The Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX printer combines high-speed printing with brilliant color and an affordable price tag. It uses fast-drying color photo inks in six tanks, for convenient and economical replacement. A maximum 2,880 x 720 dpi printing resolution, superfine 4-picoliter ink droplets, and PRINT Image Matching technology all combine to produce bright, accurate, true-to-life color. The 785EPX's photo prints are frequently indistinguishable from standard photographs, making this an ideal printer for both select professional applications and home hobbyists.
The 785EPX offers the convenience of photo printing with or without a computer. A PCMCIA Type II card slot is included along with a PCMCIA Type I adapter that supports CompactFlash Type I cards, providing direct printing from many popular digital cameras. An optional adapter supports Sony Memory Stick, SmartMedia, Type II CompactFlash, IBM Microdrive, and Secure Digital cards.
The 785 EPX prints on a variety of media, including standard letter size, greeting cards, banners, 4-inch roll paper, and 4-by-6, 5-by-7, and 8-by-10-inch borderless paper. Print speed is a respectable 8 ppm for black-and-white prints, while a draft (but still good-looking) 4-by-6-inch photo takes roughly 54 seconds.

Installation with a PC or Mac is straightforward via the built in USB and PCMCIA ports. Adjusting print settings is easy thanks to the intuitive onboard control panel.
The 785 EPX comes standard with a roll-paper holder and a one-year warranty.
The Epson 785EPX supports digital camera memory cards with an adapter. It offers superior six-color inks and 2,880 x 720 dpi resolution. The Epson Stylus Color 900 ink-jet printer is Epson's fastest ink-jet printer, pumping out crisp, sharp black text and eye-pleasing color at speeds of 12 and 10 ppm (pages per minute), respectively. The Epson Stylus Color 900 also gives you 1,440 x 720 dpi output while producing the smallest ink droplets ever, a minuscule 3 picoliters each. This small ink droplet promises to produce more intense highlights, sharper details, and more realistic skin tones. This printer also includes Epson's PerfectPicture Imaging System. This built-in system combines Epson's award-winning Micro Piezo technology, AcuPhoto Halftoning, and expertly formulated, quick-drying inks.
The Epson Stylus Color 900 enables you to print on most media, including standard paper, bond paper, transparencies, envelopes, photo paper, and even iron-on transfers. Epson's new Stylus Color 900 boasts the most photo-realistic output of the four printers in this review-but you'll have to wait for it. At the printer's highest-resolution setting (1440x720dpi), our test photo took 10 minutes, 27 seconds-the slowest in this group. Still, it's worth the wait: Even the subtlest nuances of an image-such as the tiles on a distant roof and continuous skin tones-are reproduced perfectly. If you're in a hurry, try the lower-resolution Photo Paper mode, which delivered a slightly grainier but still excellent version of the photo in 2 minutes, 34 seconds. Both printouts looked paler than those from the other printers, especially in areas with a lot of red, but the detail was impeccable.
Text output is fast, roughly neck and neck with the HP DeskJet 895Cse for tops in this group. The solid, dark text was legible and quite suitable for business use, but it showed slight speckling around the edges and was not as crisp as the DeskJet 895Cse's.
The Stylus Color 900's drivers provide constant on-screen monitoring of ink levels during printing, so you're not likely to be surprised by an empty cartridge. The printer is rather noisy when feeding a new page, but nearly silent while printing.
You can connect the Stylus Color 900 to parallel, serial or USB ports. And you can pick your own software bundle, choosing two programs from a group that includes Lotus Mail/Freelance/Organizer, Corel Print Office, Ventura Publisher 7, CorelDRAW Select Edition and more. PostScript Level 3 support-excellent for complex graphics and type rendering-is optional.

WHAT'S HOT: If you really need speed and don't mind shelling out nearly $400, you might like Epson's Stylus Color 900. Printing text at 6.8 ppm, it beats all the others here handily, and it tears through graphics as fast as some models print text. The 900 comes with parallel, USB, and serial ports to accommodate either a PC or a Macintosh. And if the printer breaks down, don't worry: Epson's overnight-exchange warranty covers you. It's the only such policy among the printers here.
WHAT'S NOT: The $399 price, first of all. That kind of money could buy you a fast, reliable monochrome laser. Second, the 900's paper input tray sits precariously in its slot and has the annoying habit of falling off when you adjust it. Lastly, for anyone working in tight quarters, the printer's space requirements may prove a problem: With output trays extended, it stretches 25 inches from back to front.
WHAT ELSE: The Stylus Color 900 pumps out good text quality, and graphics look adequate, if a little bit grainy. Its printheads are permanent; the only consumable you'll have to pay for is ink.
BEST USE: Take this one to the office. With its high price and great speed, it'll feel like overkill in the home.

