Offering all the features you can hope for in a multifunction printer, the Canon MultiPass F50 ($500 street) includes a scanner with both a flatbed and an automatic document feeder (ADF), as well as color for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. The unit even delivers faster printing than most multifunction printers (MFPs) built around color ink jet engines. Its Achilles' heel is output quality, which is good enough to be acceptable to many users but falls far short of that offered by the best ink jets.
On our performance tests, the F50 was generally faster than most MFPs we've tested recently. In default mode, the printer managed 4.1 pages per minute (ppm) for text in a 10-page Microsoft Word document and 6.0 ppm for a 30-page document. The F50 also printed our three 8- by 10-inch test photos at 0.6 ppm each.
Output quality was mixed, however. Text in the default mode is less crisp than we would like, making this the wrong printer to use if you want to impress your clients. But the output is acceptable for most other purposes. Graphics and photo output is appropriate for an ink jet printer, falling between fair and good for both standard and best modes, with little difference noticeable in speed or quality between the two.
For scanning, Canon's Twain driver is a bit simplistic; for example, there's no indication of color depth for color scanning. But the driver will serve basic office scanning needs. You can also find brightness, contrast, gamma, and histogram controls, although you'll have to search for them.
The F50 comes with Scansoft's OmniPage Pro 9.0 for OCR. This includes a useful wizard to guide you through the process step by step, including specifying what language the scanned document uses, whether it uses single-column text, and whether you want to keep the formatting and font.
The Canon MultiPass F50 can be a welcome tool in a small office. But be sure to comparison-shop models in the HP OfficeJet line, which has superior color output overall.

Bottom Line: The Canon MultiPass MP390 prints, scans, faxes, copies, and prints photos directly from cameras and memory cards and lets you fax from programs on your computer. Performance is at the low end of midrange, but output quality is good to very good—all of which make the MP390 a reasonable choice.

The Canon MultiPass C530 combines the functions of a color printer, fax machine, convenience color copier, and PC scanner at an almost irresistible price. The C530 is best suited to home use because of its modest performance ratings. Printing is rated at up to 2 pages per minute (ppm), and the copier function can make black-and-white copies at up to 3.1 copies per minute (cpm). Color copies range from three to nine minutes per page, depending on resolution settings.
Setup is almost as easy as plugging in a traditional ink-jet printer. We connected the C530 to our test PC with a bidirectional parallel cable, inserted the ink cartridges, and plugged in our phone line. The unit offers three RJ-11 phone jacks for line, telephone, and an answering machine. We loaded the ink cartridges by placing the color and black ink tanks into the print head, dropping the head in place, locking it in place with the blue lever, and pressing the cartridge key, which is exposed only while the cover is open.

Canon S530D has an LCD status screen with an array of control buttons and three slots for removable media. The S530D uses four ink tanks.
The newest Canon photo printer, the S530D, has a PC Card slot (and includes a CompactFlash adapter) that lets you print directly from removable media cards. But if you want to print from Memory Stick, MultiMediaCard, SmartMedia, or SecureDigital media, you'll need to purchase a PC Card adapter. A direct connection on the front panel for some Canon PowerShot digital camera models is a convenience. The S530D's LCD menu/status screen lets you select or check major photo-printing settings—necessary for direct printing from cameras or memory cards but less convenient than Canon's software driver if you're printing from a normal photo application.
Output from the S530D for both graphics and photo printing was a step below the other Canon printers as well as the other photo printers in our roundup. But the S530D still did a better job printing photos than most conventional ink jets.
Unfortunately, the S830D ($350 street) wasn't available for testing. It combines six-color printing with the S530D's memory card slot and a direct camera connection. An optional color LCD preview screen for the S530D ($100) is a great help for printing from memory cards. The S530D is an acceptable choice, but we'd trade the direct printing and control panel operation for better print quality.

Any small office working with both documents and pictures will value the Canon Pixma MP780. For $300, it's a good multifunction device for printing, copying, scanning, and faxing.
For instance, you can drop as many as 35 pages into its automatic document feeder for fast scanning or copying. Dual paper trays hold 300 sheets; and in case the paper runs out, the unit's memory can store 250 pages of incoming faxes. You can save paper by using the built-in duplexer to print on both sides.
The MP780 lacks media card slots, but a PictBridge port lets you print directly from a compatible digital camera.
The numerous buttons on the control panel are clearly labeled, and the backlit monochrome LCD includes an ink-level display above its two lines of text. The unit also has eight speed-dial buttons that you can use to store frequently used fax numbers.
The MP780 uses four dye-based inks, supplemented by a second, pigment-based black ink. In our test prints, text looked crisp, with sharp italics. Large letters were dark and solid, while small fonts were easy to read. Line art printed darkly enough, but suffered from wide horizontal banding and blobs on narrow parallel lines. Overall, color graphics looked good, though the darkest areas had a posterized appearance where the pigment black seemed to kick in too strongly. On photo paper, the MP780 produced images with sharp detail, smooth color transitions, and bright colors.
The MP780 was consistently fast at all printing tasks. Considering that the MP780 delivered better text quality than its faster rivals, its 6.9-ppm text print speed was excellent. Also, it printed our test photo in just 77 seconds, much faster than the average of 127 seconds. The MP780 was quicker than average at copying, too, and it scanned faster than any other model that earned a spot on the chart.
Though the MP780 copied text documents well, its scans didn't impress us. In particular, our detailed photograph lacked sharpness and color accuracy despite being scanned at the highest resolution.
Canon bundles some helpful software with the MP780, including the Presto PageManager document management application and ScanSoft's OmniPage SE OCR software, though not ArcSoft's PhotoStudio image editor.
Upshot: The Canon Pixma MP780 delivers fast performance and high-quality printing, plus office-friendly features like a duplexer, automatic document feeder, and built-in color faxing.

Canon i250 has only a USB interface, and comes without a cable. But it has well-illustrated setup guide. i250 comes with Easy PhotoPrint software for printing a single photo or a batch, and Easy-WebPrint, which formats Web pages for printing.
Canon i250 printer has power switches conveniently located on its front panel, as well as a second button that doubles as Cancel or Resume, depending on the context. The print driver is extensive, with all the familiar extras, including poster, n-up, manual duplex, watermark, and background printing. A wizard helps you choose which features to use in order to get the results you want.
The installation process includes a head alignment procedure, but instead of having the printer automatically adjust on its own, you must make judgments based on the printout.
