Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

The Canon BJC 3000 color bubble jet printer is an inexpensive and lightweight compact printer that also provides fast, professional-quality desktop printing. With its sleek design and built-in USB and parallel ports (both Macintosh- and PC-compatible), the BJC 3000 is a fine companion for your desktop or laptop computer.

Detailed Specs (S830D, 7887A013):
Product Description for Canon S830D (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
Want to hold your digital camera's images in your hand? Consider Canon's S830D Photo Printer. Compatible with most memory sticks, and directly enabled to make a USB2 connection with most Canon digital cameras, the S830D is a digital photo printer that doesn't need a computer to do its job. The image resolution of the S830D (2400x1200 dpi) is high enough to print 8x10 prints with no visible granulation, and the six ink cartridges are made in such a way that they can be replaced individually, based on use, rather than as an entire color cartridge that holds all the colors in one case. And if you do have a computer that needs to print documents from time to time, the S830D is a durable, high-speed, high-resolution printer that will serve you well.
The six-color Canon S830D photo printer produces expert-quality photos from digital cameras--with or without the use of a computer. Snap the shot, then insert your digital camera's memory card into the Memory Card slot. With select Canon PowerShot cameras, you can print directly from the S830D printer without a computer.
The S830D printer delivers photo-lab quality 4-x-6-inch borderless photos with up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution in approximately 60 seconds and 8-x-10-inch prints in approximately two minutes (calculated based on an 8-by-10-inch image printed on 8.5-x-11-inch size Canon Photo Paper Pro). When they're printed on Canon Photo Paper Pro, your favorite photos will retain their brilliance for about 25 years.
The S830D printer features several Canon breakthroughs to create virtually unrivaled performance. Advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology dramatically improves resolution and detail through a revolutionary nozzle system that ejects consistent, prescribed-volume droplets in ultra-fine sizes with remarkable precision and accuracy. The high-density printhead has a best-in-class 1,536 nozzles. The exclusive Canon Think Tank System, another Canon first, combines individual ink tanks with intelligent ink management for ease of use and lower printing costs.
The S830D printer supports Exif 2.2 (Exchangeable Image Format File), a worldwide standard for high-quality digital photos. The S830D printer with exclusive Easy-PhotoPrint software delivers the potential of Exif Print. When an Exif-compliant digital camera captures a photo, the camera saves important camera settings and shooting conditions within the JPEG image file. Simple-to-use Easy-PhotoPrint analyzes the recorded data, then automatically adjusts the printer driver settings for optimal image processing. The result is digital photos that are more likely to match the photographer's intentions.
MSRP for Canon S830D: $399.00
Street Price: $166.00 - $380.00
CNET.com Editors' rating: 6.5 Fair
Average user rating: 6.5 Fair
The good: Easy to set up; prints with or without PC; supports many cameras and camera media.
The bad: Text quality looks merely fair; cluttered display/control area; photo prints could be better.
The bottom line: The S830D is adequate for printing images directly from a camera, but we expect better quality for this price.

Detailed Specs (Canon S820D):
Product Description for Canon S820D (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
Requiring no special papers to achieve refined color and sharp detail, the S820D from Canon makes prints clear and colorful, borderless photos a snap. It's the ideal companion for your Canon PowerShot S30 or S40 digital camera, as the printer supports a dedicated connection to these models, and it prints directly from any camera's memory card.
The S820D uses a six-color printing process with individual ink tanks (256 x 6 nozzles) to reduce waste. The inks are formulated to provide lightfast photos lasting up to 25 years. Print crisp black and color prints at 2,400 x 1,200 dpi on a wide variety of media, including letter size, legal size, A4, and A5. Canon claims you can print an 8-by-10-inch photo on plain paper in under two minutes and a 4-by-6-inch photo in about one minute.
The printer has a USB interface and is compatible with your Mac or PC. It is packaged with a Canon PCMCIA adapter for CompactFlash cards and a direct interface cable for Canon PowerShot S30 and S40 cameras. Other directly supported memory cards include SmartMedia, Memory Stick, IBM Microdrive, and SD Card. Software includes the printer drivers as well as PhotoRecord and Zoombrowser for Windows, ImageBrowser for Mac, and PhotoStitch for both Windows and Mac. Canon offers a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor.

PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
Color ink-jet photo printers are nothing new, but the Canon S820D Color Bubble Jet Photo Printer is the first that packs almost all popular options into one device. The S820D can print from memory cards, interface directly with Canon digital cameras, operate as a regular text printer, and produce excellent photo-quality prints. But at $399 (list), it's somewhat pricey ($499 with optional 1.5-inch LCD viewfinder), especially when you consider that the camera's direct-connect cable works with only two of Canon's models, the printer is wide enough to support paper sizes up to only 8.5 inches, and it's not fast or robust enough for serious professional photographic use.
The silver-and-blue S820D measures a compact 7.4 by 16.9 by 11.6 inches (HWD) and resembles an electronic cash register when the optional color LCD image viewer is installed. Located on the printer's left side is a PC Card slot, which, with adapters, can accommodate Type I or Type II CompactFlash adapters (including IBM Microdrives), SmartMedia, Secure Data (SD), MultiMediaCard (MMC), and the Sony Memory Stick. The adapter that ships with the printer, however, works only with CompactFlash. To take advantage of other supported memory cards, you'll have to purchase adapters from a third party.
To the left of the PC Card slot is the port for directly connecting the included cable to a Canon PowerShot S30 or S40 digital camera. On the right side of the printer top is an eight-line LCD panel. A cluster of control buttons is located below the panel and the optional color LCD display above it. The LCD panel displays DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) information, which is tagged to the memory card's images. Although the printer is designed to operate without a computer, it comes equipped with a USB port and cable in case you choose to connect.
Setting up the printer and installing the driver and software is a no-brainer. It took us about 10 minutes. The S820D uses six individual color cartridges that easily snap into place, and the printhead utilizes Canon's proprietary Advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology that sprays dots as small as four picoliters, at a maximum resolution of 2,400 by 1,200 dpi. When outputting from a PC, the S820D is relatively fast, completing a 4- by 6-inch photo-quality image on Canon's borderless paper in just 56 seconds. That's an excellent speed for amateur photographers but not fast enough for professional productivity.
Printing directly from memory cards or Canon digital cameras is straightforward. Plug in the memory card and—assuming that you have the optional LCD color display image viewer installed—the image instantly appears on it. The printer works equally well with JPEG or TIFF images, though it cannot handle RAW files. Step-by-step instructions ease navigation through the DPOF menu via arrows and control buttons, as do clear English text on the sides of the panel and helpful icons.
We tested the S820D with a Canon S30 digital camera. When you plug in the direct-connect cable, the camera automatically turns on, the LCD viewfinder is illuminated, and the resolution is set at 1,200 by 1,200 dpi. All the DPOF information appears on the camera not the printer LCD panel. Outputting a 4- by 6-inch borderless DPOF print took a run-of-the-mill 1 minute 43 seconds. Images are crisp, sharp, and detailed. Color, although a little oversaturated (especially when using Canon's Photo Optimizer firmware), has a virtually continuous tone. With the ink pattern so tight, it's almost impossible to detect individual dots.
The S820D worked well with other cameras that were not directly connected to the printer as well. Making a 4- by 6-inch borderless DPOF print from a 3-megapixel Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 812 digital camera took 3 minutes 56 seconds. Our only complaint is that the image on the LCD is very small, making it difficult to discern detail.
Canon says that its Photo Pro paper and corresponding ink cartridges can remain fade-free for up to 25 years when images are displayed or stored under proper conditions, such as under glass and out of direct sunlight. Media costs are comparable with other ink jets and dye-sub snapshot printers. Though billed primarily as a photo printer, the S820D can, of course print regular text as well.
The Canon S820D Color Bubble Jet Photo Printer is a solid, versatile photo printer for serious amateurs for whom convenience is more important than economy.

