Aside from a slight sound when the paper feed first advances a new sheet, the S500 is very quiet. On quality tests with plain paper, images were clear, and colors were true with no noticeable banding. Detail and color accuracy were also noteworthy on glossy photo paper, although we again noticed minor posterization in a photo with large blue skies.
On our speed tests, the S500 trailed the extremely speedy S300, despite a faster rating from Canon. But the S500 is the least expensive to own and operate for three years of all the printers we tested—at just $505.77—and the most economical for one year's ownership as well. When you balance the S500's tested printing speed (which is faster than the higher-rated S630), the S500 is clearly the best Canon has.

Canon's i860 uses five inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, and two kinds of black--a photo black for graphics and a pigment-based black mostly for text. The dual blacks pay off: Letters look dark but very clean at big and small type sizes. And because the i860 holds all five tanks at once, you don't have to switch inks to print fine-looking glossy photos. Gray-scale prints showed sharp detail and realistic shading, and color photos accurately reproduced colors and textures. Color graphics on plain paper, however, were less impressive: They had a dotty texture, some colors looked slightly oversaturated, and dark shadows had a posterized appearance. The $150 i860 is quick: It printed text at 6.8 ppm and color graphics on plain paper at 2.3 ppm.
Like Canon's slightly more expensive i960 Photo Printer, the i860 has a cartridge that locks onto the main paper tray and holds snapshot-size paper. Canon offers an $80 duplexer option, too. Like other recent Canon printers, the i860 forgoes media card slots in favor of a PictBridge port on the front; and the back has USB 1.1 and parallel ports. On top of everything else, the printer's ink costs were low: 2.7 cents per page of black, and 8.3 cents per page of color plus black.
Upshot: The i860 generates high-quality prints, but it lacks media-card slots.

The Canon PIXMA iP1500 photo printer isn't the fastest photo printer we've tested, and it doesn't offer the best-quality photos we've ever seen. But it offers a combination of speed and quality that's astounding at the price—just $50 (direct).
What you won't find at this price are bells and whistles. The iP1500 doesn't offer such extras as memory card slots or direct printing from cameras. Rather, it's a basic four-color printer that measures 6.5 by 16.4 by 8.1 inches (HWD), and offers only a USB 1.1 port on the back. The black and tricolor cartridges are smaller than most, which means you can expect to replace them relatively often—cancelling the benefit of the low purchase price if you do a lot of printing.
On our performance tests, the iP1500 averaged 2 minutes 30 seconds for printing a 4-by-6 photo, and 5:55 for an 8-by-10. That makes it a close match in photo speed to the Canon MultiPASS MP390—our Editors' Choice in the ink jet-based AIO category. Surprisingly for a photo printer, however, it also managed a 29:53 total time on our business applications suite. That makes it faster than many standard ink jets, and much faster than the MP390, which took 42:06.
Output quality is another strong point. The rating for photos is just short of excellent, with most photos in our test qualifying as true photo quality, but with a minor tint on our monochrome test photo. Text printing rates as good, with more than half the test fonts easily readable at 4 points, but some stylized fonts needing 12 points for easy readability. Graphics were marred by slight banding in default mode, but still rank as just short of very good.
The small ink cartridges limit the iP1500 to light-duty use, but the combination of speed, quality, and price makes it a good choice as either a light duty all-purpose printer, or a secondary printer specifically for printing occasional photos.

WHAT'S HOT: Canon's multitalented MultiPass MP730 did consistently well in our tests. It was the fastest printer of the six ink jet-based devices we tested, and its print quality was among the best. The MP730 reproduced our high-resolution color photo with rich tones. It also turned in the fastest photocopying times in this roundup, beating even the speedy HP LaserJet 3330mfp.
The MP730 has enough extras to delight buyers who want everything. Its built-in fax lets you send documents via an easy-to-use control panel. Unlike some other MFPs we reviewed, the MP730 doesn't include a separate application for PC faxing, but it does let you use applications such as Microsoft Word to do faxing.
Slots are included for CompactFlash, Multimedia Card, Secure Digital, and Memory Stick memory cards. In addition, the MP730 is the only color MFP in our roundup to offer both flatbed scans and a sheet feeder, so you can use the sheet feeder to copy multipage documents, and use the scan bed for copying book and magazine pages.
WHAT'S NOT: This was the most expensive ink jet MFP in our June 2003 roundup, by $100. Its advantages in speed, image quality, and range of features don't justify such a big price premium.
WHAT ELSE: The MFP's software interface is a one-strip window in which several large icons represent major functions (much as with the HP PSC 2210). This helps you access print, scan, and copy functions without having to search through a complicated menu.
For OCR tasks, Canon includes Omnipage SE, a version of ScanSoft's Omnipage Pro OCR application. Omnipage SE lacks some of the advanced features found in such OCR software as Abbyy FineReader (which is included with the Dell A940, the Lexmark X5150, and the Lexmark PrinTrio X75), but its recognition accuracy is respectable.
UPSHOT: The MP730's performance and image quality are a cut above what we saw from other MFPs, but the price is pretty steep.

