Important Printer Buying Tip:
ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is
(150 pages) x ($28) = $21
      200 pages

Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

    PCMAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
At $849.99 (direct), the Epson Stylus Photo R2400 obviously isn't for everyone. But if you're a serious photographer who isn't satisfied with anything less than an SLR camera and a collection of bayonet-mount lenses for taking your photos, you probably won't settle for anything less than the R2400 when it comes to printing them.

The R2400 is big for an ink jet printer, weighing 34 pounds and measuring 9.1 by 24.2 by 12.6 inches (HWD)—large enough to print output up to 13 by 44 inches, using roll paper or cut sheets. You won't find a PictBridge connector or memory card slots, on the grounds that anyone interested in this level of photo printer will want the quality you can get only by printing from a graphics program.

Setup is standard, except that the printer has more ink colors than most, each in its own cartridge. The new wrinkle for UltraChrome K3 technology is the K3. K is the usual abbreviation for black; K3 indicates three levels of black, which is printer-geek speak for black plus two shades of gray.

More precisely, the K3 inks include two shades of gray plus a choice of black ink—with a matte black for plain and matte papers and a photo black for glossy papers. The printer comes with both types of ink, but has room for only one at a time, so you have to swap the black cartridges as needed. This could be annoying if you need to switch very often. But we expect that most people will use the R2400 as a dedicated photo printer with their preferred type of paper, so they won't run into this issue.

The full set of inks in the printer at any given time includes the three shades of black, cyan, yellow, magenta, light cyan, and light magenta. The payoff is superb photo output—for both color and black-and-white pictures.

Compared with other printers with an excellent rating for photos, most notably the HP PhotoSmart 8750 Professional Photo Printer and the Canon i9900 Photo Printer, the R2400 is first among equals. It has no flaws worth mentioning, and the output is better than the competition in ways that translate to more neutral grays for black–and-white images and more natural shading in things like faces in color photos.

There's room to argue over issues of taste in comparing closely matched output. What isn't up for dispute is that the R2400 output will last a long time. Tests by Wilhelm Imaging Research, using Epson UltraSmooth Fine Art paper displayed under glass, yielded a lightfastness rating of 108 years for color photos and 205 years for black-and-white photos. Based on the same tests, silver-halide photos last roughly 20 years.

The R2400 photos are also smudgeproof. We took one fresh from the printer, ran water over it, and rubbed the surface with no noticeable effect. Photos from the HP PhotoSmart 8750 have a similar decades-long lightfastness rating, but they aren't waterproof or smudgeproof.

Although the R2400 isn't really intended as an all-purpose printer, you can use it as one. We rated the output at the high end of very good for graphics, which means it's more than good enough for business use, and of high enough quality for graphic artists to consider. We saw just a sprinkling of minor issues, including a tendency for thin lines to be so thin that they almost disappeared. Text was at the high end of good, with most fonts easily readable at 5 points or smaller, but one stylized font needing 10 points and another needing 12.

Performance on our business applications suite was slow, with a total 29 minutes 9 seconds. For photos, which are more relevant, the R2400 averaged 1:17 for each 4-by-6 print and 2:38 for each 8-by-10. That's nowhere near as fast as the Canon i9900's 30 seconds for each 4-by-6 and 1:05 for each 8-by-10, but considering how long the photos last, we think that they are worth waiting for.

The combination of quality and long-lived output is enough to make the R2400 our new Editors' Choice.
