Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

Detailed Specs (Canon S820):
Product Description for Canon S820 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
For photography fans, Canon offers the S820 Photo InkJet. It's ideal for printing colorful borderless photos directly from your desktop, as it requires no special papers to achieve refined color and detail. Plus, with both USB and parallel ports, it's a suitable companion for either your Mac or PC.
The S820 uses a six-color printing process with individual ink tanks (256 x 6 nozzles) to reduce waste. Just drop in the single color cartridge you need, without having to change the others. The inks are formulated to provide lightfast images lasting up to 25 years.
Print crisp clean black and color prints at 2,400 x 1,200 dpi on a wide variety of media, including letter size, legal size, A4, A5, photo cards, No. 10 or European envelopes and banner paper. Canon claims you can print an 8-by-10-inch photo on plain paper in under two minutes and a 4-by-6 in about one minute, both in photo quality.
The unit is designed for compactness and quiet running for users seeking high-quality photo printing. Software includes the printer drivers and a BJ Solution Disk CD-ROM. The latter includes PhotoRecord for Windows, ImageBrowser for Mac, and PhotoStitch for both Windows and Mac. Canon offers a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor.
MSRP for Canon S820: $299.00
Street Price: $90.00
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
WHAT'S HOT: Designed as a photo printer, the S820 uses six inks--the typical cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow, and black, plus light tints of cyan and magenta for fine-tuning colors. The result is a reasonably priced ($199) printer that produces breathtaking glossy photos with excellent detail, accurate colors, and lifelike textures. In addition, the S820 prints gray-scale graphics as duotones, so even on plain paper they convey depth and fine detail. Canon provides excellent printed and on-screen documentation covering every facet of setting up and using the printer.
WHAT'S NOT: The S820 didn't print well on plain paper: Narrow parallel lines smudged together, and color images looked foggy. Text, which prints at a very poky 2.2 pages per minute, looked rough and had a bluish-gray cast. Though that's no surprise in a photo printer, it limits the S820's versatility. Text looked better on glossy photo paper, but that isn't a typical printing scenario
WHAT ELSE: Text printing is economical, at 1.9 cents per page (based on Canon's estimates of yield per ink cartridge.) Canon's photo-oriented software bundle includes its own Easy-PhotoPrint, for creating documents that use photos, and PhotoStitch, for combining photos of adjacent scenes into panoramic images. Like many Canon ink jets, the S820 has paper supports that don't attach snugly, but at least the ones on this model are made of very sturdy plastic.
UPSHOT: For digital camera fans who want a machine exclusively to print photos, the S820 is a great choice.

Detailed Specs (Canon i320, 7816A001):
Product Description for Canon i320 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
Now you can achieve exceptional, photo-quality printing in the comfort of your home or office. The i320 speeds through projects at up to 10 ppm in black and 6 ppm in color (using high-speed Draft mode), offering an unbeatable combination of quality, speed, and value. Enjoy true-to-life photos with up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi color resolution--38 percent greater than 2,880 x 720 dpi printers have. The versatile i320 is also ideal for printing fast, colorful Web pages and crisp letters.
The printer supports ExifPrint 2.2 (Exchangeable Image Format File), a worldwide standard for high-quality digital photos, with its exclusive Easy-PhotoPrint software. When a digital camera with ExifPrint technology captures a photo, it saves important camera settings and shooting conditions in the resulting JPEG image file. Easy-PhotoPrint analyzes the recorded data, then automatically adjusts printer driver levels and image-correction settings for optimal processing.
With its built-in paper feeder, the i320 handles 100 sheets of 24-pound paper, 80 sheets of high-resolution paper, 20 sheets of glossy 4-x-6-inch photo cards, 10 sheets of 8.5-x-11-inch glossy photo paper, or 30 transparency sheets. When the printer is used with Canon Photo Paper Pro, your favorite photos should retain their brilliance for about 25 years.
This printer model is not being manufactured by Canon any more
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
WHAT'S HOT: Canon's $79 i320 is the least expensive ink jet we tested for our January 2003 roundup, yet it turns out brightly colored, subtly textured glossy photos and clean--if slightly grayish--text on ordinary paper. It prints narrow lines reasonably well--a challenging feat for most ink jets. Its performance doesn't set any records, but at 4.7 pages per minute on text--about 1 ppm slower than the average for the general-purpose printers we reviewed--you won't grow too impatient waiting for your letters and memos.
Canon provides an excellent set-up poster, a useful printed user's manual, and an extensive HTML manual on CD-ROM that covers details such as hand duplexing and improving print quality.
WHAT'S NOT: The i320's construction feels flimsy--the shell and paper trays seem likely to crack with little provocation. The paper feed has no bypass slot for an envelope or a single sheet of letterhead. And the i320 doesn't do well on gray-scale photos; we saw rough textures and moire patterns on our test samples. If printing black-and-white images is on your agenda, another printer would be a better choice.
WHAT ELSE: The i320 doesn't take up much desk space: With its paper trays folded, it's only 15 inches wide, 7 inches deep, and 6.5 inches high. At just 4 pounds, it's also easy to move or carry.
UPSHOT: If preserving desk space, saving some cash, and having a printer that can be seen and not heard matters to you, the i320 will fill the bill.

