long rather than deep, a necessity for printing large images and a useful design if your peripherals live on a shallow shelf or cabinet. With impressively sturdy construction, the 1160 is a snap to set up. Plug it in, load the software and two ink cartridges, then print. If you have little experience with printer setup and need assistance, we suggest tossing out the poster-size instructions and referring instead to the helpful user's guide, which is supplemented by an electronic reference guide.
With high 1,440 x 720 dpi resolution and a four-color ink-jet system, you'll produce crisp, clear images. Four-picoliter ink droplets compose the fine lines and detailing of your work. Epson combines Micro Piezo ink-jet technology with AcuPhoto halftones to bring out natural skin tones with smooth gradations. An added value is the truly fast printing speeds--up to 9.5 ppm for black and up to 7 ppm in color on regular paper sizes. (Expect slower speeds for large projects.) We appreciated the rapid drying time for inks, which reduced smudging.
A bigger paper tray would have been useful for major projects, but the paper guide slides easily to accommodate envelopes and 4-by-6-inch photo paper. The page-output trays are built into an ingenious door that closes securely when not in use. Slide-out extensions support larger paper sizes.
Overall we found this machine perfectly suitable for a busy office environment. For offices combining Windows, Macintosh, and iMac users, the 1160 features built-in USB and parallel ports for both systems. Your staff can easily share the link to the 1160 via built-in printer sharing. Epson backs the 1160 with a one-year limited warranty.

PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
Either you like your electronics small--as with PDAs and all-in-one PCs--or you prefer broader vistas, like 21-inch displays and wide-format printers. With its new Stylus Color 1160,Epson stands firmly in the plus-size printer camp: This color ink jet handles standard-size pages up to 13 by 19 inches and rolled banner paper up to 44 inches long. At $449, the Stylus Color 1160 is destined for offices that need to print large pages with high output quality but don't want to shell out big-ticket prices for a wide-format color laser. I tested a shipping unit.
As with most Epsons, the 1160 can produce gorgeous photographs, though you'll need to use more costly ink jet paper or glossy photo stock to get the best quality. The printer is quiet and petite for a wide-format model: Folded up, it's 2 feet wide by 1 foot deep by 6 inches high; with the paper trays extended, it gains a foot in depth and height.
The 1160 has reasonable speed for an ink jet. Both letter-size text pages and an 11-by-17-inch chart took 30 seconds per page to print (it takes a few seconds longer in "quality" mode). More complicated pages with graphics printed in about a minute, while a glossy full-page photo ran close to 5 minutes but looked luscious.
Competition for the 1160 abounds. Epson itself makes another wide-format printer, the Stylus Color 1520.
You can find the 1520 for about $100 less than the 1160, but you're wiser to choose the 1160. Although it costs more, it contains newer technology and delivers better output quality. Also, Hewlett-Packard has just come out with the DeskJet 1220C, which we couldn't get in time to test. Typical for HP, it's pricey--$499--but the output I saw in previews was beautiful. Even so, the Epson 1160's quality is high and at these prices, every $50 counts.

Detailed Specs (Epson Stylus Color 740):
Product Description for Epson 740 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
The Epson Stylus Color 740 produces near laser-quality text and 1,440-dpi printed color images. Epson's PerfectPicture Imaging System, a blend of features that includes tiny ink jets, smooth AccuPhoto Halftoning, and quick-drying inks helps produce rich color.
Setting up the Epson 740 was straightforward for an ink-jet printer. We followed the short setup instructions and connected the printer cable (not included) to our PC. When Windows detected the new printer, we followed the Windows New Hardware wizard and specified that our new printer driver was in the CD-ROM drive. The driver automatically installed itself and additional software as well. (When setting up, be careful not to remove the blue section of the protective tape that covers the ink cartridges.)
We tested Epson's claim that its technology produces printing "noticeably richer, deeper, and finely detailed" by printing text in a variety of fonts and sizes. Although our samples were obviously from an ink-jet printer rather than a laser printer, they were still very sharp. We also printed color digital photographs on specialty ink-jet photo paper; the resulting printouts were bright and detailed.
Ink-jet technology is a low-cost way to get sharp text and beautiful colors, and the Epson 740 implements the technology in an easy-to-use package.
Pros:
- Easy to set up
- Prints sharp text and graphics
Cons:
- Slow printing of high-resolution graphics and pictures
- Printer cable not included
This printer model is not being manufactured by Epson any more
PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
The $279 Epson Stylus Color 740 features the smallest droplet size in the industry, the company said. Generally speaking, the smaller the droplet size, the crisper and better-defined images will be. Small droplet size can also contribute to richer colors.
The Stylus Color 740 is aimed at the small-business user. It features 1440 x 720 dpi resolution and supports Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectivity for both Windows 98 and Macintosh, including the new iMac. The model runs at approximately 6 pages per minute (ppm) monochrome and 4.5 ppm for color text and graphics, according to Epson. Bundled software includes Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 and Broderbund's The Print Shop PressWriter.