To help reduce waste, each ink color is stored in a transparent, individually replaceable tank. As a result, users replace only the ink that runs out, not an entire tricolor cartridge containing unused ink.
Fine Print Head
All of the Canon PIXMA Photo All-in-Ones feature exclusive Canon Fine high-performance print heads. Fine technology (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) delivers sub-micron level precision during the printing process. Fine print heads are the only consumer-oriented print heads to achieve an actual 1,200 dpi nozzle pitch and are manufactured without machining or assembly.
The Fine print head found in the Canon PIXMA MP760 Photo All-in-One is an adaptation of Canon's own silicon chip manufacturing technology, used to create print heads with the tolerance and precision close to that of integrated circuits. The PIXMA MP760 Photo All-in-One has 1,856 total nozzles that are capable of ejecting millions of ink droplets as small as two picoliters each second, the smallest ink droplet size in its class. This unique method produces detailed images with outstanding resolution of up to 4,800 by 1,200 color dpi. Fine print heads provide greater accuracy for virtually grain-free prints.
Software
The PIXMA MP760 Photo All-in-One includes the following software:
- MP Navigator (Windows/Mac) helps users get immediate optimal results with minimum fuss. Users select the required process (e.g. scan, print image from PC), then select the desired output; e.g., photo print, PC copy, OCR, attach to e-mail, printing or save as a file or PDF.
- Easy-PhotoPrint (Windows/Mac) assists with options such as media selection, size, and scaling to make borderless printing of JPEG files easy. It includes features such as Face Sharpening for out-of-focus face correction, Red Eye Correction, Digital Face Smoothing to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and Blemish Remover.
- Easy-WebPrint (Windows 98, 2000, Me only) sits on the Internet Explorer toolbar and helps to take the frustration out of web page printing by correctly scaling output to prevent the common problem of having the right-hand side of web pages cut off.
- ScanSoft OmniPage SE (Windows/Mac) - Optical Character Recognition application that converts scanned text into characters for editing or storage as searchable text file.
- Arcsoft Photostudio (Windows/Mac) - Image-editing program featuring automatic color and tone enhancement, cloning, animated 3D text and over 40 special effects.

MSRP for Canon PIXMA MP760: $299.99
Street Price: $200.00 - $325.00
PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
The Canon Pixma MP760 Photo All-in-One ($299.99 direct) is the second AIO we've seen that includes a transparency adapter in the top cover. The other is the similarly priced Epson Stylus Photo RX620. Much like the Epson AIO, the MP760 can work as a printer, scanner, standalone copier, and standalone photo lab, printing directly from memory cards, PictBridge cameras, and 35mm slides and film.
Setup is typical for an AIO that connects via USB. The printer engine is the same one that's in two of our current Editors' Choices—the Pixma iP4000 printer and the Pixma MP780 Photo All-In-One. It uses the same five-cartridge ink system, with both pigment-based black for standard printing and dye-based black for photos, and offers essentially identical performance as those two units, among the fastest we've seen for ink jets.
On our business applications suite, the MP760's total time was a good 15 minutes 27 seconds. That compares well with the MP780's time of 15:41 and the iP4000's 15:48, with little difference among the three printers on any individual test. On our photo suite, the MP760 averaged 1:08 for each 4-by-6 and 2:36 for each 8-by-10, again closely matching the iP4000 and MP780. By contrast, we timed the Epson RX620 at a relatively slow 26:46 total for the business applications suite, although it tied with the MP760 for photos.
Output quality is better than with most ink jets, ranging from the high end of good for text and graphics to the high end of very good for photos. That matches the RX620 for text and photos, and falls just below the RX620's very good for graphics. Text was easily readable at 4 points for more than half the test fonts, but one font required 12. The only issue for graphics was a tendency to lose thin lines.
Photos are true photo quality, but the MP760 misses an excellent rating because of a sprinkling of minor flaws. Photos printed directly from prints and slides qualified as good or better, although the unit's scanner lost detail in dark areas on one particularly difficult test slide. Again, that's on a par with the RX620. The two printers are extremely well-matched, but the MP760's better speed for business applications gives it the advantage.