Full Specifications (Canon i350 Printer, 8549A001):
Product Description for Canon i350 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
The Canon i350 Color Bubble Jet Printer delivers crisp text, simple setup, and high-quality photos from the Web—all at an exceptional value. Web photos often suffer from poor quality, so Canon specially developed Easy Webprint software to improve them (Windows only). Functioning as a toolbar in Microsoft IE, it automatically scales and smoothes pages to fit your paper properly, and allows you to format multiple pages as a single, multi-column page.
The i350 printer's compact design fits nicely into limited workspaces; with a weight of just 5.3 pounds, you'll hardly know it's there. A full software package is included to make photo printing easy manageable, and the two ink cartridges are included in the box. USB connectivity means just one cord is necessary, but you'll need to supply it yourself. Canon provides a one-year warranty with Instant Exchange service.
What's in the Box
Printer; AC power supply and cord; BCI-24 black ink tank; BCI-24 color ink tank; Setup Software and User's Guide CD-ROM including printer drivers, User's Guide and e-registration, Easy-PhotoPrint (Windows/Mac), Easy-WebPrint (Windows, requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5, version 6.0 recommended); printer cable not included
Street Price: $129.85
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
Canon's i350 costs only $60 and resembles a loaf of bread, but the little machine impressed us in most stages of PC World's testing. It printed solid, well-defined black text with only subtle hatching or barbs on diagonal lines. On plain paper, the i350 produced gray-scale photos with realistic textures and shading, though a slightly soft-focus look obscured detail somewhat. (Our prints on coated inkjet paper looked sharper.) On glossy photo paper, the i350 printed our test photos with sharp detail; colors looked natural though slightly washed out. We clocked the i350 printing text at 5.4 pages per minute, a fairly average speed among inkjets we've tested lately; on graphics, the rate fell to an unusually slow 0.7 ppm. One warning: When we handled plain-paper printouts, the inks tended to smear.
The i350 uses two ink cartridges. The black tank costs $7 and prints an estimated 300 pages of text, which works out to a modest 2.3 cents per page. Printing color, on the other hand, isn't particularly cheap. A three-color cartridge costs $18.50 and produces an estimated 170 pages of light graphics (not photos); so you'll use about 12.2 cents of ink (including the cost of black ink) per color page, versus our current average of 10 cents per page.
UPSHOT: The i350 is for bargain hunters who won't compromise on print quality, but can live without fast print speeds and fancy features.