Detailed Specs (Epson PictureMate Printer):
Product Description for Epson PictureMate (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
The PictureMate from Epson is a photo printer designed to produce lab-quality prints from the comfort of your own home. With its simple one-touch printing, 5,760 x 1,440 maximum dpi resolution, and convenient PictureMate Print Packs, this printer is a remarkable combination of quality, ease of use, and affordability.
The PictureMate prints JPEG or TIFF photos from any USB digital camera and is compatible with both Mac and PC operating platforms. A wide variety of card types are also accepted, including CF Type I and II, SmartMedia, Sony Memory Stick/MemoryStick PRO, Duo (requires adapter), SD, MMC, and xD-Picture.
The printer initially comes with a starter photo cartridge and 20 sheets of paper. Thereafter, you'll purchase PictureMate Print Packs, which contain 100 sheets of paper and a photo ink cartridge with an approximate 100-page yield.
The prints resist water, smudging, and most notably fading. Epson estimates an archival lifetime of up to 200 years if the photos are kept in a relatively dark place (such as a photo album) or up to 100 years in a frame (see Epson's web site for details). True borderless printing (or bordered, if you prefer) combined with sturdy stock help to give your prints a professional look and feel. A cartridge level indicator lets you know how much ink you have left.
Other features include a multiple print function that lets you make up to 100 copies of a single picture. A Save Photo button lets you back up digital files directly to an external CD-R, Zip drive, or USB Thumb drive.
The small 10-by-6-inch footprint fits neatly onto your desk or countertop, and the convenient handle provides true portability. An optional Bluetooth adapter lets you print wirelessly from Bluetooth enabled devices. The PictureMate is backed by a one-year limited warranty.
What's in the Box
PictureMate Personal Photo Lab, power cord, starter PictureMate photo cartridge, 20 sheets of PictureMate Photo Paper, CD-ROM, user manuals; Epson Software Film Factory 3.05 (PC and Macintosh compatible, P.I.M. and Exif Print-enabled); USB cable not included
- Easy one-touch printing for lab-quality glossy borderless 4-by-6-inch photos
- Ideal companion for any digital camera–no computer required
- Water and fade-resistant photos–up to 100 years when displayed in a glass frame, up to 200 years in a photo album
- Convenient and affordable PictureMate Print Pack
- Compatible with Windows and Macintosh computers
Brilliant Lab Quality
What if you could print photos that look as good as the photo lab right in the comfort and safety of your own home? Think that's impossible? Not anymore. PictureMate delivers stunning photos just like those from a photo lab, bringing you the brilliance of everyday moments captured by your digital camera.
With its unique six-color pigment technology and industry-leading resolution, PictureMate's true-to-life photos will truly amaze you with rich, vibrant colors and beautiful skin tones. It's all you expect from a photo lab print, in a product that fits your life.
Ease of Use
Digital photography doesn't have to be difficult. In fact, with PictureMate, it couldn't be easier. With just one touch of a button, you can print stacks of beautiful photos. It's easy to use, easy to own, and fully compatible with all popular camera memory cards and PictBridge cameras.
It's simple and versatile. You can print your photos in black-and-white or sepia tones, with classic borders, borderless, or wallet sizes. You can even crop and resize your photos. Do all this without ever turning on your PC.
The PictureMate Print Pack includes a Photo Cartridge and 100 sheets of PictureMate 4-by-6-inch photo paper conveniently packaged together in one box. PictureMate is the perfect accessory for your digital camera. Just snap, print, and enjoy!
Long Lasting Results
Whether in an album, a frame, or a shoebox, we all want our photos to last. But digital photos are lost every day to hard drive crashes and other mishaps. Epson created PictureMate to help you preserve your memories so even your great-grandkids could enjoy photos of your most loyal companions.
When displayed, PictureMate photos resist fading as much as two to four times longer than the leading photo lab brands, and about four to 20 times longer than other dedicated 4-by-6-inch photo printers. Made to share for generations--even centuries, PictureMate photos last approximately 200 years in a photo album and up to 100 years when displayed in a glass frame. They are also water- and smudge-resistant for worry-free handling. (See Wilhelm-research.com for test conditions. Actual print stability will vary according to image and storage or display conditions. Epson does not guarantee the longevity of prints.)
Affordable 29-Cent Prints
For the first time ever, you can print 4-by-6-inch photos at home for the same price as some of the most affordable photo labs. PictureMate photos are also less expensive than most kiosks and online services, and about half the cost of other 4-by-6 photo printers. At around 29 cents a photo, you can finally print to your heart's content. (Actual yields and cost will vary based on images, color balance, environmental conditions, and frequency of use.)
MSRP for Epson PictureMate: $199.00
Street Price: $169.00 - $249.00
CNET.com Editors' rating: 7.3 Good
User rating: 87% good, 13% bad
The good: Economical; excellent print quality; connects directly to cameras, media cards, and external storage devices; compact; easy to operate; Mac and Windows compatible.
The bad: No color LCD for previewing or cropping images; AC-only operation; slow.
The bottom line: This portable photo printer produces quality output, but we wish it ran on batteries. It could stand to be a lot faster, too.