MSRP for Canon PIXMA MP130: $99.99
Street Price: $88.00 - $105.00
PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
If you don't expect much from an AIO at the $100 price point, the Canon Pixma MP130 Photo All-in-One ($99.99 direct) will be a pleasant surprise. At this price, you won't get an automatic document feeder (ADF), standalone fax features, or blazingly fast speed. But the MP130 is convincingly faster than other AIOs close to it in price, and it offers high-quality output. It also scans, copies, and prints directly from camera memory cards, and it can scan to a fax program to use your computer's modem if you have one.
Setup follows the usual steps for an AIO with a USB connection and two ink cartridges, with one exception. Unlike most ink jet printers and AIOs, the MP130 requires manual alignment: You print out an alignment page and then pick the most solid-looking blocks to set the alignment. And you have to go through this minor chore every time you change a cartridge.
Performance was a bit sluggish compared with that of ink jet printers and AIOs in general. But it was much faster than anything else in the MP130's price range. On our business applications suite, it turned in a total of 27 minutes 51 seconds, compared with over 35 minutes each for the Lexmark X5250 All-In-One, the HP PSC 1315 All-in-One, and the Dell Photo All-in-One Printer 922. On our photo suite, it averaged 2:34 for each 4-by-6 and 5:58 for each 8-by-10—a bit slower than the Dell 922 but significantly faster than the HP and Lexmark printers.
Output quality is better overall than for most ink jets at any price, with ratings of very good for graphics and photos, and at the high end of very good for text. Graphics show only a few minor issues, most notably a tendency to lose thin lines. Photos reach true photo quality with some images, but not all, primarily due to a slight posterization for some color photos and a slight tint in the monochrome test photo. Roughly half of our test fonts are easily readable at 4 points and none require larger than 10, for a text rating at the high end of very good.
Given this level of print quality, combined with better-than-usual speed for the price, the MP130 is a good value for anyone who doesn't need an ADF or fax.

It features a symmetrical print head design that virtually eliminates color variance and banding problems typically found with conventional high-speed printing.
With the i860, Canon launches the next evolutionary step in digital printing with the introduction of ContrastPLUS, an advanced 5-color ink system. MSRP for Canon i860: $120.00
Street Price: $84.00 - $200.00
CNET.com Editors' rating: 7.9 Good
Average user rating: 8.4 Very good
The good: Five-ink system; fast print speeds; 4x6-inch photo-paper tray; USB 2.0 port.
The bad: No LCD preview; lacks camera-card reader.
The bottom line: The i860 is the rare photo printer that quickly prints both text and high-quality photos. For photo-printing frills, however, look to the i900D.

Detailed Specs (Canon BJC 4300 ):
Product Description for BJC 4300 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
Black Page When Printing Faxes
If when you print a fax, it comes out as a solid black page, go into the printer's properties and set the printer to Mono.
Printing Squashed or Running off Right Hard Side of Page
If your printing is either squashed down the left hand side of the page, or that it runs off the right hand edge of the page the cause is down to the printer not detecting the right colour cartridge in the printer.
What you need to do is go into the Properties for the printer, then into the Graphics tab, and in the Colour Model section, change the setting from Colour to Photo Colour (if it is already set to Photo Colour, change it to Colour).
Scanner Print Head
If you get a problem whereby you get a General Protection Fault when the Screensaver starts, after you've installed the Scanner Software, the problem is with the software driver for the scanner head. Download the latest driver from Canon's Website. The version that definitely causes the problem is version 1.10.
Problems with Cartridge Detection
- Power off the printer
- Unplug the printer's power cord, wait 5 seconds then replug the power cord in.
- Hold the Power button for 6 Beeps
- Release the Power Button
This will reset the printer and should resolve incorrect cartridge detection problems.
Error Message : "Internal Error: Colour Adjustment Method will not be available".
Whenever you try to print you get the above message. If you press OK, it prints, but if you press Cancel it says you don't have enough memory to use the printer's driver. The solution is to update the printer's drivers to version 3.93 or higher. The drivers should be available from Canon's Website. Remember to uninstall the previous driver before updating.
When an image is scanned, it prints 4 times bigger then the page
This happens when you are using PAINT to print from. Use the software that came with the scanner or use any graphical/Desk Top Publishing software.
Compressed Printing when using Photo Cartridge
When using an BC-22 ink cartridge, printing is compressed by 50% horizontally. Settings used are Colour Model = Photo and Print Quality = High.
The BC-22 ink cartridge will only print properly when Print Quality is set to Standard. The BC-22 has since been discontinued and replaced with the BC-22e, which will print properly when Print Quality is set to High.

PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
VITAL STATS: 5-ppm monochrome, 2-ppm color ink jet; 720-by-360-dpi maximum resolution; 100 sheets input, 100 output. This new midrange model from Canon went straight to the top of our chart this month to become our new number-one color Best Buy. Cheaper (by $80) and faster at printing text (by about 35 percent) than its predecessor the BJC-4200, which was number three on our August chart, the BJC-4300 gives you the biggest bang for your buck of any color printer here. It--and not the new BJC-250--really should be Canon's entry-level system. At $199, the Canon BJC-4300 costs a mere $20 more than the BJC-250 but is built around a design that allows it to print true black and true four-color graphics.
The BJC-4300 does a charming job on color documents, printing edges clearly and revealing details that three-color printers would smother. We are also impressed by the BJC-4300's subtle and lifelike grayscales. Text quality? It's typical ink jet fare-not spectacular but certainly acceptable. Letters show slight jaggies, and tight corners start to fill in, but they are free of shadowing and spatter. Lines seem to be the printer's weak spot, with too much variation in weight.Like most other recent Canon printers, the BJC-4300's driver provides predefined settings for photos, graphics, and other document types, and a "set-up analyzer" that confirms your choices of paper type, image type, print quality, and so on. You can also customize and save driver configurations for special types of documents, such as sepia-toned photographs. The BJC-4300 also supports the $99 IS-22 Color Image Scanner cartridge that pops into the printhead's place, which turns your printer into a scanner. And, like most Canon printers, the BJC-4300's manual is an outstanding source of insight, with excellent explanations of how to get the best results from the driver and the many kinds of surfaces the printer supports, such as fabric, T-shirt transfers, glossy photo paper, banners, and specialty inks.We clocked the BJC-4300's text printing at 1.9 ppm--that's slower than most ink jets on our chart, but considerably faster than the BJC-4200. The BJC-4300 prints graphics at 3/10 page per minute, the same as most other ink jets.
The BJC-4300 comes with a fairly standard one-year limited warranty and a toll-free number, but once the year is up, each support call costs you a steep $24.95.

