Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

Detailed Specs (Canon S400 Printer):
Product Description for Canon S400 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
With innovative features, solid performance, and a low price tag, the Canon S400 Color Bubble Jet printer is all you need for your home or office. Its patented Think Tank System efficiently manages ink use, reducing waste and saving you money. Rather than replacing an entire cartridge, the S400 allows you to change individual ink tanks. This system also gives you the option to switch to Canon's IS-32 Color Image Scanner cartridge, allowing the S400 printer to work as a 720 dpi color sheetfed scanner.
At six pages per minute (four ppm color) and 1,440 x 720 dpi, the S400 combines fast printing with crisp graphics and professional documents. It handles a wide variety of paper types and sizes, including glossy photo, transparencies, envelopes, and T-shirt transfers. Built-in USB and parallel ports make connecting quick and easy for both Mac and PC systems.
The Canon S400 includes a CD-ROM featuring American Greetings CreataCard SE software, printer drivers, and user's guide.
Street Price: $365.00 - $1.047
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
WHAT'S HOT: The S400's $79 price tag makes it the least expensive ink jet that PC World has reviewed in a long time. Despite the low cost, it is well designed and fairly versatile, with support for both standard ink and optional photo ink. The S400's ink prices are quite modest, at 2 cents for a page of black text and 11 cents for a page of color graphics. Also, each ink color comes in a separately replaceable tank, so if you deplete one color before the others you can replace just that one; on most other printers you have to replace all the color inks when one color runs dry.
WHAT'S NOT: The S400 prints graphics at a run-of-the-mill 0.6 pages per minute, but it prints text at only 2.3 ppm, about half the speed of many printers on the chart. Plus, its print quality on ordinary paper didn't impress us; text showed some shadowing or spattering and was somewhat rough on big letters, while graphics looked very dotty and didn't have much detail. (Note that on coated ink jet paper the S400's print quality takes a big jump in quality.) A minor detail: The output tray sort of leans against the printer instead of attaching snugly. That's fine until you move the printer, when the tray can easily slip off.
WHAT ELSE: You can remove the S400's print head and replace it with a gizmo that turns the printer into a scanner. The IS-32 scanner head captures 24-bit color at 720 dpi, similar to a low-end flatbed scanner. But it costs $69, which is only a bit less than an inexpensive scanner; considering the inconvenience of swapping heads and not being able to print while the scanner head is installed, it makes more sense just to buy a stand-alone scanner for your desk. We did not test the IS-32 scanner features. Canon really outdid itself on the S400's documentation: The excellent and detailed 500-page manual would probably outweigh the printer itself if Canon had decided to print it, but it is only available on the CD.
UPSHOT: The S400's low purchase price and relatively low ink costs might make it a good choice for casual users, though less-than-stellar print quality and slow speeds will probably discourage anybody who plans on doing more than occasional printing.

Detailed Specs (6000 BJC ):
Product Description for HP 7410 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
The Canon BJC-6000 is designed for both busy workplaces and home offices. It provides fast, affordable, professional-quality, high-resolution black and color printing. An intelligent ink system with individual tanks eliminates waste and saves money, and optional Canon Photo Inks and specialty paper create amazing near-photo-quality output.
To set up the Canon BJC-6000, we followed the instructions on the Quick Start guide. Because the BJC-6000 comes with several large tanks (one each for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow), and because the tanks and cartridges are separate, setup took longer than usual. The Canon
Creative Pro CD-ROM comes with several complementary applications, so software installation took a little longer as well.
In our test of the BJC-6000, we printed several color and black-and-white samples in each of the printer's four modes--draft, good, better, and best. Our samples included graphics, large and small letters, and a variety of fonts and color shades. Black text was razor sharp and approached the quality of a modest laser printer. There was only a tiny bit of ink bleeding, even on normal uncoated paper, and a multi-colored tight-register sample looked especially impressive.
We also scanned and printed a 32-bit color photograph. Even without the optional Canon Photo Inks and specialty paper, the hard copy was warm and detailed, capturing the texture of the original with surprising accuracy. We also appreciated the speed--up to five pages per minute (ppm) in color.
The Canon BJC-6000 is an impressive bubble-jet printer with a great software bundle; it would make an excellent addition to any small office.
Pros:
- Sharp, near-laser-quality black printing
- 1440 x 720 color printing
- Up to 8 ppm
- Great software bundle
Cons:
From Winmag:
Canon's BJC-6000 is the only printer in this group that uses a separate photo cartridge-a practice that seems to be on the decline. It's also the only one that uses separate ink tanks for each color. That makes setup a little tricky, since the color, photo and black ink cartridges have to be loaded with the appropriate ink tanks. The refill process is made somewhat easier by its optical low-ink sensor.
Printouts on photo paper were very good with both the photo cartridge and the regular color cartridge. The photo-cartridge output was markedly less grainy and had slightly better color variations, especially with reds.
Black text was admirably dark and smooth, about equal to the Stylus Color 900's output and not quite as sharp as that of the DeskJet 895Cse. However, its draft mode was much fuzzier than the other printers' low-resolution modes and not suitable for correspondence. Spot color was solid but muted in tone.
The BJC-6000 was a little slower than the Epson and the HP, but faster at printing text than the Lexmark The BJC-6000 and the Stylus Color 900 are both a tad larger than the other two models tested, which could be a consideration if space is tight.
This printer model is not being manufactured by Canon any more
PCWORLD.com Editors' review:
WHAT'S HOT: For a competitive $199, Canon's BJC-6000 provides the fastest performance of any ink jet in its price range. In fact, at 4.4 ppm on text, it's speedier than all but two other models here--the $399 Epson Stylus Color 900 and the $299 HP DeskJet 895Cse. Similarly, the BJC-6000's 1.1-ppm graphics speed puts it ahead of all but the Epson. Text quality is impressive, with a strong, solid black and clear letterforms, even on italic, bold, and small type. Similarly, the BJC-6000 did an impressive job on our color photographic output test. Printing on high-quality paper with the photo cartridges in place yielded lifelike, photo-realistic images and terrific colors.
WHAT'S NOT: Narrow parallel lines overlap, color graphics wash out and lack detail, and gray-scale images display a coarse dot texture. Even printing in high-resolution mode on ink jet paper doesn't help much. The software driver is packed with features, but poor design makes navigating them a challenge.
WHAT ELSE: The BJC-6000's design is unusually sturdy for an ink jet, with tough yet flexible paper trays. Unlike any other model in this review, the Canon has separately replaceable ink tanks, so you don't have to discard all the color ink when one tank runs out (a great design that other printers should emulate). This efficiency contributes to the BJC-6000's low total cost of ownership--it's far and away the most affordable in this roundup. An ethernet adapter is available for about $130.
BEST USE: Small-office users who need clean, quick text output and have limited graphics demands will like this printer.

