Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The Dell Photo All-In-One Printer 942 is for people who want both a photo printer and an all in one. On the photo printer side, you get the ability to print directly from memory cards (CompactFlash Type I and II, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital, SmartMedia, xD-Picture Card) and PictBridge cameras. It also has a 2.5-inch color LCD that lets you preview your pictures before printing. On the all-in-one side, you get a printer, copier, and scanner. There's no fax or automatic document feeder, but you'll find a utility that lets you scan and fax using your computer's modem.
Setup is essentially identical to that of any other USB printer. Like many photo printers, the 942 can use either a black and tricolor cartridge for four-color printing or a photo and tricolor cartridge for six-color printing. On our tests the 942 matched the Lexmark P6250 as one of the few ink jet AIOs available that did well across the board. That's not surprising, since we suspect that the Dell entry is sourced from Lexmark. Total time on our business applications suite was 20 minutes 54 seconds, essentially a tie with the P6250's 20:57, with little difference between the two printers on any given test. For photos, similarly, it averaged 2:31 for each 4-by-6 and 5:36 for each 8-by-10, once again essentially tying with the P6250.
Output ratings were also similar to the ratings for the P6250. We rated it at the high end of fair for text, good for graphics, and at the high end of good for photos on our official tests using six ink colors. More interesting, as with the P6250, it did better on photos with four-color printing, scoring very good on supplemental tests. The 942 software isn't as focused on ease of use as the P6250, but for many users the lower price will make it more appealing.