WHAT'S HOT: Epson's Stylus Color 980 prints faster than any other model in our Top 10 chart. It churns out text at 6.6 ppm and prints graphics at 2 ppm--almost twice the speed of the next-fastest ink jet. That's a lot of performance for $249. Its permanent printheads help the 980 maintain low costs per page: at 3.5 cents per page for black ink and 9.8 cents per page for color. Epson throws in some nice photo-editing software, and the printer driver includes settings for creating special effects--such as converting images to a sepia tone or giving them a canvas- or parchment-like texture--for people who don't want to fine-tune the software themselves. A final plus: The printer is heavy and its components seem to be made of sturdy stuff.
WHAT'S NOT: Though the 980 prints text almost as fast as a monochrome laser, it doesn't print it nearly as well. Edges of letters have a gridlike hatching, and large letters show roughness on curves and straight lines. Color graphics appear grainy, slightly foggy, and poorly detailed. The printer's paper support fits loosely into slots rather than clipping tight to the machine; consequently, when you move the 980, the paper support often falls off. The printer is loud too.
WHAT ELSE: Epson's printed documentation clearly explains how to set up, operate, and troubleshoot the printer. This top-notch effort is complemented by an online manual that includes Flash animations of common maintenance tasks.
BEST USE: The 980 makes a workhorse machine for the small office or home, though print quality could be better.

The Epson Stylus 880 has more going for it that its curvaceous lines; this sleek printer also delivers vibrant colors and crisp black with 2,800 x 720 dpi resolution in quick-drying, smudge-proof inks. This compact Epson printer incorporates MicroPiezo ink-jet technology and AcuPhoto halftones, along with a small footprint and quiet operation. It's ideally suited for use in a home or small office.
Like most printers in this class, the Epson 880 sets up in a couple of trouble-free minutes. The color- and black-ink cartridges snap in easily with virtually no risk of mess or error. A fold-out guide helps you follow the detailed setup steps; you also can review the printer-basics section in Epson's user's guide or view the electronic manual if you have any questions.
In our tests, while printing an assortment of images on some of the included specialty papers, the 880 produced admirable results, with print speeds up to 12 ppm in black and 9 ppm for color and graphics. Photo prints initially didn't fare as well, so we used the photo-enhancement setting to improve brightness and contrast.
You can expect 600 to 900 pages of black printing (fewer than 300 for color) before replacing the ink cartridges. An onscreen, low-ink-detection display tracks how much ink you have left during printing. A 100-sheet input tray accepts a wide range of standard papers, envelopes, and other media, including labels, photo paper, and card stock. The paper tray has a convenient slide-out extension for legal-size paper, with a 30-page capacity. The 880's small footprint and quiet operation make it ideal for small spaces.
The printer comes with software for most Windows or Macintosh systems and for USB connectivity, and is backed by a one-year warranty.

WHAT'S HOT: The Stylus Color 880 offers snappy 4.5-pages-per-minute text speed. And printers that rival the 880's graphics performance typically cost $100 more. The software Epson packs with the 880 could encourage you to spread lots of ink--the bundle includes ArcSoft's PhotoImpression 2000, a photo editor that includes templates and do-it-yourself projects; ArcSoft's PhotoMontage 2000, for creating an image from many small photos; and Epson's own Film Factory. The printed manual provides clear, thorough coverage of how to set up and use the printer, and the online manual provides a wealth of tips on getting the most out of printing. The 880 has both USB and parallel ports. And unlike Epson's older printers, it operates quietly.
WHAT'S NOT: Print quality could use some work. We found organic but muddy colors that cover up detail, dark and grainy gray-scale graphics, narrow lines that bunch together, and text with slightly rough edges and chunkiness. As is true with many of Epson's ink jets, print quality on coated and glossy paper improves significantly. Epson includes a fairly inflexible watermark feature that doesn't allow you to choose a font, provides only a few color options, and doesn't give you precise control over the watermark's position on the page. The 880's paper-support tray sits in slots instead of clipping to the printer, so it falls off with little provocation.
WHAT ELSE: When you're not printing, you can fold the output tray flush against the printer to liberate a few inches of space on your desk. The 880's ink costs run an inexpensive 3.3 cents per page of black text and 11.6 cents per page of color graphics.
BEST USE: This might be a good inexpensive printer for simple jobs that need to be turned out quickly, but other choices produce better graphics.