Detailed Specs (Epson 870, C304101):

With the Epson Stylus Photo 870 ink-jet printer, the burgeoning artist or professional photographer will prize this user-friendly desktop photo lab for its photo-quality printing of light-stable and water-resistant prints. The serious power user will appreciate the 870's quick printing and high resolution: six-color, 1,400 x 720 dpi quality 8-by-10-inch prints in under two minutes and 11-by-14-inch prints in under four minutes. PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
The Epson Stylus Photo 870 is optimized for photo printing. It prints with six colors, adding light cyan and light magenta to the standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. It is a reasonable choice for all-purpose printing. It is well worth considering.
If you have a USB connection, setup is identical for all four printers: Connect the cable, then install the ink cartridges and driver.
The 870 has a print engine, which should translate to identical output quality and speed, although for the particular units we had. In default mode, we saw well-formed text but subtle banding in solid fills, visible dithering, and somewhat ragged lines in graphics. The thinnest lines on our test graphic with a black background barely held. In quality mode, we saw marginally crisper lines and text, no banding, and barely visible dithering, but the thinnest lines disappeared from our graphics. Photos on photo paper passed for true photographic quality, except for an obvious thinning of fine lines in the numbers on a clock face.
Photo printers are optimized for printing photos rather than text and focus on quality rather than speed, so it's not surprising that overall speed for these three is on the low side of average, ranging from 0.9 to 1.0 ppm. Nor is it surprising that these printers yielded their poorest performance on Word documents. The software bundled with the 870 includes Adobe Photo Deluxe Home 3.1 (a photo-editing program that targets home users) and Epson Software Film Factory (a photo management program). Casual hobbyists should find these useful, since they round out an attractive package that's well suited for anyone who wants high-quality photos from a letter-size printer.

PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
WHAT'S HOT: The $129 Epson's print quality isn't bad for such an inexpensive model, and neither is its graphics performance, at 0.7 pages per minute. The Stylus Color 440 comes with good documentation and is easy to set up and use. Also, kids can have a lot of fun with the software bundle: Adobe PhotoDeluxe, American Greetings' CreataCard, and StickerPix Lite. We liked the way this printer handled our color photograph test on high-quality paper. Images looked bright, and colors seemed realistic.
WHAT'S NOT: Text printing speed could be better. At 2 pages per minute, the 440 is as slow as our other slow-poke, the Canon BJC-2000, but costs $30 more. Same story on the 440's performance: Two pages per minute for text isn't bad, but it's hardly inspiring.
WHAT ELSE: The 440 feels somewhat sturdier than most printers in this price range, which is no surprise thanks to a heavy, double-layer output tray and an underlying steel frame.
BEST USE: Definitely for kids. With its low price, easy setup, and fun software bundle, the 440 would work well for families that don't need top speeds or the best output quality.

