WHAT'S HOT: The Dell M5200n's $999 price tag makes this one of the least expensive lasers printers boasting corporate amenities. The M5200n is essentially a relabeled Lexmark T630n, so we weren't surprised that it's fast--we clocked it printing text at a fiery 22.9 pages per minute. The M5200n produced top-quality black text, and it fared well on narrow parallel lines; it even managed to print adequate gray-scale photos--a tough challenge for monochrome lasers--even though the pics weren't exactly attractive. It comes with built-in ethernet and a 500-sheet paper tray, as well as a 100-sheet auxiliary tray, so your office can keep both plain paper and letterhead loaded. For system administrators, the driver has an account-tracking feature and a tool for configuring driver settings and distributing them to users.
WHAT'S NOT: Dell's cryptic instructions for network installation prompted us to set the printer up in an unorthodox manner. Consequently, the M5200n was very slow in our first round of tests. Recognizing that those results were inconsistent with the performance of its Lexmark twin, we reconfigured the network setup and retested, giving us much better results. Also, the driver supports watermarks and overlays, but only users with sysadmin privileges can create them, which means either your sysadmin will be overwhelmed with busywork or your end users will have too much control over the printer.
WHAT ELSE: Dell sells a full suite of optional equipment to expand the M5200n's paper-handling capabilities, including a $249 duplexer, a $229 envelope feeder, and a 500-sheet feeder that costs $229 and can be stacked four-high to boost total paper capacity to 2600 sheets. Dell's estimated price per page for toner is modest, ranging from 1.05 cents per page to 1.41 cents per page, depending on which cartridge you buy.
UPSHOT: If your business needs high-throughput printing, the M5200n would be a good fit.

With its 50-page ADF and standalone fax capability—along with copy, scan, and print features—the Dell Personal All-In-One Printer A960 easily qualifies as a full-function AIO. But it doesn't win any contests for speed or quality.
On our tests, the A960 printer was relatively slow for both test suites. It completed the business applications suite in 36 minutes 1 second, compared with 20:24 for the Brother MFC-3420c, which offers similar features for the same price. In addition to the faster overall speed, the Brother unit beat the A960 on 10 of the 13 individual tests. For photos, the A960 was somewhat faster than the MFC-3420c, averaging 3:45 for each 4-by-6 and about 8:51 for each 8-by-10.
Dell A960 printer earned a rating of good for both text and graphics quality and very good for photos. Here again, the Brother MFC-3420c did better for business applications and worse for photos, with a very good rating for text and graphics but a little short of very good for photos. More important, Dell A960 is the second most expensive printer in this group to run, at 5.2 cents per monochrome page on our tests and 17.8 cents per color page.

The bottom line: Given its poor performance on our tests and its costly ink consumption, we can't recommend the Dell A920 to any category of user.

Dell's All-in-One 922 uses the same engine, drivers, and case as the Lexmark X5270, and not surprisingly the two models performed almost identically in our tests. Recently Dell dropped the price on 922 from $119 to $79.
Though the Dell printed graphics at a slightly below-average 1.0 ppm, it issued text quickly at a rate of 7.7 ppm. Among the inkjet MFPs we tested this month, the 922 turned in the fastest scan time on a 4-by-5-inch photo at 100 dpi--just 15 seconds (the average was 22 seconds).
The 922 printed text that looked dark though slightly jagged, yet was still legible down to very small sizes. Line art looked fairly crisp, though narrow parallel lines printed too thick and overlapped a lot. Color graphics on plain paper looked faded and too orange, though blues appeared realistic. On glossy paper, photos still appeared too orange, but other colors seemed more realistic, and they retained detail well. Copies of a text document were fairly sharp and earned a score of Good, as did the copies of most other inkjet MFPs we tested; copies of plain-paper graphics, which we didn't formally score, looked faded.
The case is small and sleek, but the lid to the flatbed scanner feels flimsy and light. The console offerings are bare-bones; for example, it lacks an LCD panel where you can set the number of copies, change the copy quality settings, and so on. Next to the flatbed scanner, however, there are buttons for initiating scans and making copies. Dell includes Lexmark's well-designed All-in-One Center, a driver that allows you to make copies; send a fax from your PC; and scan to a specific application, file, e-mail, or fax. Based on your selection, the software sets the resolution: You indicate whether you are scanning a photo, text, or magazine page, and then tell it whether the scan will be printed, faxed, or viewed on screen. You can also use the accompanying software to edit your images or scan text to the included optical character recognition application, Abbyy Fine Reader 5. Also, a print status box shows how much ink is left in the cartridges every time you print.
Upshot: This inexpensive MFP will fit well in a home or dorm room where fast and easy operation is important and image quality is secondary.