WHAT'S HOT: The i450 prints black text that is slightly faint but clean-edged, so the letters are legible even at small sizes. In our tests, print samples showed distinct narrow parallel lines--a difficult feat for an ink jet printer to accomplish. In gray-scale photos we saw fine detail and a lively range of gray shades, though the images were slightly grainy. Glossy photos looked even, with smooth textures, superb detail, and bright colors. What's more, the gradients and transitions rivaled output from six-color printers.
You get an extra USB 1.1 port for printing images directly from a digital camera, but that feature works only with Canon models. Sturdy paper trays fold closed when empty to keep out dust and save space, though the paper-input tray clips on rather loosely and may come off when you open or close it. Based on Canon's ink yields (580 pages for an $18 tricolor cartridge), ink prices work out to a reasonable 12.8 cents per page for graphics and only 2.3 cents for black text.
WHAT'S NOT: On plain paper the i450 doesn't print color as well as we'd expect--photos look grainy, lack detail, and have a slightly foggy cast. (Coated ink jet paper, as opposed to high-dollar glossy paper, improves detail but oversaturates colors.)
WHAT ELSE: The i450's text-printing speed of 5.4 pages per minute is a page per minute faster than the average speed of models on our July issue's Top 10 chart; at 0.9 ppm, its graphics speed is just a bit slower than the average.
Canon's thorough documentation walks you through assembly and installation, and it covers beginning and advanced use in great detail. Canon's CD-ROM also includes the company's standard utility bundle: Easy-PhotoPrint, ZoomBrowser EX/PhotoRead, PhotoStitch, and Easy-WebPrint.
This printer's clear text and glossy photo quality exceed the output of many of the general-purpose printers we've reviewed.

WHAT'S HOT: If you plan to print lots of photos, you'll appreciate how the i9100 churns out high-resolution pics on glossy paper at 1.5 ppm--more than twice the average on the Top 5 chart. Its color photos show bright, accurate colors, and both color and gray-scale images exhibit sharp detail and smooth textures. Serious photographers will love the printer's wide carriage, which can handle paper up to 13 inches wide by 19 inches long. The i9100 also prints text fairly quickly, at 3.9 ppm (though another recent Canon, the Photo i850, produced text at more than twice that speed). Canon provides a helpful setup poster; a thorough printed manual; and a long, detailed HTML manual full of great tips and troubleshooting suggestions.
WHAT'S NOT: The i9100's price tag may be fair for a printer that can handle oversize paper, but $500 is still a formidable cost for most nonprofessionals. Also, the printer sometimes makes a racket when idle.
WHAT ELSE: Though the text quality on plain paper suffers from a somewhat grayish look and rough edges, it is good enough for the occasional letter or spreadsheet. (If you use coated ink-jet paper, text quality compares well to any printer.)
The paper supports on many other Canon ink jets hang loosely and fall off when you move them, but Canon has rectified that problem on the i9100: The output tray is a hinged part of the printer itself, and the input support settles snugly into deep notches. However, when the trays are open for 13-by-19-inch paper, you'll need desk space at least 22 inches by 31 inches to accommodate the printer.
UPSHOT: Graphic designers, service bureaus, and people in love with digital photography will find the i9100 a good match for their needs.

WHAT'S HOT: Canon's new S500 produces higher-quality graphics than many other ink jets in the $150 range. Though colors initially appear a bit brown, a little tweaking in a photo editor enables the S500 to deliver sharp detail with natural shading and transitions. The S500 also features ultra-affordable ink prices: A page of text uses only 2 cents' worth, and a page of color graphics only 10.7 cents. Unlike typical ink cartridges that enclose all color inks in one ink cartridge, Canon's S500 puts each ink color into a separate tank, so when you deplete one color you can replace just its tank instead of the whole cartridge.
Canon provides clear documentation for setting up and getting started, along with a more thorough online manual (almost 200 pages long) that details everything from using the printer driver's features to clearing paper jams, fixing print quality, and establishing communication between the printer and your PC.
WHAT'S NOT: The S500's print speed is acceptable but unimpressive, especially for home-office use. A number of comparably priced ink jets--such as Lexmark's Z53--print text and graphics faster than the S500's 3.8 ppm and 0.2 ppm. Text samples looked adequate overall, but they also showed heavier ink bleed than other samples, and they appeared jagged in some places. As for its design, the S500 Bubble Jet has tough and durable paper-feed and output trays, but they don't clip snugly to the printer; they can fall off the printer easily when you move or bump them.
WHAT ELSE: We're not crazy about the S500's purple plastic exterior and sparkly silver-speckled lid. Canon hasn't forgotten older PCs, though: The S500 sports a parallel port right next to the USB port. The software bundle includes PhotoRecord, which provides templates for designing documents that include digital photos, and PhotoStitch, which lets you combine several side-by-side photos into a single panoramic image. Despite the S500's sluggish performance, the unit's combination of satisfactory print quality and excellent ink value suit it for home use.

WHAT'S HOT: The I550 is the sibling of Canon's I320, but at $149, it's almost twice as expensive. That extra cost is worth it if you're looking for a speed boost: The I550 is almost twice as fast on graphics as the I320 is, at 1.3 pages per minute. The unit spits out text at 7.3 ppm--it's the fastest of the general-purpose printers we tested for our January 2003 roundup, and it's 35 percent faster than the I320. The I550 prints clear black text, renders narrow lines adequately, and delivers glossy photos with sharp detail and smooth textures.
The I550 has the lowest ink cartridge costs of any printer on the general-purpose chart: A black cartridge is only $14, and color cartridges are $12 each (the printer uses three). Canon reports that black cartridges yield about 740 pages of text each and color cartridges average 490 pages. Based on those figures, a color print should run about 9.2 cents, while black-only prints will cost around 1.9 cents.
WHAT'S NOT: The I550 lacks a bypass feed for envelopes and letterhead. In addition, it renders poor gray-scale images, with a grainy texture and heavy banding that obscures detail.
WHAT ELSE: Like the I320, the I550's quiet mode may come in handy when you need to print without disturbing anyone nearby.
Canon's documentation includes an excellent set-up poster, a useful printed user's manual, and an extensive on-screen manual that covers details such as hand duplexing and improving print quality. Canon provides a useful printed manual and an extensive on-screen help file.
Zippy performance, good text quality, and low operating costs make the I550 a good family or home-office printer.
