The Epson Stylus Color 900 ink-jet printer is Epson's fastest ink-jet printer, pumping out crisp, sharp black text and eye-pleasing color at speeds of 12 and 10 ppm (pages per minute), respectively. The Epson Stylus Color 900 also gives you 1,440 x 720 dpi output while producing the smallest ink droplets ever, a minuscule 3 picoliters each. This small ink droplet promises to produce more intense highlights, sharper details, and more realistic skin tones. This printer also includes Epson's PerfectPicture Imaging System. This built-in system combines Epson's award-winning Micro Piezo technology, AcuPhoto Halftoning, and expertly formulated, quick-drying inks.
The Epson Stylus Color 900 enables you to print on most media, including standard paper, bond paper, transparencies, envelopes, photo paper, and even iron-on transfers. Maximum print load is up to 5,000 pages per month. The paper cartridge can hold up to 100 sheets input and 10 sheets output at a time. Compatible with both Macintosh and PC platforms, the Epson Stylus Color 900 offers a variety of connectivity options, although the printer cord is sold separately. This printer is covered by a one-year limited warranty and Epson's Overnight Exchange warranty, in which Epson ships you a temporary printer to use while yours is being repaired.

Epson's new Stylus Color 900 boasts the most photo-realistic output of the four printers in this review-but you'll have to wait for it. At the printer's highest-resolution setting (1440x720dpi), our test photo took 10 minutes, 27 seconds-the slowest in this group. Still, it's worth the wait: Even the subtlest nuances of an image-such as the tiles on a distant roof and continuous skin tones-are reproduced perfectly. If you're in a hurry, try the lower-resolution Photo Paper mode, which delivered a slightly grainier but still excellent version of the photo in 2 minutes, 34 seconds. Both printouts looked paler than those from the other printers, especially in areas with a lot of red, but the detail was impeccable.
Text output is fast, roughly neck and neck with the HP DeskJet 895Cse for tops in this group. The solid, dark text was legible and quite suitable for business use, but it showed slight speckling around the edges and was not as crisp as the DeskJet 895Cse's.
The Stylus Color 900's drivers provide constant on-screen monitoring of ink levels during printing, so you're not likely to be surprised by an empty cartridge. The printer is rather noisy when feeding a new page, but nearly silent while printing.
You can connect the Stylus Color 900 to parallel, serial or USB ports. And you can pick your own software bundle, choosing two programs from a group that includes Lotus Mail/Freelance/Organizer, Corel Print Office, Ventura Publisher 7, CorelDRAW Select Edition and more. PostScript Level 3 support-excellent for complex graphics and type rendering-is optional.

WHAT'S HOT: If you really need speed and don't mind shelling out nearly $400, you might like Epson's Stylus Color 900. Printing text at 6.8 ppm, it beats all the others here handily, and it tears through graphics as fast as some models print text. The 900 comes with parallel, USB, and serial ports to accommodate either a PC or a Macintosh. And if the printer breaks down, don't worry: Epson's overnight-exchange warranty covers you. It's the only such policy among the printers here.
WHAT'S NOT: The $399 price, first of all. That kind of money could buy you a fast, reliable monochrome laser. Second, the 900's paper input tray sits precariously in its slot and has the annoying habit of falling off when you adjust it. Lastly, for anyone working in tight quarters, the printer's space requirements may prove a problem: With output trays extended, it stretches 25 inches from back to front.
WHAT ELSE: The Stylus Color 900 pumps out good text quality, and graphics look adequate, if a little bit grainy. Its printheads are permanent; the only consumable you'll have to pay for is ink.
BEST USE: Take this one to the office. With its high price and great speed, it'll feel like overkill in the home.
