The $149 Dell Photo All-In-One Printer 942 has the same small footprint as the $79 Dell 922 we've reviewed previously. But you also get an attractive 2.5-inch color LCD for viewing menus, previewing images, and performing simple edits (such as cropping). And while printing, the 942 also provides a graphical display of the ink levels.
Dell includes two media slots that read all the major formats (though, strangely, not XD Picture Cards larger than 512MB). You can choose the images you want to print by browsing them on the LCD--no need to go to your PC. The 942's index prints are basic grids of images, unlike the attractive layouts from Canon, Epson, and HP models that you can use to produce full prints. Thanks to its fast USB 2.0 connection, the 942 quickly uploads images to your PC from a memory card. A PictBridge port lets you print directly from any compatible digital camera.
Though the buttons on the control panel look cheap, they're quite efficient to use. A mode button lets you switch between photo, fax, copy, and scan tasks, indicated by a set of four LEDs. The 942 doesn't have a built-in fax, but you can send scanned documents via your PC's fax modem.
With the optional photo cartridge installed, the 942 produced attractive photos on glossy paper; however, the prints looked highly saturated and less sharp than those from many other MFPs we tested. On plain paper, dithering was visible in photos, and colors--especially skin tones--didn't look realistic. Our text and line art prints looked nice and dark, thanks in part to the pigment black ink. But prints showed excessive narrow horizontal banding, and lettering looked smudged. Text printed at an admirable 7.5 pages per minute, and our test photo was done in 97 seconds, much faster than the 127-second average for the nine MFPs in our test group. Color graphics printed at a below-average 1.4 ppm, however.
The 942's color scanning was particularly impressive, reproducing tones faithfully, and extracting plenty of detail. The unit's scan speed was average, though its copy speed of 3.6 ppm was significantly better than the 2.9-ppm average.
Dell based the 942's software driver on Lexmark's well-designed All-In-One Center, revealing this MFP's origins. The large package of software includes the Abbyy FineReader 5.0 Sprint Plus OCR application for converting scanned documents into editable text. Unfortunately, Dell supplies Jasc's Paint Shop Pro image editor only as a trial version.
Upshot: The Dell 942 is a good buy because of its low price, ease of use, and high scan quality, but you'll have to live with lackluster print quality.

WHAT'S HOT: The Dell M5200n's $999 price tag makes this one of the least expensive lasers printers boasting corporate amenities. The M5200n is essentially a relabeled Lexmark T630n, so we weren't surprised that it's fast--we clocked it printing text at a fiery 22.9 pages per minute. The M5200n produced top-quality black text, and it fared well on narrow parallel lines; it even managed to print adequate gray-scale photos--a tough challenge for monochrome lasers--even though the pics weren't exactly attractive. It comes with built-in ethernet and a 500-sheet paper tray, as well as a 100-sheet auxiliary tray, so your office can keep both plain paper and letterhead loaded. The control panel's LCD has hierarchical menus, and its clearly labeled buttons always correspond to choices in the menu commands. Operating the printer is easy, but if you get lost, the thorough though somewhat rambling printed and on-screen documentation offer guidance. Dell's driver includes some useful features for end users, such as a print-and-hold setting that lets you store a confidential job in the printer's memory until you're ready to collect the output. For system administrators, the driver has an account-tracking feature and a tool for configuring driver settings and distributing them to users.
WHAT'S NOT: Dell's cryptic instructions for network installation prompted us to set the printer up in an unorthodox manner. Consequently, the M5200n was very slow in our first round of tests. Recognizing that those results were inconsistent with the performance of its Lexmark twin, we reconfigured the network setup and retested, giving us much better results. Another complaint: The driver shows you duplexing and booklet-printing settings, but they're disabled unless you install the optional duplexer. We think Dell should have allowed for the occasional manual job. Also, the driver supports watermarks and overlays, but only users with sysadmin privileges can create them, which means either your sysadmin will be overwhelmed with busywork or your end users will have too much control over the printer.
WHAT ELSE: Dell sells a full suite of optional equipment to expand the M5200n's paper-handling capabilities, including a $249 duplexer, a $229 envelope feeder, and a 500-sheet feeder that costs $229 and can be stacked four-high to boost total paper capacity to 2600 sheets. Dell's estimated price per page for toner is modest, ranging from 1.05 cents per page to 1.41 cents per page, depending on which cartridge you buy.
UPSHOT: If your business needs high-throughput printing, the M5200n would be a good fit.

The bad: Lousy output quality; slow print speeds; pricey ink consumption; requires separate fax-modem; works with only Windows 2000 and XP.
