Important Printer Buying Tip:
ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge.
For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is
(150 pages) x ($28) = $21
      200 pages

Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits.

    PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
With its seven ink cartridges, six colors, two-picoliter ink droplet printing system, and advanced paper options, the Epson Stylus Photo 960 ($350 street) is not for everyone. But if you're a serious photo hobbyist and want a serious photo printer, read on.

The Stylus Photo 960 offers a maximum resolution of 2,880-by-1,440. Its seven-cartridge setup holds magenta, light magenta, cyan, light cyan, and yellow ink, plus two black cartridges that work in tandem when printing text, resulting in faster than usual (for a photo printer) performance. The 960 comes with a front paper feeder, a roll paper holder (for 4-inch and 8.3-inch wide glossy photo paper rolls), and an automatic paper cutter. The roll paper feeder and paper cutter work well, but you can't leave them on when printing cut sheets. Oddly (for a photo printer), the 960 lacks slots for your camera's removable storage media.

We found the 960 to be fairly speedy (we tested via the USB port). High-quality 300-dpi, 8-by-10 prints (on various Epson premium photo papers) that took 12 to 15 minutes with the large-format Epson Stylus Photo 2200 took 4 to 5 minutes with the 960. But this is not the best choice for an all-around printer, as producing text is pretty slow. A 43-page, mixed text and graphics sample took nearly 18 minutes to print.

But you're not buying this printer for its speed, let alone for printing text. The 960 creates very-high-resolution prints with gorgeous color. With the right digital image, there's no telling this printer's output from a traditional photo, making it a good choice for advanced amateur photographers and hobbyists still on a budget.