WHAT'S HOT: It wasn't long ago when $100 bought the kind of printer that holds only one ink cartridge at a time--either black or color--forcing the user to switch cartridges for different kinds of print jobs and producing mediocre color under the best of circumstances. Even today only a few dual-cartridge models drop below $100. The Epson Stylus Color 777 is the newest member of that select group. The 777 whips its closest competitor, Lexmark's Z32, on graphics speed, printing 1 page per minute to the Z32's 0.3 ppm, and the Epson prints text at 2.9 ppm, significantly faster. It also comes with Corel's vast photo-projects package, Print House 2000, and it features a paper support that clips on tight to the printer so it won't fall off when you bump it.
WHAT'S NOT: The Stylus Color 777 costs $29 more than the Lexmark Z32, so if you're shopping on a tight budget, you might prefer the savings. The 777 prints solid black text but with very rough edges; gray-scale images appear grainy, while color graphics have muddy, flat colors but acceptable detail. Because the 777 has only two status lights on the case, it uses combinations of flashes to indicate error conditions and maintenance requirements; you'll have to keep the manual at hand to interpret them. Also, the 777's ink costs rank very high: A page of black text costs about 9.9 cents, and a page of color graphics costs about 15.8 cents.
WHAT ELSE: Like the Epson Stylus Color 880, the 777 has an output tray that folds up flush to provide more elbow room when you're not printing. Also like the 880, the 777 has an extensive online manual.

WHAT'S HOT: At $179, the Stylus Photo 825 is one of Epson's least expensive photo printers, and it includes a control panel for printing images from your camera's flash memory. The 825's menus let you create layouts with multiple images, add frames and borders, sharpen and brighten images, and even print photos with an old-time sepia look. The 825's six-ink design helps it render highly detailed photos, with colors that are accurate and attractive.
WHAT'S NOT: The 825's monochrome ink cartridges cost $25 and its color cartridges cost $20; text pages run approximately 4.6 each, and color pages are 13.6 cents apiece. The 825 prints text slowly, at 2.5 ppm; we rated its text quality as only Fair in our tests.
WHAT ELSE: The Stylus Photo 825 comes with an adapter for CompactFlash, Memory Stick, MultiMediaCard, and Secure Digital media; if your camera uses a different format, you'll have to provide your own PC Card adapter. Epson Launches Photo R800

Japanese printer company Epson launched the Stylus Photo R800 inkjet printer in the local market.
The printer won the 2004 Technical Technical Imaging Press Association (TIPA) European Photo and Imaging Award for Best Inkjet Photo Printer. It's equipped with UltraChrome Hi-Gloss inks and Gloss Optimiser features.
'The Epson Stylus Photo R800 is designed especially for the forward-looking professional and serious, advanced amateur,' said G Suresh, Senior Business Manager, Consumer Products, Epson India.
'It combines long-lasting pigment ink capable of genuine glossy color for archival photo printouts. It is also the first printer to incorporate two new ink colors (Red and Blue), giving it a color gamut that is incredibly high for any inkjet printer,' he added.
The UltraChrome Hi-Gloss ink has a denser transparent resin encasing the color pigment than in previous inks. The company said that this produces a smooth, super-fine finish with reflective characteristics.
The ink set includes eight individual cartridges. The printer allows the user to keep the Photo Black and Matte Black ink cartridges in the printer at all times and the printer driver determines which black ink to use based on paper type selection.
The Gloss Optimiser keeps the surface even, in this case by filling up the spaces where there is no ink laid down.
Among its other highlights the Stylus Photo R800 allows customization of CD and DVD label designs. It can also print continuous strips of roll paper in widths of 100mm and 210mm so as not to mar the beauty of a panoramic shot.