Full Specifications (Canon Pixma IP90):
Product Description for Pixma IP90 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
Rugged, powerful and portable, the Canon PIXMA iP90 Photo Printer delivers exceptional performance at home or on the road. This compact printer can produce up to 16 ppm in black and up to 12 ppm in color, while achieving a resolution of up to 4,800 x 1,200 color dpi. Canon full-photolithography inkjet nozzle engineering uses a high-performance 1,088-nozzle print head that ejects precise and consistent droplets as small as two picoliters with remarkable accuracy. Your results: impressive resolution and dramatic detail on graphics and photos, wherever you're printing from.
Easy-PhotoPrint v3.0
While most photo-editing software applications will brighten the entire image, Easy-PhotoPrint 3.0 accurately detects the subject's face and adjusts the skin to the optimum tone. Brighten dark faces caused by bright backgrounds. Choose from one-click automatic to correct the entire image all at once, or manual to correct just a selected area.
Photo Optimizer PRO
Photo Optimizer PRO does not simply adjust image data; it also makes adjustments in the printer driver. It assesses color balance, vividness, and brightness based on a histogram analysis of image data (raw image), and then makes ideal adjustments within the three-dimensional color space of the entire image, also making optimum use of the image's characteristics. Photo Optimizer PRO utilizes the functions of Bubble Jet printers to reproduce clear colors. Making multi-adjustments to a variety of images requires finetuning, because processes that are suitable for certain adjustments may be detrimental to other adjustments.
Canon Smart Ink Features
If you're on-the-go and low on ink the iP90 printer's "Ink Usage Control" setting enables you to produce approximately 1.5 times more pages without lowering print quality. Plus, if you run out of black ink, just choose the "Use Composite Black" option and the iP90 printer continues to print black using a composite of color inks in the "Ink Usage Control" setting. These features are a convenient safety net when you don't have extra ink on hand.
Versatile, Wireless Printing
The iP90 printer offers both IrDA compatibility and an optional Bluetooth interface enabling you to print wirelessly from a PC, PDA or mobile phone. For maximum portability, an optional Canon car adapter and rechargeable battery kit provide power on the go.
MSRP for Canon IP90: $249.99
Street Price: $200.00 - $260.00
PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
Canon's $250 Pixma IP90 portable photo printer offers good prints for mobile users. The 4-pound unit prints better and faster than its predecessor, the Canon I80, and even competes with full-size rivals.
The PC World Test Center clocked the IP90 printing text at 6.3 pages per minute--faster than many desktop inkjet printers and 10 percent quicker than the I80. Color graphics came at a relatively slow 1.4 ppm, but our test photo printed in a reasonable 2 minutes, 33 seconds, nearly a minute faster than the I80.
On photo paper, color and gray-scale images looked a little light; and compared with prints from full-size inkjets, the images lacked some contrast, which made them look slightly blurry. That said, the unit produced very crisp photos for a portable printer.
The IP90 offers plenty of connectivity options but lacks the memory card slots found on some portable printers. In addition to a USB port, there's a built-in infrared port (useful with cell-phone cameras), a PictBridge port for compatible cameras, and an $80 Bluetooth option.
The IP90 represents a solid traveling companion for anyone who finds they often need to print on the go.

This printer model is not being manufactured by Canon any more
PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
WHAT'S HOT: The S330 prints accurate, clean text at an above-average speed of 5.9 pages per minute. The consumables cost is fairly low, too, at 2.3 cents per text page (according to vendor estimates of yield per ink cartridge). Though its gray-scale and color prints on plain paper didn't wow us, quality took a big jump on glossy photo paper, showing fine detail and rich color. Those are impressive capabilities in a $100 printer not intended primarily for photos. Canon's set-up poster and printed manual provide clear, detailed help for getting started; and an extensive on-screen manual covers the driver's features, troubleshooting issues, and the bundled applications in depth.
WHAT'S NOT: The S330 makes a racket--during printing and even when it's idle and making various adjustments. Like many of Canon's inexpensive ink jets, the S330 has paper supports that readily fall out when you move the printer or pick up your prints.
WHAT ELSE: Canon bundles several of its own programs that should appeal to digital camera users, such as Easy-PhotoPrint (for creating documents that use photos) and PhotoStitch (for combining photos of adjacent scenes into panoramic images). Though the printer driver's screens are somewhat complex, they provide access to a rich feature set, including support for duotone printing.Good text, good-enough photos, and a low price make the S330 a fine printer for home users.
