Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

Product Description for Epson 4000 (From the Manufacturer, Epson)
Compact yet powerful, the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 desktop inkjet printer features the latest (2004) inkjet, print-head, and printer-engine technologies in order to meet the needs of the most demanding graphics professionals. With Epson's UltraChrome Ink technology, the Stylus Pro 4000 will produce archival-quality prints with high color fidelity while providing consistently stable colors designed to significantly outperform standard-dye inks.
To maximize the use of its ink technology, Epson developed a unique print head capable of handling eight separate ink cartridges simultaneously. This lets the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 handle both photo-black and matte-black inks at the same time so it can maximize the black density on virtually any media type. Even better, the printer's high-performance, one-inch-wide print head produces an astonishing resolution of 2,880 x 1,440 dpi, setting a new Epson standard for quality and speed.
Handling virtually any media type in roll or cut sheets up to 17 inches wide, the Stylus Pro 4000's built-in high-capacity paper tray holds up to 250 sheets of plain letter-sized paper or up to 50 sheets of 17-by-22-inch photographic media. Choose from four different ways to load media, including a front-loading straight-through path for media up to 1.5 mm posterboard. A built-in automatic media cutter greatly simplifies roll printing.
What about print speed? For graphics and prepress proofing, the printer can produce everyday production-quality 13-by-19-inch prints in 2 minutes, 23 seconds and contract-quality proofs in just 7 minutes, 49 seconds. For professional photography, the Stylus Pro 4000 produces photo-lab quality 8-by-10-inch prints in 3 minutes, 48 seconds and 16-by-20-inch prints in 10 minutes, 25 seconds. And, for CAD and GIS, you'll get draft-quality 17-by-22-inch prints in 90 seconds and photo-quality 17-by-22-inch prints in 5 minutes, 58 seconds.
Enjoy the benefits of two user-exchangeable ink modes (photographic or dual CMYK). The photographic ink mode is ideal for any photographic or graphic design project where image quality is important. It uses cyan, light cyan, magenta, light magenta, yellow, photo black, light black, and matte black. The dual CMYK ink mode takes advantage of Epson's Matte Black ink technology to produce outstanding photographic prints on plain paper. It uses two of each primary color to deliver speeds up to 98 percent faster than the photographic ink mode. Plus, exclusive "light black" ink significantly improves the printer's gray balance while eliminating color casts and improving the midtones and highlights for smooth transitions.

PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 ($1,800 street) is far and away the best, fastest, most versatile printer in its class, capable of producing superb exhibition-quality photo prints, graphics arts proofs, posters, and just about any other output one could possibly want. With a 17-inch-wide carriage, the printer will barely fit on your desk, but who wouldn't sacrifice desktop real estate for this gem?
At 14 by 33 by 30 inches and 83.7 pounds, the Stylus Pro 4000 is an intelligently designed, rock-solid device that can output over 20,000 8.5- by 14-inch prints—more than two years of 24/7 operation—before requiring factory servicing, which is as robust as its closest competitors, the Canon imagePrograf W2200 and the HP DesignJet 120nr, and head-and-shoulders above lower-end printers. Although large and boxy, the unit allows for easy, unimpeded access to the print engine, ink cartridges, and paper paths. Unlike its competitors, the Stylus Pro 4000 can accommodate virtually any type of media up to 17 inches wide, including rolls, sheets up to 17 by 22, and card stock up to 1.5 mm thick, enabling full-bleed borderless printing, as well as printing on both sides without damaging the media. Connectivity is via USB 2.0, or FireWire. You can also add 10/100 Ethernet connectivity
Epson's all-new, auto-aligning 1-inch-wide piezoelectric printhead produces a maximum resolution of 2,880-by-1,440 dpi, with variable droplets as small as 3.5 picoliters—higher resolution and smaller droplets than the Canon or the HP models. Although not true continuous-tone output, the dispersion pattern is so tight that discerning individual dots with the naked eye is impossible. It uses the same seven-color, high-capacity, waterproof UltraChrome ink cartridges as the Epson 7600 and 9600 pro printers but accommodates eight rather than seven cartridges, permitting the Stylus Pro 4000 to switch between photo black and matte black automatically, rather than requiring you to replace the black manually to match the type output.
Setup and installation are straightforward and easy. Epson provides a basic driver and 24 media profiles; its optional network RIP ($299) will be available in Q1 2004. The printer is designed for maximum workflow and is both fast and quiet. A full-bleed 16- by 20-inch color photo takes approximately 10 minutes 30 seconds, twice as fast as the Epson Stylus Pro 7600. The cost for ink and paper is about the same.
Image quality is outstanding, with a very wide color gamut, great detail, true blacks, and excellent, accurate color. The level of archivability (a print's ability to retain its image) and colorfastness (the print's resistance to light) are quite high: Wilhelm Imaging Research rates the colorfastness of the Stylus Pro 4000's new media at 85 years for color and more than 100 years for black-and-white.
As a result of Epson's famed reputation for producing long-lasting and high-quality documents, graphics and photographs printed from the Stylus Pro 7600 and 9600 are often sold as works of art. The Stylus Pro 4000's output is even better and sets a new standard for professional graphics printing.
