Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

CNET.com Editors' rating: 6.5 Good
The good: Low price; prints great text and good photos; compact design; helpful software; digital camera card slots.
The bad: Poor color scanning; so-so grayscale scanning; small ink tanks; no color LCD or PictBridge port to preview photos; no fax engine.
The bottom line: The MP130 is a low-cost, personal all-in-one with good printing skills but iffy scan quality

You'll have fantastic prints delivered into your hands just minutes after you snapped the shot.
Color resolution is as high as 4,800 x 1,200 dpi, with black resolution up to 600 x 600 dpi. Canon iP1600 Street Price: $41.00 - $70.00
PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
Until we saw the Canon Pixma iP1600, we thought that the HP Deskjet 3940 Color Inkjet Printer was the epitome of the "giving away the razor to sell the blades" marketing strategy. Subtract the price of the ink cartridges that come with the 3940, and the printer itself is only $20. But the iP1600 makes the 3940 look expensive. The iP1600's two ink cartridges cost $44.98 direct from Canon. Subtract that from the $49.99 direct price for the printer, and iP1600 itself is only $5.01. Call it the world's first disposable printer.
Also call it an impressive value at the price, suitable for home or home office, with reasonably high-quality output for home and business needs and impressively good speeds for its price. In our tests, the cartridges lasted noticeably longer than the cartridges for the 3940—or for the Canon iP1500, which the iP1600 replaces. We needed three sets of cartridges to complete our test suites for the 3940 and three for the iP1500. With the iP1600, we needed only two sets.
At 9.8 by 17.1 by 6.5 inches (HWD), the iP1600 will fit just about anywhere. But it lacks an output tray, so unless you want pages to fall to the floor, you have to keep it far back from the edge of your desk. You also have to keep the space in front of the printer clear so it can serve as the output tray. Setup is otherwise standard for a four-color printer. Install the black and tricolor cartridges, run the installation program, and connect to the computer using a USB cable—which you'll have to buy separately.
Compared with other ink jets that sell for $100 or less, the iP1600 quality ratings are a little below average for text, typical for graphics, and among the best for photos. Two of our highly stylized test fonts required 12 points for easy readability, which is what held the rating down to good, and means you may have a problem printing things such as greeting cards that have stylized fonts, depending on the paper you're using. But the iP1600 can handle standard documents easily enough. The rest of the fonts were easily readable at 5 points or smaller.
Graphics were at the high end of good, which makes them more than adequate for schoolwork or for printing things at home to bring into the office for internal use. But they fell short of the quality you would want for an important customer, with banding in default mode, a tendency to lose thin lines, and a tendency for full-page graphics to make our standard test paper curl.
Photos earned a very good rating, with true photo quality for most individual images. In our tests, we saw several problems printing in monochrome that we didn't see with color photos, including banding, relatively obvious dithering, and slight posterization, with sudden changes in shading in areas that should change gradually. We consider these problems minor, however, and most people should find the iP1600 suitable for printing snapshots, with the possible exception of monochrome photos. On the plus side, with Canon's new generation of ink and paper, the company claims a 100-year lifetime for photos kept in an archival-quality photo album in plastic sleeves, or 30 years for framed photos behind glass—claims that Canon has never made before.
The iP1600's performance (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software, was surprisingly good. Total time on our business applications suite was 21 minutes 52 seconds, compared with 33:02 for the HP 3940, and 54:24 for the Epson Stylus C66. Photos were also fast, averaging 1:58 for each 4-by-6 and 4:01 for each 8-by-10. In comparison, the 3940 took 4:57 for each 4-by-6 and 12:29 for each 8-by-10.
These times don't win any speed records for ink jets in general, but they make the iP1600 faster than any other printer selling for less than $100. The combination of performance and output quality makes the iP1600 the printer of choice on a $50 budget—and the most impressive $5 printer we expect to see any time soon.

