PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
With good or better quality for text and graphics, along with surprisingly good speed for business applications, the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 ($550 street) isn't necessarily strictly for photos. Even so, you can easily justify using it as a dedicated photo printer, as it gives true photo-quality output at sizes up to 13 by 44 inches.
The R1800 is similar in many ways to the Epson Stylus Photo R800, including an easy approach to printing on optical discs. It's designed for paper up to 13 inches wide, which means it's also a big printer, at 9.1 by 24.2 by 12.6 inches (HWD). It uses the same eight-cartridge ink system as the R800: the usual cyan, yellow, and magenta; red and blue to widen the color gamut; and two versions of black, so it can use black ink on all media, rather than combining colors to create a composite black. The eighth cartridge adds clear gloss to areas with less ink, for a consistent level of sheen.
Epson says that photos will last as long as 100 to 200 years when displayed under glass, depending on the type of paper, based on tests by Wilhelm Imaging Research. By comparison, silver-halide photos last roughly 25 years. In addition to excellent photo quality, the R1800 offers very good graphics, which is a high rating for an ink jet. Text is at the high end of good, with most fonts easily readable at four points, but one highly stylized font needed 12 points.
Performance on our business applications suite was faster than most standard ink jets, with a total of 16 minutes 13 seconds. We've clocked only five faster ink jets, and the R1800's time was within 25 seconds of four of them. The current Editors' Choice, the Canon i9900, was far slower, at 25:19. The R1800's speed for photos is good, but nowhere near as impressive, with an average 1:18 for each 4-by-6 (compared with 30 seconds for the i9900) and 2:42 for each 8-by-10 (compared with 1:05 for the i9900).
The i9900's photo speed still gives it the edge as our Editors' Choice among photo printers. But if you also want to print text and graphics on a regular basis or print on optical discs, the R1800 may be the better match for your needs.