Detailed Specs (Canon PIXMA MP750, 9790A001):
Product Description for Canon MP750 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
The powerful Canon PIXMA MP750 Photo All-In-One is versatile and very fast. It can print or copy up to 25 ppm in black and up to 17 ppm in color, and a beautiful 4-by-6-inch borderless print takes about 36 seconds (1). Plus, its USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface (2) enables fast image transfers and scanning speeds delivering improved performance for both printing and scanning functions. For even higher productivity, the integrated 35-page auto document feeder helps you speed through larger copy jobs; dual paper path lets you keep a second type of paper ready for printing; and built-in two-sided printing (duplexing) saves both time and paper. Plus, electronic sorting automatically collates your copies, so you don't have to.
Features:
- Print and copy up to 25 ppm black, 17 ppm color
- 35-page auto document feeder, dual paper path, and built-in two-sided printing
- ContrastPLUS ink system for true-life photos and laser-quality text
- Scan beautiful color at up to 48-bit color depth
- Direct photo printing from PictBridge compatible digital cameras and DV camcorders
- Maximum 4,800 x 1,200 color dpi
This high-performance machine has the quality to match. When scanning photos and other images, you'll produce superb 2,400 dpi scans with 48-bit color depth. Its ContrastPLUS 5-color ink system--four dye-based inks plus a pigment-based black ink--produces brilliant photos, along with laser-quality text. Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a high-performance 1,856-nozzle print head that ejects precise and consistent droplets as small as 2 picoliters. The result? Clear, detailed images with outstanding resolution of up to 4,800 x 1,200 color dpi (3).
Precision Color Distribution Technology
Unlike other systems, nozzle configuration in Bubble Jet printers is simple, so it is easier to make them smaller and more dense. Using its superior semiconductor manufacturing technology, Canon has succeeded in developing an ultrahigh-precision, multinozzle print head. The problem of color inconsistency has been solved by positioning a mirror-image line of 128 nozzles (600 dpi pitch for each color) at a half-pitch offset from the existing line. This configuration also provides the added advantage of enabling high-resolution printing at 1,200 dpi.
Canon Think Tank System
This efficient system has five individual ink tanks, so you'll replace only the color that runs out, not an entire cartridge containing unused ink. Plus, a low-ink sensor alerts you when a tank's ink level gets low. The result? Higher efficiency, lower printing costs (4).
Exif Print Technology
Exif 2.2 is the worldwide printer independent standard for digital image processing. Under Exif 2.2, the digital still camera can record data tags for specific camera settings and functions such as whether the flash was on or off, if the camera was in landscape, portrait or night scene mode, etc. Referencing some or all of this information, an Exif Print compatible application can process digital camera images intelligently based on specific camera settings and the shooting environment.
Easy-PhotoPrint v3.0
While most photo-editing software applications will brighten the entire image, Easy-PhotoPrint 3.0 accurately detects the subject's face and adjusts the skin to the optimum tone. Brighten dark faces caused by bright backgrounds. Choose from one-click automatic to correct the entire image all at once, or manual to correct just a selected area.
Easy-PhotoPrint 3.0 also lets you select and print any image on your PC, perfectly trim images, correct images using lab-quality retouching features, correct red-eye, smooth facial lines and skin tone, sharpen faces, remove blemishes, and print in a variety of sizes and layouts.
Shoot, Print, Share
Here's a new, fast way to print photos: just connect to any PictBridge compatible (5) digital camera or DV camcorder, and print! It's simple, convenient and it will save you time.
What's in the Box
PIXMA MP750 Photo All-in-One, PIXMA MP750 print head, BCI-3eBk black, BCI-6Bk black, BCI-6C cyan, BCI-6M magenta, BCI-6Y yellow, power cord, documentation kit, setup CD-ROM; USB cable not included

Photo print speed based on maximum print speed using Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy. Print/copy speed will vary based on system configuration, software, document complexity, print mode and page coverage. (2) USB 2.0 Hi-Speed performance requires Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 with pre-installed USB 2.0 port. (3) Resolution may vary based on printer driver setting. Ink droplets can be placed with a horizontal pitch of 1/4800 inch at minimum. (4) Will vary based on composition of images/documents printed. (5) For a listing of select Canon digital cameras and DV camcorders featuring Bubble Jet Direct or PictBridge direct printing technology, visit www.usa.canon.com/consumer/directprint. PC WORLD.com Editors' review:
For sheer variety of paper options at a wallet-friendly price, the Canon BJC-5000 tops our list for home users. For $249 you get features galore, including the ability to print on tabloid-size (11-by-17-inch) paper. This wide format is handy for posters and other odd jobs, but hand-feeding pages one at a time through a slot at the back of the printer is a pain.
We like the 5000's even text, which looks similar to that of the small-business printers we tested. Colors are detailed, if a bit flat, and it produces gorgeous graphics on high-quality paper.
Unique to the Canon BJC-5000 is the ability to run dual black cartridges for nonstop text printing, or dual color cartridges for heavy-duty color jobs. Performance is about average for a home printer. We have just two minor complaints: The BJC-5000 makes a real racket while it's printing, and the manual's troubleshooting section is ridiculously brief.