Detailed Specs (Canon PIXMA iP6600D):
Product Description for Canon iP6600D (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
The PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer is a photo-printing powerhouse, with incredible quality and high end convenience. It delivers an amazing resolution of up to 9,600 x 2,400 dpi, for detail and clarity that will surpass your expectations. To achieve this, Canon Full-photolitho-graphy Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a next-generation 3,072-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as one picoliter. Plus, we've added high intensity photo cyan and photo magenta to the conventional four inks, to increase the accuracy of color values.
The high performance doesn't stop there. The PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer can produce a beautiful photo lab quality 4" x 6" borderless print in approximately 46 seconds. Plus, its advanced paper handling provides you with several smart printing options. The dual paper path allows you to keep two different paper types always loaded and ready to print. You can even create two-sided photos or special photo albums with select Canon media.
With the extra-large 3.5" LCD color viewer and control panel, you can evaluate and enhance the images on your compatible memory card before printing! For viewing, just insert the card into one of the built-in card slots and select the images. As needed, the PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer will automatically correct for red eye, improve sharpness and enhance the light values on your subjects' faces. Or, you can fine tune the image yourself using the easy control panel. Then, print directly from the memory card! You can also print directly from a PictBridge compatible digital camera or DV camcorder.
The Canon ChromaLife100 system combines the PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer's FINE print head technology and newly developed inks with select Canon photo papers, with results rivaling that of many conventional photos. And with the new smart LED ink tanks, your LED lamp flashes when ink is running low, and flashes even faster when nearing empty.
What's in the Box:
PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer, iP6600D print head, power cord, FINE cartridges: CL-51 color, CL- 52 photo, documentation kit, easy setup instructions, Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy for Borderless Printing 4" x 6" sample pack
Canon iP6600D Street Price: $169.00 - $212.00
CNET.com Editors' review:
A six-color photo printer that uses the same 1-picoliter-droplet FINE printhead as the Pixma iP5000, the Pixma iP6600D pairs the printhead with Canon's new ChromaLife 100 ink set. The inks are designed so that when they fade--as all inks inevitably do--each primary theoretically fades at the same rate, in order to preserve the hues in the photograph. Dual paper trays, a 3.5-inch LCD plus media card slots, and IrDA camera-phone printing support are the highlights of this model; Bluetooth is optional.

Why bother waiting for the photo lab when you can print images that are just as good--or maybe better--at home? The Canon PIXMA iP4200 combines five-color printing with a 1,856-nozzle print head capable of delivering superfine 1-picoliter ink droplets. The result is gorgeously clean, sharp prints delivered into your hands just minutes after you snapped the shot.
Color resolution is as high as 9,600 x 2,400 dpi, with black resolution up to 600 x 600 dpi. Improved ink technology supplies rich black text that offers exceptional resistance to smudges--it even holds up to highlighter pens. (All reported speeds are maximums. Actual speeds will vary.)

Canon iP4200 Street Price: $69.00 - $140.00
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
The Canon Pixma iP4200 prints high-quality glossy photos quickly, but it's just as well suited for printing office documents. For $130, you get strong black text, double-sided printing, and dual paper trays. In our tests the iP4200 printed documents at breakneck speed, but the quality of its plain-paper output barely improved on that of its predecessor, the iP4000.
The iP4200's silver plastic case feels solid and looks less boxy than other recent Canon models. A direct-print port lets you print straight from a PictBridge-compatible digital camera, though--like most other inkjets these days--the iP4200 doesn't have a media card slot.
The iP4200 posted the best overall speed numbers of the five inkjets we tested in its group. Text printed at 6.9 pages per minute--one of the fastest rates we've seen from an inkjet--And plain-paper graphics emerged at a very fast 2.5 ppm. When printed at best-quality settings, our test photo emerged in just 56 seconds.
Along with the 150-sheet-capacity paper tray in the printer's base, there is an upright feeder at the back with a equivalent capacity; it's a convenient arrangement if you frequently switch between two types of media, such as plain paper and photo paper, or between different sizes of photo stock. A switch on the front lets you choose the default paper source, or you can select which one to use from the software driver. The built-in duplexer lets you create double-sided prints, but you'll be sacrificing speed for paper economy: The iP4200 waits about 15 seconds for the first side to dry before sucking it back in to print the other side.
This model's print engine resembles its predecessor's, relying on five inks from individual cartridges. You get dye-based ink for the regular colors and for the black used in photos. The pigment-based black ink used for plain paper documents comes in a larger (and more economical) cartridge.
In our print quality tests, color photos exhibited sharp details, even in areas of shadow, with plenty of contrast. Skin tones, however, appeared a little too vivid and had an orange cast. Our grayscale photo printed a little on the dark side, but showed good contrast and sharp details overall; skin tones in this print could have looked smoother.
Because it's a printer with office-oriented features, we expected the iP4000 to produce top-notch print quality on plain paper, but it fell a little short of this.
Though text appeared dark and solid, we noticed misaligned letters in rows generated from multiple sweeps of the print head. Similarly, vertical lines wavered in our line art test, and we also noticed some strange diagonal patterns in blocks of close horizontal lines. In color graphics printed on plain paper, the posterization looked very similar to what the $50 Canon Pixma iP1600 printed.
Upshot: The Pixma iP4200 delivers high-quality photos, snappy print speeds, and useful office features, but print quality on plain paper could be better..