Slightly larger than a three-hole paper punch, the bantamweight Canon BJC-55 bubble-jet color printer lets you print wherever you are. Powered by a lithium ion battery or an AC adapter, the printer connects to your PC via a USB or built-in Fast IrDA port.
Though it prints only one manually fed sheet at a time (an automatic sheet feeder is available for $59), the BJC-55 can produce 720-by-360-dpi printouts in a jiff, making it a convenient notebook accessory. It prints only 5.5 pages per minute with black ink, and about 2 per minute in color.
An optional $99 cartridge fits in the ink slot and transforms the printer into an instant scanner. The printer works with any Windows 98/2000/CE, Macintosh, or Palm machine, making it a perfect mobile printer for anyone on the go.
What's hot: Lightweight bubble jet prints anywhere on the fly.
What's not: One hand-fed sheet at a time.

CNET.com Editors' rating: 7.3 Good
User rating: 80% good, 20% bad
The good: Fine print quality; fast; adorable and portable; rechargeable battery pack included; allows direct printing from digital cameras.
The bad: Expensive; included ink ribbon prints only five photos; no LCD or media slots; no editing software; printing process takes a lot of physical space.
The bottom line: The CP-330 doesn't have any whiz-bang features, but its compact design and quality output make it a reasonable choice among portable photo printers.

Canon SELPHY CP-400 Printer Review
Photo Printer

SELPHY CP-400
Canon's new Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 makes printing brilliant, high quality photos from a digital camera quick and easy. Replacing Canon's popular CP-220 model, the new Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 allows consumers to make beautiful 4 x 6-inch postcards or photographs in approximately 81 seconds(a), which is four seconds faster than previous models.
Quick and Simple = Brilliant Long Lasting Photos
Producing crisp, vibrant photographs, The Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 runs on AC power and can be connected to a PictBridge-compliant digital camera or a compatible personal computer for quick, high-quality prints in seconds. Its small size (6.7 x 4.7 x 2.2 inches) and new streamlined design make this compact photo printer simple to tote along to parties and family gatherings. It can also print credit-card size photos, photo stickers, photo labels and 4 x 8-inch photo greeting cards(b). This new dye sublimation device creates water and fade resistant prints that last up to 100 years(c).
The Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 is PictBridge compliant. PictBridge is the worldwide direct printing standard that allows any PictBridge-compliant printer to print directly from any PictBridge compliant digital camera. Standard PictBridge features include the choice between borderless and bordered prints, optional date imprinting, print quantity selection, and trimming (cropping) of individual images. All of these features are controlled through a simple menu system on the camera's LCD monitor.
The Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 provides further PictBridge support with two added features; N-Up printing, which allows users to create more than one smaller version of the same image on a sheet (2,4,6,9, etc.); and Fixed Size Printing, which allows the end-user to pre-select a dimension for the print, even though it may be a different size from the paper it will be printed on. For example, consumers can print a 3 x 5-inch photo onto a 4 x 6-inch paper.
Personalized Postcards and Greeting Cards
The printer can create high-quality 300 dpi color photographs in three different paper sizes from a computer via USB or by direct camera-to-printer connection. These sizes include 4 x 8-inch personalized greeting cards or invitations; 4 x 6-inch postcard size or 2.5 x 3.5-inch credit card size pictures (The 4 x 8-inch paper cassette is an optional accessory). The 4 x 8-inch wide paper size allows consumers to create and print personalized greeting cards for nearly any occasion. The printer comes equipped with drivers and application software(d) that includes a wide variety of templates and clip art for users to personalize their greetings, holiday cards, birth announcements, party invitations, and many other projects.
Additionally, select Canon PowerShot digital cameras feature Direct Print options that can be used with the SELPHY CP-400 model, including an ID Photo Print function that automatically generates passport style prints on 4 x 6-inch paper as well as ID prints of various sizes (selectable on the camera-menu).
The printer also allows consumers to print thumbnail sequences from movie clips from select PowerShot digital cameras. Up to 63 thumbnails can be printed on 4 x 6-inch postcard-size paper. With the Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 and PowerShot digital cameras, users are ready to capture and print their memories anywhere, anytime.
The Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 supports the DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) Version 1.1 printing standard. This handy feature allows users to pre-select multiple images for automated batch printing.
Pricing and Availability
The Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP-400 will be available in January for an estimated street price of $149.99(e).