Detailed Specs (BJC 8200):
Product Description for Canon BJC 8200 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
Equipped with built-in USB and parallel ports and both Mac and PC compatible, the BJC 8200 is an ideal companion to your desktop or laptop. You'll print crisp text and true colors on photo paper, transparencies, and much more with this sleekly designed, small, light printer.
Setup and installation are smooth and easy with the Canon Quick Start Guide. The ink cartridges are easy to install but require several more steps than usual because each tank is installed separately. However, the ink management system minimizes waste and saves you money; you replace only the color that runs out. We also like the reassurance of the low-ink sensor, which sends a message when the ink is low so you can refill before you start a new project.
Print speeds are approximately a minute for 4-by-6-inch prints and up to 3 minutes for an 8-by-10-inch print. The 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution in black and color produces vibrantly colored and detailed photo prints. The unit's auto feed speeds production, holding about 100 sheets of plain paper and 80 pages of high-resolution photographic paper. The BJC 8200 runs a little loud for our taste, but who could resist a remarkably fast, commanding little printer, enabling you to print high-quality photos in your home or office?Although the BJC-8200 has a highly intuitive interface, you may need to consult the manual to use some functions. We prefer having a hard copy of the user's reference at hand, but Canon's guide is online. The BJC-8200 printer includes a creative software applications CD-ROM featuring printer setup guide and Canon Photo. It prints on a wide range of paper types, including PhotoPaperPro, brilliant white, Bubble Jet, banner papers, envelopes, fabric sheets, greeting and glossy photo cards, glossy photo paper, high-gloss photo film, and high-resolutionand plain paper, transparencies, and magnetic sheets. We didn't try them all but if results remain consistent, the outcome is sure to impress even the master photographer.
Canon offers a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor with SelectExchange available.

PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
The BJC-8200 is for home or light-duty use. The BJC-8200 offers class-leading speeds.
The BJC-8200 has both parallel and USB ports, though you have to provide your own cables. Installation and setup were relatively painless except for head alignment. Using one of the few sheets of high-quality paper provided for this purpose, you have to print out a test sheet of different colored rectangles. Most printers use a pattern of slightly offset lines, and you pick the line that looks least broken. Here, the samples looked identical to the unaided eye; it took a magnifying glass to see the subtle differences.
Photos printed beautifully on the BJC-8200, and plain-paper output at the default settings produced no noticeable banding. The one flaw was that on plain paper, the black background on a line graph swallowed up some faint lines, but this is of little consequence: The printer is intended for photos, not graphs.
The BJC-8200 is too specialized for most home and small-office users, and the skinny, black ink tank is not well suited for general printing use.

Detailed Specs (Canon BJC 8500):
Product Description for Canon BJC 8500 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
The BJC-8500 is Canon's color Bubble Jet printer designed with the graphics industry in mind. Canon combined unique printing technologies with advanced features to offer a printer capable of outstanding quality whilst also well equipped for business use. The BJC-8500 can achieve a true resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi by using Canon's brand new MicroFine Droplet Technology. This reduces the size of each drop, producing superior image quality, with the result being print outs of even better quality than silver halide photographs. P-POP Technology ensures that this level of print quality can be achieved across a wide range of papers and a wide range of applications. The BJC-8500 offers superb handling capabilities facilitating such tasks as crop marks printing and layout for pre-press artwork, making it the ideal choice in printing for the graphics and design industry.
This printer model is not being manufactured by Canon any more
PC MAGAZINE.com Editors' review:
The BJC-8500 is a workhorse for graphic artists and designers who need large-format support. The BJC-8500 doesn't offer class-leading speeds. But what's missing in terms of speed the BJC-8500 makes up for in quality.
The 8500 comes with a 250-sheet paper tray, and you can add a second 250-sheet tray. A manual feed slot in the back gives you a straight paper path for heavy stock and labels. The BJC-8500 can handle paper up to 13 by 19 inches, allowing full bleeds on all sides of a ledger-size sheet.
With an overall speed of 0.5 ppm, the BJC-8500 is even slower than the BJC-8200, which has an overall speed of 1.0 ppm, but it has excellent quality. In four-color mode, there's a fifth tank for black and a sixth tank containing an ink optimizer that waterproofs plain paper to reduce wicking in paper fibers. The print driver is a bit limited compared with that of other printers, and the unit doesn't come with bundled software, but it gets the job done when you need large, high-quality photos.
The BJC-8500 is priced so that only professional users will be interested, but if you need to print on large media, you don't have many other choices in this price range.
