Important Printer Buying Tip: ALWAYS check for the ink cartridge prices before you purchase a printer. Why? Sometimes cheaper printers end up costing more because its ink cartridges may be way expensive. You should calculate the "cost of ownership" per month. The math is simple: (number of prints per month) times (cost of the cartridge) divided by (the yield of the cartridge). Yield is the number of pages that can be printed with one particular cartridge. For example, assume that average home user prints 150 black pages per month using a black cartridge that yields 200 pages and costs $28. The monthly "cost of ownership" is (150 pages) x ($28) = $21 200 pages Also look at the printer ink alternatives; besides the original manufacturer's cartridges (OEMs), you may have the selection of remanufactured cartridges, compatible ink cartridges, and ink refill kits. |

Detailed Specs (Canon PIXMA IP8500):
Product Description for Canon IP8500 (From the Manufacturer, Canon)
The Pixma iP8500 Photo Printer features the Canon eight-color ChromaPLUS ink system for richer, more true-to-life color reproduction that will satisfy even the most demanding photographer. Its addition of red and green ink tanks expands the color spectrum to a level achieved only by professional printers, and the difference is vividly clear.
Easy-PhotoPrint v3.0
While most photo-editing software applications will brighten the entire image, Easy-PhotoPrint 3.0 accurately detects the subject's face and adjusts the skin to the optimum tone. Brighten dark faces caused by bright backgrounds. Choose from one-click automatic to correct the entire image all at once, or manual to correct just a selected area.
Easy-PhotoPrint 3.0 also lets you select and print any image on your PC, perfectly trim images, correct images using lab-quality retouching features, correct red-eye, smooth facial lines and skin tone, sharpen faces, remove blemishes, and print in a variety of sizes and layouts.
Plus, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a high-performance print head with an amazing 6,144 nozzles, ejecting precise, consistent droplets as small as 2 picoliters. The result is richer images with improved brilliancy rivaling that of positive film. Your images will come to life as never before.
This feature-rich printer even lets you print without a computer: simply connect any PictBridge-compatible digital camera or DV camcorder, and print. You can also produce edge-to-edge true borderless photos in 4-by-6, 5-by-7, and 8.5-by-11-inch sizes, with the look and feel of traditional photographs. How fast?
Thanks to those 6,144 nozzles, a 4-by-6 borderless print takes approximately 23 seconds. Plus, the printer's USB Hi-Speed interface enables fast data transfer from your computer, reducing total print time.
Thanks to eight individual ink tanks, you can replace only the color that runs out, rather than an entire cartridge containing several colors of unused ink. Plus, a unique low-ink sensor alerts you when ink levels are low, so can just drop in a new tank as needed. Bottom line: more efficient printing with lower costs.

CNET.com Editors' review:
Meet the little brother of this spring's Canon i9900, a medium-format photo printer that earned high marks for speedy performance and impressive print quality. Part of the newly announced line of Pixma photo printers, the Canon iP8500 brings a couple of new features to the table and looks to live up to its big brother's good reputation.
Upside: Like the i9900, the Pixma iP8500 uses eight dye-based color primaries--cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, photo magenta, black, red, and green--dubbed the ChromaPlus ink system, so we expect the iP8500's output to look just as good. The inks are also unbelievably cheap; based on Canon's capacity ratings, we estimate that the ink cost of an 8x10 photo is only 14 cents. Further, the i9900 was fast, and we're counting on the iP8500 to come in with similarly speedy times. You'll also find all the new Pixma features, such as dual paper trays, autoduplexing (Canon plans to introduce dual-sided photo paper), and higher paper-input capacity (300 sheets).
Downside: The inks may be cheap, but Canon makes up the cost difference in paper. A pack of 15 8.5x11 sheets of Canon's best-quality photo paper, Photo Paper Pro, costs $13.95. Photographers concerned about print longevity may shy away from Canon's dye-based inks since pigment-based ones have generally proven more fade-resistant.
Outlook: Given that this printer inherited the i9900's ink set and printhead technology, we expect the Canon Pixma iP8500 ($349.99) to do well in both performance and print-quality tests. We'll study its prints once it ships this fall.
