Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. By most measures, the Canon Selphy DS700 Compact Photo Printer ($199.99 direct) is a typical ink jet-based dedicated photo printer, with the ability to print from PictBridge cameras, memory cards, and a PC. Its claim to fame is that instead of offering a built-in LCD, it can plug into a TV to let you preview your photos and work through the menus at large size. It even comes with a remote control, so you can give the commands from your easy chair.
More troublesome is that when you're not connected to a TV, your only choice for printing from memory cards is to print everything on the card. Ideally, we'd like to print an index sheet and then choose which photos to print.
As with most dedicated photo printers, maximum picture size is 4 by 6. Print speed is typical. We timed it at 1 minute 21 seconds to 1:39 for printing from a computer via USB, and roughly the same speeds for printing from a memory card or a Canon PowerShot S60 camera. Output quality is also typical, with a rating at the high end of very good.
Unfortunately, running costs are high. Canon claims 36 cents per print, based on 75 photos for the printer's single ink cartridge. In our tests, however, the cartridge lasted for only 38 prints, which would effectively double the cost per print. Consider the DS700 an acceptable choice, but we'd rather skip the TV connection and choose the Epson PictureMate, which has slower performance, but offers excellent quality, equally waterproof and smudge proof output, and a 29-cent cost per print.