Detailed Specs (Epson Stylus 875DC, C364011):

It can produce 4-by-6-inch edge-to-edge prints in less than 1 minute and 8-by-10-inch prints in less than 2 minutes. The input tray has a capacity of 100 sheets or 10 envelopes.
With its USB interface, the Stylus Photo 875DC is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh systems. It comes with a PCMCIA CompactFlash adapter, color and black ink cartridges, and Image Expert and Adobe Photo Deluxe software.
From Winmag
If you're a digital camera user, there's nothing more important than high-quality output from a printer that does justice to your images. Epson's Stylus Photo 875DC does just that, and features a built-in digital film card reader to simplify transferring images from your camera. At $299, it's a steal.
The Stylus Photo 875DC works with a variety of media, from glossy photo paper to heavyweight matte paper. It even has a paper holder for feeding in roll stock for printing a continuous stream of 4 by 6 inches snapshots – with coverage right to the edge of the paper.
The unit's digital film card reader is a PC Card slot that is recognized as a drive by Windows. There’s a PC Card in the box that supports Compact Flash-compatible memory cards. If you have Smart Media or Sony Memory Stick storage, you may need to purchase an adapter. There's no LCD display window to lead you through menus that allow you to print thumbnails or individual images from the files on your memory device.
The printer offers five print modes. For everyday printing you'd choose economy mode to print at 180 x 180 dpi (for business documents). The remaining modes make use of Epson's Variable Sized Droplet Technology, putting down large droplets in dark areas and smaller droplets (down to 4 picoliters) in light, complex areas. Smaller drops means gradients appear smoother and skin tones look more natural.
Normal mode (360 x 360 dpi) and fine mode (360 x 720 dpi) are the "low-end" choices for photos. The Stylus Photo 875DC's strength is how it handles photos, however. Photo Mode (at 720 x 720 dpi) is best for detailed photographic images. It's a balance between speed and quality. A second Photo Mode prints at 1440 x 720 dpi. It's the top-of-the-line setting when only the highest quality output will do.
The printer uses two quick-drying ink cartridges -- a black cartridge for true black and a five-color cartridge (cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, and light magenta). You can view ink levels at any time by clicking on a tab on the printer's Properties screen. Both print heads have 48 nozzles per color.
The 875DC's forte is its photo quality output, so we didn't expect much in the way of speed for our standard text-based tests. For our 20-page monochrome text-only document, the “Speed” setting (which doesn't resemble the washed out "draft" modes of some competitors) and "Black print" setting resulted in 1.8 pages per minute output. The 3-page text-and-graphics test document, using "Speed" and "Color print" settings, emerged into the printer's 30-page output tray at 2.1 ppm. Switching from Speed to Quality setting didn't result in noticeably faster output.
There's no question about the quality. Even small text (4- and 5-point fonts) was readable. Another plus: the printer is whisper quiet – the best Epson I've ever tested in that regard.
Then I started working with Epson's Premium Glossy Photo Paper, and…Wow! There's plenty of speed; a 5 by 7 inches image took 31 seconds to print on plain paper, and just 2:22 to print on the photo paper. Results were excellent. A picture of fruit showed grapes and apples with the right sheen. Images of a young model showed true, properly saturated colors and excellent detail (hair strands and facial shadows, for example), even tricky flesh tones were no trouble for the 875DC. I ran a whole gamut of images through the printer, from on-the-fly digital camera shots to professionally produced graphics files; for my money, the output quality can’t be beat.
The input tray can handle 100 pages or 10 envelopes, from 3.5 by 3.5 inches media to banner-sized 8.5 x 44" paper (either pre-cut or on a roll).
The driver incorporates an option to automatically adjust optimizing digital camera images. Called PhotoEnhance 4, it automatically corrects exposure and contrast.
Epson includes Sierra Imaging's Image Expert for managing your photos. The program starts automatically when it senses media in the card slot. If you need to touch up your photos, you'll find Adobe Photo Deluxe 3.1 in the box as well.
The driver lets you reduce your output (from legal to letter, for example, or to a user-selected percentage), print 2- and 4-pages to a single sheet (you can even specify how those pages are arranged), and you can print a 4-, 9-, or 16-sheet poster. There's support for watermarks, too, but, as you’d expect in printer optimized for photos, none for duplex printing.
With paper supports fully extended, the printer measures 11.5 x 17.5 x 24.5 inches (HWD); it weighs 14 pounds. Epson backs the unit with a one-year limited warranty.
There are two limitations worth mentioning. In order to handle the PC Card interface, the printer connects via USB only (and no cable is included). Furthermore, the printer works only with Windows 98 and 2000.
Some discussion boards have raised concerns about color-shift in some Epson photo prints. The company says it's mostly a result of ozone and other contaminants reacting with Epson's Premium Photo Glossy paper, but if you put your output under glass or out of harm's way, you shouldn't have a problem. The company also says it has reformulated its paper which will be available in retail in December. I didn't see any color-shift problems during or after my tests.
If you want a workhorse printer for your everyday print needs, you'll be best served by the Epson Stylus Color 980 on our WinList, for $199 after a $50 rebate. The 980's faster print speed with text and mixed-text-and-graphics documents recommends it. If you need a printer that will deliver higher-quality photo output (where speedy text printing is a lower priority or if you already have a text printer), the Epson Stylus Photo 875DC makes sense. The Stylus Photo 875DC joins the WinList, replacing the Stylus Photo 870.
This printer model is not being manufactured by Epson any more
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
Slowly, step by technological step, printouts of digital photographs are approaching the quality and longevity of film prints. Epson's $299 Stylus Photo 875DC six-color ink jet printer provides the latest nudge in that direction, with a top resolution of 1440 by 720 dpi.
Epson claims that its Photo Inks and Premium Glossy Photo Paper look as good and last as long as photo lab prints when they're properly stored. We don't know about that, but the printouts we made in 1440 Photo Mode looked suitable for framing.
The company estimates that a single 8-by-10-inch print in 1440 Photo Mode will cost about $1.25. An optional $39 adapter lets you produce 4-by-6-inch prints edge to edge (without borders); a 50-print roll of the paper costs about $20. If you use removable-storage PC Cards with your digital camera, you'll appreciate the printer's built-in reader.
What's hot: Epson's ink and paper technologies create high-quality, long-lasting prints.
What's not: Potentially high cost per print in high-resolution 1440 Photo Mode.
Geek factor: High

