Among personal all-in-ones (which we define as any inexpensive AIO that lacks a network port), the Canon imageClass MF5550 ($500 street) is unusual in that it provides a built-in fax modem, a 50-sheet ADF, and even a network option. And it's one of the few in its class that offers good to excellent output quality across the board. This combination makes the MF5550 one of the better choices in personal monochrome laser AIOs.
The MF-5550 has a businesslike look, following the basic design of a scanner mounted on top of a printer with a gap between the two for printer output. The front panel includes an LCD-based menu system and a numeric keypad for faxing. Its 19.1- by 18.1- inch footprint makes it small enough to fit on a desk, but the 20-inch height may be a little imposing.
Setup is typical for an AIO that connects via USB 2.0. We were surprised to find no utility for giving copy commands from the computer and no fax driver to let you fax by printing to the driver. But the setup program installs Presto! PageManager, a document management program, which lets you scan a document and then drag the icon for the scanned file to a fax icon.
The MF5550 is a GDI printer, processing its print jobs at the computer. On our performance tests (using QualityLogic's testing software and equipment, it turned in respectable speeds but was slower than what we expected from its 19-page-per-minute (ppm) engine. For the two Adobe Acrobat files, for example, it took 38 and 37 seconds, compared with 28 and 27 seconds for the 19-ppm Panasonic Panafax UF-9000. And for the 50-page Microsoft Word text file, it took 2 minutes 59 seconds, a rate of less than 17 ppm. Still, the MF5550's total time for the business applications suite was a respectable 9:01.
The MF5550's output quality was excellent for text, with well over half of the fonts we test with easily readable at 4 points. We rated both its photo quality and its graphics quality as good, which puts it among the best for inexpensive monochrome laser printers and AIOS. In fact, the MF5550's overall quality rating is higher than for any other monochrome laser printer or AIO we have tested to date. And if output quality, rather than performance, is your primary concern, the MF5550's output and its features may well make it the AIO that belongs on your desk.

By most measures, the Canon Selphy DS700 Compact Photo Printer ($199.99 direct) is a typical ink jet-based dedicated photo printer, with the ability to print from PictBridge cameras, memory cards, and a PC. Its claim to fame is that instead of offering a built-in LCD, it can plug into a TV to let you preview your photos and work through the menus at large size. It even comes with a remote control, so you can give the commands from your easy chair.
More troublesome is that when you're not connected to a TV, your only choice for printing from memory cards is to print everything on the card. Ideally, we'd like to print an index sheet and then choose which photos to print.
As with most dedicated photo printers, maximum picture size is 4 by 6. Print speed is typical. We timed it at 1 minute 21 seconds to 1:39 for printing from a computer via USB, and roughly the same speeds for printing from a memory card or a Canon PowerShot S60 camera. Output quality is also typical, with a rating at the high end of very good.
Unfortunately, running costs are high. Canon claims 36 cents per print, based on 75 photos for the printer's single ink cartridge. In our tests, however, the cartridge lasted for only 38 prints, which would effectively double the cost per print. Consider the DS700 an acceptable choice, but we'd rather skip the TV connection and choose the Epson PictureMate, which has slower performance, but offers excellent quality, equally waterproof and smudge proof output, and a 29-cent cost per print.

The Canon S9000 Color Bubble Jet Printer is conventional ink jet, which is with two control panel buttons and one LED status light. It has the maximum resolution of 2,400 by 1,200 dpi.
This normal-width version of the wide-carriage Canon S9000 doesn't have fancy (or confusing) front-panel controls or direct-printing media slots.
The S9000 trailed by only 5 seconds overall, but it was almost three times as fast as the closest non-Canon printer, the Epson Stylus Photo 820. An affordable price, top speed, and great quality—what more do you want?
If you need the same quality and nearly identical class-leading speed but want to print on larger stock, choose the Canon S9000. The S9000 lets you print on 13- by 19-inch media. You won't find memory card slots, digital camera ports, or an LCD preview screen, but the S9000 is an easy-to-use photo printer that does its job well.