Detailed Specs (Epson 820, C11C483001):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Photo 820 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
Epson combines brilliant color with 2,880 x 720 dpi resolution in the Stylus Photo 820. Epson's PRINT Image Matching technology oversees six separate fast-drying color photo inks that are formed into superfine 4-picoliter droplets, resulting in bright, accurate, true-to-life color. The 820's prints are frequently indistinguishable from standard photographs, making this an ideal printer for professional applications as well as the home office.
Print speed is a respectable 12 ppm for black-and-white prints, while a 4-by-6-inch photo takes roughly 48 seconds. The 820 supports a wide variety of media types, including standard letter-size paper; greeting cards; banners up to 44 inches; and 4-by-6-inch, 5-by-7-inch, and 8-by-10-inch borderless papers. The input tray holds 100 sheets or 10 envelopes, and the output tray holds 30 sheets.
The Software bundle includes Epson Software Film Factory with Print Image Matching support, Arcsoft PhotoImpression 3.0, and QBeo PhotoGenetics 2.0 TE. Installation and connectivity are easy, with both USB and parallel ports provided. Compatible with both Windows and Macintosh, the Photo 820 comes with a one-year warranty and is backed by the Epson Exchange program.
Epson provides the home office user or photography enthusiast with an excellent photo printer in the Stylus Photo 820. Using 6-color photo inks, resolutions reach a gorgeous 2,880 x 720 dpi. With this high quality the Stylus Photo 820 can still print a 4-by-6-inch photo in under a minute, and black-text pages stream out at a 12 page per minute (ppm) clip.
To ensure that your photo prints are attractive as possible, Epson has included BorderFree printing on letter-size paper. Now you can fill the entire page with beautiful, high-quality color photos.
The Stylus Photo 820 can also print to a variety of paper sizes, from 4-by-6-inch photo paper, to standard letter size, even banners up to a user-definable 44 inches in length. The Stylus Photo 820 also prints a variety of envelope sizes and transparencies.
The printer is compatible with Windows or Mac systems via USB connection, or with older Windows systems through its parallel port. Epson covers the Stylus Photo 820 with a one-year warranty.
MSRP for Epson Stylus Photo 820: $79.00
Street Price: $100.00 - $150.00
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
WHAT'S HOT: Epson's Stylus Photo 820 is a six-ink photo printer priced at $99--that's a deal. (The six-ink-design, common on high-end photo printers, includes light shades of cyan and magenta in addition to the standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.) And you can see the benefits of the six inks on glossy paper, where the Stylus Photo 820 renders highly detailed, rich, and realistic-looking photographs. Epson packs the 820 with clear, logical printed documentation and a great on-screen manual containing a batch of how-to movies.
WHAT'S NOT: It didn't surprise us that the Stylus Photo 820 printed slightly grayish text with rough edges--after all, Epson designed this printer for photos, not text. But we were disappointed by its grainy gray-scale images and foggy looking color graphics. Printing on ink jet paper didn't improve the quality of text or gray scales much. We found Epson's feature-laden driver confusing. For example, on its main tab the PhotoEnhance pop-up menu lets you set an image's color to make people or nature look more realistic or to appear in soft focus; elsewhere in the driver, a similarly named feature called PhotoEnhance4 lets you choose tone and texture settings. Like most photo printers, the 820 can hit you hard with ink costs: Based on Epson's estimated yields, black text should cost 7.3 cents a page and light-duty color graphics 17.3 cents, compared to the average of 4.4 cents and 12.7 cents.
WHAT ELSE: Graphics print out fairly quickly, at 1.3 pages per minute, but text prints at just 1.9 ppm, about a third of the average print speed of ink jets on PC World's Top 10 chart. Epson provides two good software packages with the Stylus Photo 820: ArcSoft's PhotoImpression photo editor, and Epson's own Film Factory software, which lets you store, manage, and lightly edit your digital images.
UPSHOT: The Stylus Photo 820's low purchase price and attractive glossy photos gear it to people who've just discovered digital cameras, but it's not appropriate for letter writers.

Detailed Specs (Epson Photo 700, C233011):
Product Description for Epson Stylus Photo 700 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
If your chief task is printing photos but you need a printer at a value price, the Epson Stylus Photo 700 may be an ideal choice. This inkjet features both hardware and software that are geared toward producing photographs, and, on Epson photo paper, you'll get the benefit of 1,440 x 720 dpi resolution.
The Photo 700 uses six colors of ink to provide accurate color balance. The unit accepts a five-color (cyan, magenta, yellow, light-cyan,light-magenta) ink cartridge and a separate black cartridge. With this version of Epson's proprietary Micro Piezo inkjet technology, the printhead remains in the unit when you change a cartridge.
The sturdy case includes a fold-down telescoping output tray in the front, a 100-sheet input tray in the rear, and a flip-up top cover that runs the width of the printer. The unit sets up quickly—plug in the parallel cable, drop in the ink tanks, and secure them with the intuitive lock/release levers.
A CD-ROM provides both Windows and Macintosh versions of helpful applications, collectively called Epson Digital Photo Lab. Titles include Adobe Photo Deluxe for image editing, Epson Photo Sheet for printing sheets of photos in various sizes, Extensis Portfolio for organizing photos, PictureWorks Spin Panorama for producing panoramic pictures, and the DiaMAR Learning to See Creatively LE tutorial.
Speed is not this model's strong suit—a plain-text document prints at only 1.2 pages per minute in monochrome mode—but photos are of surprisingly high quality given the printer's low price. Note that the unit includes both parallel and serial interfaces. The latter is for connection to older Macintosh computers and to select Epson digital cameras.

PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
Even without a digital camera, the $279 Stylus Photo 700 offers great photo features. Its six-color ink technology produces subtle, realistic color graphics and photos--the best of this group on high-quality ink jet paper. Color printing on ordinary paper is about the same as with the other printers here--less impressive but still good. It also prints crisp black text on good paper, though on plain paper the HP DeskJet 722C does better. Gray-scale graphics are gorgeous, even on regular paper.
The Stylus Photo 700's Achilles' heel is performance: At only 1.3 ppm on text, it's snail-like compared to the other ink jets on the chart. But the 700 can help small businesses in other ways. Its ease of use will minimize the need for training multiple users. A strong photo-oriented software package is bundled with the printer, including Adobe PhotoDeluxe, a photo-archiving database, and a program for creating panoramic images. And Epson sells a vast assortment of media--more than HP--specifically for the 700, including 4-by-6-inch snapshot sheets ($6.99 for a package of 20) and 8.5-by-24-inch panorama sheets ($16.57 for 10).
